I would love to invite George BRODIE (my 3rd G-grandfather) who was christened 5 Oct 1759 in Forres.and died 21 Mar 1832 (buried in Elgin Cathedral). He married Margaret ANDERSON 26 Jul 1791 in Drainie. He has proved quite elusive. His children William and Margaret were born in Elgin. William's (1792) christening witnesses were William BRODIE, William MUIR, William BROWN, and Margaret BRODIE. Margaret's (1797) christening witnesses were: Thomas CHRISTIE, George WATSON, Margaret MURDOCH, and Margaret BROWN. I would ask him who his parents were and who these people were who witnessed the christenings and what relationship did they have to George and Margaret. I hope that 2008 allows you to tear down many brick walls. Chris Brodie Burk Albuquerque, NM
Quite a story - a bittersweet ending to the life of a happy couple. 12 kids, too. Thanks for sharing. Cam Sherry Williamson <[email protected]> wrote: I would invite Alexandrina Calder and her husband, Hugh Clark as her early life in Scotland remains a mystery. Her eldest sister, Isabella Calder, had married James Forsyth of Duffus prior to their father's immigration (their first child Janet was baptized in 1831 Nairn, Nairn). They are next found listed in the 1841 for Hopeman, Duffus. Alexandrina is not listed with this family in the 1841 (would have been abt. 13 years old). This family immigrated to Canada (Oneida, Haldimand, Ontario) via the Birbice out of Aberdeen in 1849. Her second eldest sister, Janet Calder, also remained behind. She was baptized in 1810 Nairn, Nairn and married Duncan McDonald (much her senior) in 1840 Nairn. Alexandrina is not listed with this family in the 1841. The McDonald's joined the other members of the family in Oneida about 1851. Alexandrina and Hugh crossed the pond abt. 1850 also settling in Oneida. She and Hugh had 12 children, the first two being born in Scotland. Hugh lists that he was born Sep 1815 in Scotland in the 1901 Canadian Census. Alexandrina Calder died in 1873 Oneida. According to one of the descendents, Alexandrina had a beautiful singing voice and could be found on many occasions sitting on a log outside her home singing. She died when the carriage she was driving overturned and crushed her. According to this gentlemen, Hugh was so distraught that he insisted her gravestone be made to look like a log (and it is). Hugh died in 1904 and is buried with her. I would ask Alexandrina in whose charge she was left when her father immigrated. What was her early life like? Where did she meet Hugh Clark, in what parish in Scotland were her children born? I would ask Hugh where in Scotland he was born and to whom (they named their first son James Calder Clark)? I was so hoping that when the 1841 was released, I would find her with MacIntosh relatives as we have no clue as to her mother's ancestry. She is nowhere to be found! Hi all who long for Christmas dinner. You can all come and we can share our brick walls. However I would like to ask Mary Main or Findlay to my Christmas dinner to ask her who exactly was the John Main that she married in Auldearn on December 9, 1825. And what had become of him by the time the 1841 Census was taken when she and the children lived in Edinburgh and she worked as a Sick Nurse but there was no trace of John. That's my brick wall and it would be nice to be able to knock it down. In fact that would make a very nice Christmas present. Happy Christmas to all on the list and your families too. I love this idea, too. I would welcome all the departed Cattells and Mustards and Munros and Reids who were so kind when I took my 10 year old grandaughter to Inverness and 'Drainie' and surroundings the summer of 2006. Our visit was charmed. We had rainbows every day and she found literally 'gold in the streets.' Although we never spoke knowingly with direct relatives, the seas actually parted for her. She loved the seashore and we went to Dallas (She lives in Dallas, Texas!) and the connections were palpable. How nice to sit and visit and let them get to know this wonderfully charming descendent! When my grandfather, Randolph Cattell, showed me dried heather and spoke of the highlands, I hope I wound get to see it all someday, but the visit and welcome was unbleivable. Sorry, have you been waiting for me to ask for Christmas Dinner Guests. This year the festive time seems to have come up so quickly, that it is now the big day within a matter of hours and my tree is not up yet !! I have just organised my guest list and this is how it goes :- I seem to always ask my grandad, John Riach and my grandma (who I never knew) Gladys Brayshaw Grace Rhind Duncan (phew). This year also I would invite my two uncles and aunt and my mum, mainly to recall what their childhood was like and what they did at Christmas. I would ask grandad about the tinker who wrote a poem about him when he was a child and if the stories in the lines were true. Alexander Fridge (Frigg) Riach would also be asked to partake in the day and I would ask him what was the reason for his journey to America. Now, Boxing Day, the Hay family and the Younie family would be welcome. All the relations of Ann Hay. I would ask what was their life like and so many other questions that I would have to prepare a list. For the Younie side, George Younie = Helen Riach, their children - what did they do as children? What were their jobs and why did they go in that direction ? What did you all eat at Christmas ? Was it a special day ? How long a holiday did you have and how much time from school ? So many questions, so many family members. I think I'll get the caterers in !!! Let me and the list know who you would invite this year. The same people as last year, that dosn't matter as there will be more questions that have arisen over the past 12 months. May I now close by wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year filled with lots of family history questions solved. Best wishes to you and yours Carol List Admin
Hi Love reading about the brick walls and who gets invited to dinner to provide a bit of information and meat on the family. My dinner guest would be my great grandfather John Christie born in Elgin in 1862 the son of William Christie and Mary Gellie. John is a bit of a diffcult man to trace - he vanishes from the face of the earth in 1888 after marrying Isabella Morton Adamson in Sydney - she died about two months after the marriage and approximately one month after giving birth to my grandfather William Christie - I suspect this was considered pretty scandolous at the time. Letters kept by my dad show that John's brother, William - who went to New York in 1881 (marrying Fannie Skeltonizeth in 1887) and his sister Mary Ann - who married James Adamson of Aberdeen show they kept in touch with John who sailed on the Kosiouscko and the Alexander Duthie at different times. Reference is made in the letters to George Gellie Christie (John's brother) who married Susan Rust of Aberdeen and to his younger sister Olivia who married Jabez Trippett and went to live in Yorkshire about 1920 (these bits have been gleaned from Scotland's People). It would be lovely to know what John did after discovering his young bride had passed away - after his ship had sailed from Sydney. Family 'gossip' says he never saw his son again as he was raised by Isabella's mother in Manly, NSW. John wrote such detailed letters about his adventures on the ships and it would be so nice to crack the brick wall to see just where he went after leaving. Merry Christmas to all. OK - I'll break down: I would ask GGGGgrandpa John McBain (Croy Parish, Nairnshire, 1775-6 or so) and potential GGGGUncle William McBain (Croy Parish, Nairnshire, 1778) to the Christmas table and ask the following: 1) John, was your son Allan mistaken when he stated on your death certificate that your own dad was also a John Mcbain and also a Chelsea Pensioner? 'cause you have no birth/baptism record that I can find to confirm or deny Allan's claim. 2) If Allan was not mistaken, which of the four John McBain Chelsea Pensioners that fit the biil as your dad (I have their records of service from Kew right in front of me) is the right dad? 3) If Allan was wrong, then was your dad Angus McBean, husband of Jean Cameron, to whom you may have been born in Croy and Dalcross in March, 1776? 2) William, are you the right William I am looking for whose mysterious son John McBain of Arbroath (b. 1925 or so) ended up in Dundee co-habitating with his cousin Grace McBain, daughter of my GGGGgrandpa John McBain, for over thirty years 'til they finally admitted they were not married (after lying on the 61, 71, 81 and 91 censuses) and got married in 1893? 3) If you are the right William, are you the brother of my GGGGgrandpa John McBain (and thus also the son of either a John McBain, Chelsea Pensioner, or of Angus McBean and Jean Cameron of Nairnshire)? 4) If so, what happened to your daughter Elizabeth, b. 1830, and when did you die? And why can I not find you on the muster rolls for the 75th Foot when your son John of Arbroath wrote that you served in it on his marriage certificate? well, I'm going to break these walls at some point, and finally connect William to John in some way and then with their parents... Goodnight! What a story. Thanks for sharing Cam Anne Burgess <[email protected]> wrote: > Where is Christmas dinner? I look forward to this topic every > year. You > must all be dining elsewhere or have solved all of your family > mysteries :-) No contest this year. It has to be my distant relative Joseph Duncan. He was born in 1821 in Birnie, and left the area when he grew up, losing touch with his family in the process. His siblings scattered; sister Elspet to found a dynasty in New Zealand, brother James to North America, and brother William to London, though three sisters married and remained in Moray, and brother Robert went to Ross-shire before retunring to Moray. William developed the habit of sending the London papers to his sisters, and in 1891 one sister was reading the big scandal of the time, when something struck her. The name of the man involved was Leslie Fraser Duncan. "My mother's maiden name was Fraser, and my grandmother's was Leslie", she mused. "I wonder??" So she wrote to William, and on reading her letter he leapt on to his horse, rode round to the man's fashionable London house and knocked on the door. A manservant answered. "Is your master at home?", enquired William. "No, sir". "Can you tell me where he is from?" "Yes, sir. He was born in a place called Birnie in the north of Scotland", replied the manservant. Lo and behold, this was indeed long-lost brother Joseph! He had made his way to London and for forty years had been the proprietor and editor of the 'Matrimonial News', a sort of Victorian dating agency for the upper crust, and had hit the headlines because he was successfully sued for breach of promise of marriage, at the age of 70, by a 21-year-old girl! The tale of the case, as recounted in the 'Times', rivals any modern soap opera, and involves much intrigue and dubious behaviour, bankruptcy, concealment of assets, hiding abroad, safe deposit boxes, people with assumed names, absent vicars, cheap hotel rooms and much else besides. Joseph, or Leslie Fraser, married four times, his last wife being the daughter of a lord. He married her in the middle of the court case, and by the time the girl was awarded £10,000 damages he had given all his assets to his wife, handed his business over to a stepson (his third wife's son), and was bankrupted. There was also some intriguingly dubious information about the girl and her family. He had no children by any of his wives, but the 'Times' hints at several illegitimate children. Ten years after this furore had died down, a Leslie Fraser Duncan was cited as co-respondent in a divorce case. As there is no other person of this name in any records up to that date, I have to conclude it is the same one. At the tender age of 80. So I would like to have Christmas dinner with Joseph Leslie Fraser Duncan, and to get him to tell me all about his life, no holds barred, which I am sure would be more than fascinating.
