    2. Fisher (Holiday Enterprise) Ltd
    3. Bill, The Davidsons were one of the principal families which lived in Nairnshire for generations, from at least the early 17th century through to the present day. In particular they had a strong presence in Ardclach and Cawdor parishes. My own 4 times great grandmother was Anne Davidson born 21st May 1786 in Ardclach. She married Alexander Fraser on 18th June 1806 in Ardclach as well. If he isn't actually living with his mother, there is a good chance that he will be with his grandparents. You can view images of the 1861 census for a modest fee at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. The index lists 21 Alexander Shaws aged 2 to 4. The nearest one to Forres is a 3-year-old at Croy and Dalcross. Happy hunting! Anne

    3. Hi David Looked at the family and found I had no Margaret. As I picked up some information from the headstone in Rothes on a visit some years ago. I also found in various cemeteries other members of the Riach and connected families Anyway, have just been on ancestry and looked at the Scottish census a thing I have been doing in stages for all the families. I've found Margaret with the family in the census and also found Annie her sister living with her aunt Margaret Younie b 1849 Rothes living at 13 High St, Rothes. I too have been able to find nothing else about Margaret - could it be that she may have gone to join family in NZ or Australia ? Worse things have happened when people have disappeared Will keep looking though, Carol DAVID FELL wrote: > Hi Carol > > I think we have been in touch before. > > You wrote: > For the Younie side, George Younie = Helen Riach, their children - > what did they > do as children? 3. There was nothing especially posh about CDVs.... They became relatively cheap and people at all levels of society paid for them and exchanged them. They were not "visiting cards" associated with silver salvers, butlers and society matrons calling on each other. They took their name from such visiting cards only because they were the same size. Society matrons probably would have thought it infra dig to leave a calling card with your likeness upon it! There is an excellent book, "The Mechanical Eye in Australia" which will give you a lot more background about photography in Australia, but I cannot think - off the top of my head - of a similar reference for Scotland. However, I cannot imagine someone has not done some kind of catalogue or reference to photographic studios of the 19th Century - the Scots took to photography like ducks to water. Bob Hay. Of course I'd read of visiting cards, silver platters, butlers etc. but hadn't realized that some cartes de visite came with photographs - was this the norm? I'd thought of my gggrandfather as a simple crofter (with 4 acres beside the old Spey Bridge at Grantown) who had worked as a grieve on farms on the Castle Grant estate. Not of the social strata to have visiting cards produced. But perhaps it was wealthy son Peter who decided that Dad should be upgraded! Canberra's photographic expo sounds fascinating, the place to be in 2008, particularly for a (pre-digital) mad keen photographer... Happy New Year, Helen

I don't understand this, because when I looked in the SP index for banns for Charlotte McKinzie without a spouse name, it came up with this marriage to Jas Donald on 12/07/1806 in Aberdeen City. 3. Cartes de visite, CDVs, are a family historian's best friends because not only do they show you what dead relatives looked like, usually in their Sunday best, but they also are of great help identifying time periods. They were invented in the 1854 by André Disderi but became fashionable by 1860 and by 1863, so fashionable that the American, Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, was able to write "Card portraits, as everybody knows, have become the social currency, the 'green-backs' of civilization." It is not only clothing which shows when the CDV was taken, but also the thickness of the card on which they are printed, whether or not they have coloured borders, the size of the image relative to the size of the card, whether they had rounded corners, and - for a time in the US, whether or not they carried a duty stamp. etc etc. By about 1880 they were largely superseded by Cabinet photos (larger) and by 1900 or so, the post card. Helen, there is a huge Festival of Photography scheduled here in Canberra from July to October, 2008. It is coordinated I believe by the National Gallery but just about every institution here in the National Capital with an interest in photography is taking part. You can see a draft program at http://www.nla.gov.au/pict/NationalPhotographyFestival-DraftProgram.html, but if you would like just a potted history of the CDV, I can send you a copy of the pertinent lecture I am giving as part of a 9 week course here in Canberra for the University of the Third Age. My lectures are usually on my web site but since this course does not start until March 2008 I have not yet uploaded the texts - in case students read them there and don't attend in person :-) If you prefer to wait, the full course will be there at www.bobhay.net from about mid-April on.
