I think this site now has three or four books relating Nairn / Moray. This is a good site if some of your Scots wandered into Canada............. http://www.ourroots.ca/e/ My Nairn natives settled in Dumfries, Waterloo (Halton) Ontario in 1832 and my Ayr folks into Oneida, Haldimand, Ontario in 1842. This site had early texts relating to both these locations. It was neat to get an insight into some of what my early family dealt with.........free of charge!
Ian...got any Innes family folks there? Hi Bob, Those are very very interesting URLs. I'm on dial-up so before downloading massive heaps, do you know if there is anything about the place name Wester Geddes in the book of Cawdor papers? I was able to access Nairn Library's copy of Bain last year in the course of my research into the origins of the GEDDES surname, in particular the Lands Of Geddes. Bain mentions that a Wester Geddes that appears in various documents, but I haven't been able to find a single other reference anywhere - despite Meikle Geddes and Easter Geddes still existing today. After a deal of research on the ROSEs, BISSETs, de BOSCO and RAITs, as well as CALDERs, I believe that there is good reason to conclude that Cawdor Castle was built on Wester Geddes when the family moved out of Nairn (and hence the name disappeared). Having talked to the trustees at Cawdor, I was intending to study the family papers now at the NAS but we're talking about 13th/14th Century material and I was not confident of being able to interpret the writing. It would be great to hear if there any references in the book. Howard Geddes
Hi Tom Another thought has occurred to me. I suggest that you look at the Moray Local Heritage site at _http://www.moray.org/LocalHeritage/_ (http://www.moray.org/LocalHeritage/) and use people search. This will list a large number of Jamiesons with various spellings but you can limit the search by restricting the birth/marriage/death place to Bellie. One word of caution is that anything you find should be checked back to its original source as it is a database built up and not an original record. Nevertheless it is a valuable resource and is free to use. Ian A C Scott
Thank your this... I did many searches on Google without finding this URL. So then I decided to buy the book even though it was expensive. Had I known this was already on line it would have saved me hours of work and quite a few dollars! BTW, there might be several copies of my reply - the gmail server seems to be having problems..... Hullo fellow listers. As a new member of this list I should like to post my main interests in the Moray area...Jamiesons in Bellie parish and associated families of Thomsons, Smiths and Taylors. Nearly all the men seem to have been salmon fishers and they all lived in Bogmoor. If anyone else is active in these areas I'd be very glad to make contact. Tom C. Re my enquiry about Anna Bella McPherson. It might have been helpful if I had pointed out that she had a brother John born Edinkillie near Elgin about 1842. This brother became Baillie John McPherson and owned the former Cockburn Hotel in Edinburgh. (The building still stands). Anyone in the family or who knows of John will be aware of the issues that arose after John's death about the ownership of the hotel. Recognise this anyone? Ian Macwhirter
On several occasions I have seen George Bain's "A History of Nairnshire" referred to on this List. Published first in 1823 (and again in 1923), it is now a rare and rather expensive book. Since there is only one copy in libraries in Australia (in the State Library of Western Australia) and I did not fancy my antique eyes would stand up to reading 600 pages in 10 days, the period allowed under the inter-library loan, I bought a copy and have enjoyed reading my way from the Paleolithic, through Medieval and Jacobite times up to the late Victorian events of the author's own period. It is a good read.... As part of my use of this rather tattered copy (it is sorely in need of re-binding, but what else could I afford?) I have been digitizing sections. One chapter in particular - Chapter IX, "Early Family History" - will be of interest to anyone researching families in Nairnshire. Of course it does not deal by name with ordinary people like my ancestor but rather traces the history of the great families of the region who were, for the most part, Anglo-Norman knights and some of the old Celtic families who retained possession of land during and after the Middle Ages. My own research focusses on the Norman family known as the Lairds of Lochloy and Park, apparently the progenitors of the surname "Hay" in Nairnshire. However, others with an interest in such surnames as - *inter alia* - Brodie, Grant, Ogilvie, Rose, Ross, Mackintosh, to name just a few, will find snippets and sometimes quite extensive details of the histories of these names in Mr. Bain's book. Being fairly sure that "A History of Nairnshire" is now no longer covered by copyright, I have posted Chapter IX in its entirety on my web-site - http://www.bobhay.net - so that others can enjoy it. But be warned: although I have proof-read the text and am fairly confident I have corrected as many errors as possible, I cannot guarantee it is a perfect rendition of the original. I am currently trying to assemble the mentions found in Bain to the Hays of Lochloy, to Inshoch and other items of related interest. When I get that together I will post it too because there seems to be no systematic history of this Norman family and its 400 years in Nairnshire. Google has digitized several other rare books pertinent to the history of Nairnshire. These include: (1) *The Book of the Thanes of Cawdor*: http://books.google.com.au/books?id=nwEhAAAAMAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=Thanes+of+Cawdor&ei=iICKR9yFNZu4sgPhjLTQBQ A compilation from the original documents held by the Cawdor family. (3) Rev. Lachlan Shaw: *A History of the Province of Moray*, 1827, http://books.google.com.au/books?id=MfMHAAAAQAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=History+of+the+Province+of+Moray&ei=ZIKKR7KQIIKwsgPZz6nQBQ#PPP7,M1 (4) Hugh Rose: "A Genealogical Deduction of the Family of Rose of Kilravock" - this was written in 1683 and updated by Lachlan Shaw in 1753, published 1848: http://books.google.com.au/books?id=rb9GCo3_bqYC&printsec=frontcover&dq=Rose+of+Kilravock&ei=aIOKR5LWIYOssgPY-MHQBQ#PPP11,M1 All of these can be downloaded in Adobe Acrobat .pdf format and are searchable on-line. To download my digitized version of Bain, Chapter IX, go to my web site http://www.bobhay.net. The chapter is the third item from the top of the Home page under the heading *Extract from Bain, G: A History of Nairnshire, Nairn Telegraph, 1893. * ** *Please let me know about any errors which need correcting....* Bob. -- Bob Hay at home at www.bobhay.net H3EQG - R1b1c10
Hi Tom The Bellie OPRs have around 60 Births/Christenings listed from about 1709 up to 1855 and around 20 Marriages/Banns from about 1723 up to 1855. These can all be searched on the IGI but if you have specific items you wish confirmed I have the OPR film for Bellie covering the full period and will check for you. Ian A C Scott
I missed Christmas Dinner, and New Years. The Clavie made its way through Burghead this past weekend. I would have liked to have been there, and like happened to Ann Lambert Stewart this past Fall, find Jackie Roland Miller visiting at the same time. Maybe Margaret Buchanan would be there as well. And a newly-discovered Sinclair cousin, Alex Wood. Ken Doig is also connected through the Sinclairs. Ray Hennessey would join us, and probably correct me for starting a sentence with the word 'And'. Next August, I hope, I'll be there. Even if just for a day. Get the sea-scent in my soul. I may be at the World's, using kilt-making skills taught me by Ann Stewart, to help keep a couple of the competing Grade 1 bands looking top-shelf. Peigi

Is anyone else researching McPhersons as represented by Anna Bella McPherson b. July 1835 in Edinkillie, Elgin? Father was a Donald Mcpherson married I think to a Margaret Barnet. The family were said to be land reclaimers, whatever that was. I understand that it was a couple of generations after Donald McP that a John Stuart McP was born, later clansman of theyear in 1960. I welcome any information about this family - esp the girl Anna Bella McP. Thanks Ian Macwhirter

Jim ... Although I didn't find any passenger lists ... I have found a few interesting sites. They all refer to a Robert England and Lot 31. Here is a Robert England's marriage, death and children information on a Sweezey family site ... THE FIRST TWO SWEEZEY GENERATIONS IN MIRAMICHI http://www.genealogy.com/users/b/a/r/Karly-A-Barber/FILE/0016page.html Nov. 10 1791 Robert England of Scotland and Marjory Brown are married by Justice James Fraser in the Court of Quarter Sessions. They live on lot 31, Chatham, at what is today a park known as “England’s Hollow”. 1795 Robert England is appointed an overseer of the fishery for both sides of the river from Beaubears Island to Terril’s Point. 1796 Robert England and Marjory England have a daughter, Annie. 18 Aug. 1813 Reuben (Sweezey) buys lot 27 at Chatham on the south side of the Miramichi River, which is opposite the present-day entrance to Middle Island. Robert England, at lot 31, Chatham, is his close neighbour and witnesses the sale. This is probably when Reuben meets his future wife Annie England, daughter of Robert. 1835 Robert England dies and his sons Robert and his wife Fanny, cooper, Alexander, farmer and his wife Ann, Ruben Sweezey and his wife, farmers, George England, carpenter and James England blacksmith and Marjery England, Robert’s widow, sell Robert England’s various lands to his other son John, for five shillings each (..!?) According to his will, Robert England lived on lot 31 at Chatham until his death and at the time of his death Ruben Sweezey was living at Nappan Bay, where the Sweezey descendants still live. Both Annie Sweezey nee England and her mother Marjory Sweezey nee Brown, the widow, sign with their mark, not their names. 30 July 1836 Robert James born to Reuben and Annie (England). They are reported as living in Glenelg parish and are farmers. _______________________________________________________________________ You may be aware of the following information posted on the Internet referring to a survey ... http://www3.bc.sympatico.ca/charlotte_taylor/Folder1/Miramichi%20River%20Lot s.htm Miramichi River Lots Daniel Micheau Survey 1785 Open the small picture at the top left of the page .. It's a copy of the original drawing. Robert England is Lot No. 31 http://www3.bc.sympatico.ca/charlotte_taylor/Folder1/Pre_Loyalists_on_the_Mi ramichi.htm This article states ... No. 31 A House Building by Robert England, lately from Europe The original ( Survey Map of 1785 by Daniel Micheau of the Miramichi River below Beaubear's Island, down to the Bay ) is preserved in the Crown Land Office at Fredericton … it was made in April, 1785, by a skilled surveyor, Daniel Micheau, and contains, in addition to the usual surveyor's return, a series of very valuable notes written around the margin, … The settlements of the lower Miramichi were then forming and the information about the derivation of the settlers is most welcome. It will be noticed that while some of them were Loyalists, many were 'old settlers', who are known to have come from Scotland or England. ------------------------------- Your Robert England Lot 31 is also mentioned in the Royal Gazette .. I used 'edit' 'find' 'england' ... these notes are near the end of the article http://www.gnb.ca/0062/gazette/RG20051221.pdf " Then northerly following said sideline until it intersects the southern boundary of Lot 31, originally granted to Robert England. Then starting easterly and following the eastern boundary of said lot to the Miramichi River, New Brunswick Grant Reference Plan No. 61;" I hope the above information is of some help to you .... Ross -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Jim Dixon Sent: Thursday, January 10, 2008 12:12 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [MORAY] Ships Passenger Lists I have an ancestor that left Scotland and settled in what is now, Miramichi, Northumberland County, New Brunswick. His name was Robert ENGLAND. I am trying to determine where in Scotland he came from and when he came across the pond. To complicate things, New Brunswick separated from Nova Scotia. The date of separation was January 1784. The earliest record that I found on my Robert ENGLAND in the NB archives is in a land grant application dated March 1784. ( He did receive the grant). In the grant application it states that Robert England had built a house on the property. This tells me that he arrived in the area in or before 1783. Are there any records in the NS archives, I do not know? I am unable to make the 4 1/2 hour trip due to health problems. My research to find Robert England in Scotland points to a possible match of one "Robert England", b 6 Nov, 1756, Rothes, County of Moray, Scotland, s/o Robert England and Agnes Garioch. The time frame is right. Also I have not found a marriage for this Robert, nor have I been able to trace him. My question is: Is there a website that lists the ships that left Scotland for (then Nova Scotia) Canada between about 1780 and 1783? Did any of these ships carry passengers and if so, are there passenger lists? Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sheila. I don't recognise the names (of yours) that you gave me, but I won't dismiss the possibility of a common family. Last night I joined (on-line) the Aberdeen & N. Scotland FHS and will have the opportunity there to put in a members enquiry and perhaps make use of their search services, Regards Ian
