This hotel is in Brighton, East Sussex, not Hampshire. I don't recognise any of the ID 11 photos. However, I clicked onto Margaret MURISON, Family ID 316. Her surname is, in fact, MORISON and this is why. Her parents were Andrew MURISON (1730-1809) and Mary HERDMAN (1740-1824). Andrew decided, for reasons best known to himself, to register all five of their children as MORISON (I have the reference). The most famous of the five children became Sir Alexander MORISON (1779-1866), who was knighted for his services in the cause of the treatment of the mentally challenged. Margaret MORISON (1770-1840) married William Gordon McCRAE (1768-1829), son of Alexander Gordon McCRAE (1745-1796) and Mary HARVIE ( ? -1770). William's sister Mary was born in 1770, which suggests Mary may have died in childbirth. Alexander then married Agnes HARVIE (sister to Mary?). If you would like further references and information, please contact me directly at chris.duff3@sympatico.ca. 1. [MORAY] Moray Scots to Jamaica
    2. Helen
    3. Greetings from Melbourne. Did anyone else on the Moray list have an ancestor-relative who went to Jamaica to grow sugar cane or any other farming venture? My ancestor William MACKIE and his wife Elspet ROY went to Jamaica about 1800 and their 4 children were born there. They returned to Forres in 1818. I wonder if William Mackie was part of an organised company, or if he decided to go there on his own initiative. Any information about such a venture from Scotland to Jamaica would be interesting. 3. Hi Goldie Re slaves with Scottish surnames. Many Black British who have come to Britain from the West Indies, have Scottish surnames. It is a result of, I am ashamed to say, the many Scottish slave owners on the sugar plantations. Many black West Indians were descended from the children of slave owners who were 'over friendly' with their female slaves. And I think that it was not uncommon for slaves to take on the surname of their owners. 3. This is true, what you say. Casts a sorry eye on the owner, doesn't it? But we would be remiss if we didn't think about this. I told you about the Innes fellow from Elgin.....and now have spent 3 hours or so going thru the books to find out how I knew that. I spend hours reading and absorbing info on the Innes clan, then don't go back to them for a few months, and go brain dead. When I find the story I'll email and tell you who it was. I seem to recall his sons were also involved in Jamacia as well. 3. In the Book 'The House of Innes' put out by the Innes Clan Society there is a story of an Innes family who bought a plantation in Jamaica. The family was into shipping as well. The long and short of it is that Mr. Innes wanted to free the slaves that came with the plantation. The neighbors objected saying their slaves would then want their freedom. In the end Mr. Innes won out.......and ironically, I can tell a story about a colored man with the last name of Innes who happened into a store in the western US. My step-brother was helping him select a pair of shoes, when the colored man noticed the name label on my step-brothers jacket; also Innes. Years later when I started doing genealogy, my step-brother asked me how this could be since I had told him the Innes family was from Scotland via Flanders........I have since wondered if the answer was that the colored man was one of the ancestors of the slaves on the plantation in Jamaica. I have done much reading and it seems to be a common thing to do when they were freed. They had first names, but no last names and they sometimes took the name of the plantation or the owner, out of respect. How else to explain it? I mean no disrespect to anyone here, but that's the story. Would be interesting to be able to find the fellow and see if I could back track his ancestry; I'm sure the story would be very interesting. 3. My "comprehensive" reply is due to the fact that every once in awhile, I like to get my research interests into the list archives (but also like to be clear that my findings are not Gospel)......not very many folks looking for Calder's so when a query is posted....I become a tad greedy :) I have never given up hope that someday I will find a link to my fourth great's immediate family (James Calder born 1785 Nairnshire); conversely, I am not very aggressive with regard to posting my interests to the lists unless someone inquires (at that point would like to post the entire family tree!!) With regard to Rathven, my earlier post pertained to a Calder descendent who married a Pirie and eventually settled in the Rathven area... James Calder / Katharine MacCurrach had a son John Calder in 1763/1765 Nairn, Nairnshire. John Calder married Margaret Bain in 1785 Nairn, Nairnshire. They in turn had a daughter Alexandrina in 1796 Nairn, Nairnshire. Alexandrina Calder married James Rose in 1826 Nairn, Nairnshire and they in turn had a daughter Helen born 1829 Forres, Morayshire. Helen Calder married Alexander Pirie in 1851 Auldearn, Nairnshire and it is this family who ended up in the Rathven area. More than you wanted to know but certainly glad you replied..........for the list archives :) Sherry
