    1. [MORAY] Croft of DOULSBURN

    3. Can any Lister help me out pinpointing the croft of DOULSBURN, parish of Speymouth? I'm doing some Innes research in the area and cannot find it on the Land Ranger map #28. I do know Speymouth parish was made up from the parishes of Essil and Dipple, so I think it must be the same general area, but cannot find it. I also know not all crofts are on the map, but I'm taking a chance that someone who lives in the NE of Scotland is on line. The info I have is that the family lived there, banns were: 'Robert Innes in Speymouth and Margaret Phimister were matrimonially contracted Dec 22nd and married at Urquhart Jany 3rd 1793." This family is still there in 1841 on the census, given as 'Doulsburn, Speymouth Parish.' Thanks for any help offered. Goldie

Could the entry actually say "Rothes"? The reason I ask is that, until the great boundary realignment of 1891, the county boundary between Banffshire and Moray (or Elginshire) did not coincide with the boundary between the parishes of Boharm and Rothes. There was a narrow strip of territory on the east bank of the river Spey which, until 1891, belonged to Boharm, but lay in Elginshire. The situation was rectified by transferring this area, in 1891, to the parish of Rothes, but it may well be that, before this official transfer of territory, the area was locally considered to belong to Rothes. The "List of Placenames" which accompanied the 1st Edition of the Ordnance Survey large-scale maps in the 1860s and 1870s lists "Rothes" as a placename in Boharm, but as there is, on the relevant sheet, no single place thus named, I rather think this means that the label applied to the whole of this small area, which comprised the estate of Aikenway, including Brockholes and Sheriffhaugh. 3. Hi, I have recently obtained the birth an death registration details of Janet Scott who was born in Boharm on 20th December 1825 and died in Rathven on June 19th 1892. The birth registration states William Scott, Rushes had a child in fornication with Margt. Milne. I have been unable to find Rushes on Libindex or various web sites and maps. Does anyone know of a way of finding were Rushes might be? In the 1841 census there is a William Scott at Mossend and I am hoping that this is Janet's father but I can not find any evidence to link them besides the fact that one of the witnesses at the baptism was Janet Gordon of Malcolmburn. Malcolmburn and Mossend are very close. regards Graham

    2. Dear Antonio It is entirely possible that you are descended from someone with the name Alves and/or who came from Alves. Not to say that you are,  but it is possible. Just take a look at all the places the Scots got to in the world and named either after themsleves or their town ! Maybe your ancestor was involved in a trade which brought him to Portugal as often happened (e.g wine merchant , sailor) . I looked at Libindx the Moray Council genealogical website and there are 12 people from Moray who died in Portugal - none with the surname Alves. And there are 105 people with the surname Alves , none of whom died in Portugal. I would have a google and see what you find. Good luck with your search. I have looked at the first page of the index of results and most of those were born in Moray, some in Alves itself. Of course this doesn't prove that you are lucky enough to have Scottish ancestors but at least you know that it is a Scottish surname! Between 1855 and 2006, 396 births were recorded with this surname. So it is a fairly uncommon surname but does exist. And there are a number of prominent Scottish families in the port making business in Portugal, aren't there eg the Cockburns. 3. Hello, Just a small point, you may be better going to the Heritage Centre in Elgin rather than the Library. It is situated in an annexe of the old East End School in Institution Road. If you put 'Institution Road, Elgin' into Multimap you will see it is quite close to the present library. The road end is blocked at the A96 end and you can only access it from the other end of Institution Road or down Queen Street. It is at this end that the Heritage Centre is located. The "breaking up" was merely an attempt to emphasise the fact that the "al" is pronounced in full, unlike the "avv-" in Alves, the village. But I believe I am correct that the final "-s" in your surname is pronounced as "-sh"? So unless you tell me different, that still means that the two names are pronounced very differently, which makes it unlikely they are linked other than by coincidence. Author: gbell152 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.mor.general/2374.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Unlikely. I imagine you are basing your supposition on how the two words are spelled, but when tracing linguistic links, it is the pronunciation that counts, not how they happen to have been written. And these two names sound quite different. I once learned a little Potuguese, and one of the things which remains in my mind is that the letter "s" at the end of a word is always pronounced like "sh", which would make your surname something like "al-vesh". The village and parish in Moray, on the other hand, is, I think, usually pronounced "avves" - that is, the "l" is not sounded. So I am inclined to think that the similarity in spelling is merely a coincidence. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The James Grant, born 16 Aug 1839, a brother of Anne....was also a distiller who went on to establish the Highland Park distillery in the Orkneys & so was quite well to do.....He was also a brother of my husband's gr-grandfather, Peter Grant b. 1834 who married Helen Gordon of Dufftown, they had 4 boys, and the family emigrated to Canada in 1872 as Peter worked on the railway system.
