    1. [MORANDOL] Grocery stores in Moberly
    2. sent to me by former resident of Moberly. Subject: RE: [MORANDOL] 412 Emerson St, Moberly, Missouri Date: 1/24/2008 12:05:12 A.M. Central Standard Time From: _jdebellis@uwf.edu_ (mailto:jdebellis@uwf.edu) Reply To: To: _ITSJBAGBY@aol.com_ (mailto:ITSJBAGBY@aol.com) CC: BCC: Sent on: Hi James M Bagby, ( _ITSJBAGBY@aol.com_ (mailto:ITSJBAGBY@aol.com) ) I'm replying to your email because my email is webmail and I can't send messages to the list for some reason. If you could share this with the list, I'd appreciate it. Growing up in the Moberly area, I watched with great dismay as the neighborhood grocers closed in the 1970's and 1980s as the older generation passed on, the big chains became more entrenched and the neighborhood elementary schools closed. I remember that each of the 6 elementary schools (South Park, North Park, East Park, Southeast Park, Central and West Park) all had small neighborhood grocers within a short walk of the school. The one near SOuth Park was down 4th street about a block and was named Peyton's. The one near Central was a few blocks from the school and probably almost as close to the Junior High on Rollins Street. It was named Jack's and my grandparents shopped there. It was backed up to an alley between Rollins and Reed Street (800 block I think) and my grandparents lived between the Warson's which was directly behind the store and the Nichols on Reed Street. P.K. Weis lived next to the Warson's or a house down. It was truly the glory days of Moberly. I don't specifically remember the one near Southeast Park, but I do remember one near the others that on rare occasion my mother might stop at. By the way there was also an IGA at Concannon and the street that ran from Rollins to Concannon in front of the junior high and post office (or Tannehill Park where the lion set that in a later generation a couple of Missouri Tiger football papers absconded with in the late 1980's). 3. Wow, I'm loving these little grocery store stories................we lived at 217 Farror St and I attended St. Mary's Catholic School which was just a block up the street. When I was 8 years old (1953), I was riding my sister's brand new tricycle. The cycle was too tall for her and my Grandfather put wooden blocks on the pedals and held them in place with cotter pins. I was pedaling too fast, held my legs out to coast and the pin caught the back of my leg and made a 6" gash on the back of my calf. After Dr. Harold McCormick stitched it up, I was sent home for complete bedrest for 2 weeks. There was a neighborhood grocery and I only remember the owners as "John and Wilma" who closed the store one morning and walked to our house and gave me a box of 12 Hershey Bars to help my recuperation. We weren't friends; just customers...........but, that's what folks did years ago. Moberly was definitely a "Mayberry RFD" kinda place back then. Thanks for the memories! 3. I've printed out all of the messages and will try to answer them all in this message. Jane - the grocery stores near the six elementary schools were: North Park, Ted Grimshaw had a store at 428 Franklin Avenue. Added on and is now a house. East Park, Jack Ramsey's store at the corner of Barrow and Porter. Torn down. Southeast Park, I don't remember one being very close, but there was one on Promenade and another, Croft's, on East Logan. There may have been more, but I was seldom in that part of town. South Park, as you said Peyton's Market on South Fourth. Now a dog groomer's place. Central - there was one directly across the street. I can't remember the name of it. And the one you mentioned on West Rollins. It has had a number of different names but Clements Market is the one I remember best. That is what it was called when I was at MJC. Now an upholstery shop. West Park - I don't remember any being real close, but there probably was. The lion which was stolen from Tannehill Park is now in Lion's Park on Beuth Road, I believe. At one time it was in a fountain in the smaller Tannehill Park behind the Post Office. It has been stolen several times, but keeps coming back! James - Temple Stephens had a store on Johnson Street a couple blocks north of the Post Office between West End and Franklin Sts. After you made the curve at the North end of Johnson and it became Concannon, Van's Market was in the first block on the North Side. A couple of blocks West, at Burkholder St, was Earl B. Noel Market on the South Side facing Burkholder. I don't remember another store further West and there is no second hand store. I lived on Concannon 1947-1950 and walked to the Junior College every day. There might have been one there before that, but not since then. The building at the SE corner of Concannon and Emerson is now a house, but it does look like it might have been a store. When we lived on West Reed St. there was a little store directly behind us on West Coates St. I can still picture the owners in my mind, but sure can't remember their names. But that was 50 years ago so I guess I'm entitled to forget in that time! On North Ault St., at the corner of N. Ault and Madison Ave. was Flayhan's. I've certainly enjoyed reading the posts. Keep it up. Shirly

    1. [MORANDOL] Lena Chism Obituary
    2. Thresa Chism
    3. Lena Chism, 1905-2008 Published Sunday, January 20, 2008 Columbia Dailey Tribune Lena St. Clair Chism, 102, of Jones Wildwood Care Center in Madison, formerly of Higbee, Harrisburg and the Sturgeon area, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, at Boone Hospital Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at Fenton Funeral Chapel in Centralia with the Rev. Bob Flanagan, pastor of Sturgeon Christian Church, officiating. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Christian Church Cemetery near Higbee. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. She was born April 28, 1905, a triplet, in a log cabin in Howard County near Harrisburg, the daughter of John Morrison and Pearl King St. Clair. She was married to Frank St. Clair in 1927, and he preceded her in death in 1939. Later, on Jan. 11, 1950, in Randolph County, she was married to Leonard Chism, and he preceded her in death July 9, 1986. Survivors include a son, Lowell St. Clair and wife Barbara of Columbia; one daughter, Helen Bowne and husband Buford of Sturgeon; two daughters-in-law, Earlene St. Clair of Clark and Shirley St. Clair of Moberly; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Franklin Wayne St. Clair and Morrison Wayne St. Clair; two brothers; and two sisters. Mrs. Chism was the oldest living member of Mount Pleasant Christian Church near Higbee. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, crossword puzzles and Scrabble. To all who knew and loved her she was lovingly called "Mam." Honorary pallbearers will be Kris St. Clair, Luke Taylor, Adam Taylor, Michael Templeton, Zachary Templeton, Jacob St. Clair, Jason St. Clair, Justin Wallace, Joshua Wallace and Austin Orth. Pallbearers will be Frank St. Clair, Vann St. Clair, Jim St. Clair, Steve St. Clair, Andy St. Clair and Will St. Clair. Memorials are suggested to Mount Pleasant Christian Church. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Just a couple of clarifications for anyone interested. She was the only survivor of the set of triplets. The other two died within two weeks of birth I believe. Also, the name of her second son preceding her in death should be Morrison Doyle St. Clair.
