Jim, I really can't shed any light on your earlier e-mail about John Coombs, Arnell Bagby, etc. I just purchased Volume 3 and 4 of the Sturgeon Missouri Leader from Sherry Raleigh-Adams and ran across a brief piece that said....... Sturgeon Missouri Leader Thursday May 27, 1909 Pg. 5 Mrs. Hanna Coombe, aged 77 years, died Sunday night at her home in Columbia. She is survived by six children. On Pg. 4 of the same paper/same day was an article that caught my eye because of the Bagby name. I don't know if this is a relative of yours or not, but thought I'd pass it on. A year ago Thomas R. Bagby was shot down in the night as he approached the house of his sweet heart, Beulah Carter, in Randolph co. Irvin Carter, 23 years old, the confessed slayer, has committed suicide in the house from which the fatal shots were fired. When the coroner arrived at the house Carter's body was lying on the floor with arms folded across the breast, and a revolver with all chambers loaded was on the dead boy's chest. The mother's attention was called to the fact that the revolver had not been fired. She got another weapon with one empty chamber from an adjoining room and said that she, in her excitement, had placed the wrong weapon near her dead son. [Long, detailed article.] If anyone's research centers around Boone, Howard, and/or Randolph Counties, the newspaper abstracts that Sherry has worked on for quite some time is an extremely valuable, informative, and entertaining, research tool. They are VERY affordable and I would highly recommend her work to anyone reading this. If you're interested, go to www.gonewestpublications.com. -- "Life is not the way it's supposed to be.
