    3. Carey: How wonderful of you. Thanks. For your info, the History of Randolph County article has the incorrect date for the Dr. Winn/Ida Cubbage marriage. It says Oct 15, 1919 and their son was born in 1906. I have their marriage date as Nov 15, 1899. Charles -----Original Message----- From: Carey Bankhead [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, April 03, 2006 1:18 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [MoRandolph] Winn's From 'History of Randolph County' - l930 - By Alex Waller: "Dr James W. Winn, a successful physician and surgeon, has practiced his profession at Higbee, Mo., and vicinity for over 25 years. He was born at Fayette, Mo., Aug. 10, 1871, and is a son of George and Frances (Hitt) Winn, being the eighth of their ten children. George Winn was a farmer in Howard County all of his life and died in January, 1902. He was prominent in his community, serving as judge of the county court l2 years. At one time he owned 800 acres of the finest land in the county. He was a Democrat. His father served in the Union army during the Civil War. Frances (Hitt) Winn was born in Culpepper County, Va. She is now living at Fayette, Mo., at the advanced age of 84 years. Dr. Winn was reared on his father's farm and attended the public school for his elementary education and entered the University in l892. Two years later he entered the Missouri Medical College at St. Louis, Mo., graduating with the degree of Doctor of Medicine in l895. Within a short period, he located at Yates, Randolph County, remaining there until l9l3, when he came to Higbee where he has since been engaged in practice, excepting the time he served in the army. When the United States entered the World War, he responded to the president's call for volunteers in the medical department and enlisted Aug. l2, l9l8, was commissioned Oct. 9, l9l8, and assigned to duty at Camp Arthur, Texas, April 2nd. He was transferred to San Antonio, Texas and spent six months and six days on the bordere. With headquarters at Sierra Blanca, Dr. Winn had charge of that post and one camp at Hester's ranch. Dr. Winn, soon after the cessation of hostilities, was discharged from the service and returned to Higbee, where he has since been devoting his time to professional duties. On Oct. l5, l9l9, he was married to Miss Ida M. Cubbage of Randolph County. She is a daughter of Harvey and Mary (Duncan) Cubbage, natives of Kentucky, who were early settlers of Randolph County. One child has been born to Dr. and Mrs. Winn, George Warren. While in college, Dr. Will also studied pharmacy and his state license is dated April 2, l895. From May, l895, to April l9l3, he owned and managed a drug store in Yates when he purchased the Dr. Broen drug store in Higbee which he conducted along with his practice until he entered the government service. Dr. Winn is a Democrat and a member of the Baptist church. he holds membership in the Masonic Lodge and Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge. He is one of the progressive men of this section and is a stockholder in the Yates Savings Bank." [Charles, please note that the Dr. "Broen" should read "Brown," since it refers to Dr. Alfred Brown, interestingly a hard shell Republican, who operated a practice/pharmacy in the Randolph Hotel on south Randolph St., where he died suddenly. Later Dr. Winn would practice from his pharmacy next to the Higbee Savings Bank on Division St.] From 'The Higbee News' Apr. 4, 19l3: "ANOTHER DOCTOR FOR HIGBEE -- DR. J. W. WINN BUYS THE BROWN DRUG STORE AND WILL LOCATE HERE. Dr. J. W. Winn of Yates this week closed a deal for the drug store of the late Dr. A. J. Brown, and will locate among us for the practice of his profession. He will have the store open and ready for business some time next week, and will move his family here about May lst. Dr. Winn is too well known to most of our readers to need any introduction to the people of Higbee, being born and reared not far from here in Howard county and for almost twenty years has been located in our little neighboring city of Yates. He has built up an extensive practice in that locality, and the people there will give him up with a great deal of regret. he is a graduate of one of the best medical schools in the state, is a hard student, keeping abreast of the times, and stands high in the estimation of his fellow practioners, both as a gentleman and a physician, as he does with all who know hiim. We are sorry to see Yates lose such a good and enterprising citizen, and at the same time glad that he is to cast his lot among the good people of Higbee. The News joins others in extending him the hand of fellowship, and wishes and predicts for h im abundant success." From "The Higbee News" Dec. 30, l950: DR. J. W. WINN TO LEAVE HIGBEE -- Friends, especially 'old timers' were sorry to see the closing out sale of Dr. Winn's Drug Store. Dr. Winn has practiced medicinie in this vicinity for over fifty years, starting his practice in Yates in l895. He came to Higbee in l9l3 and has maintained a drug store in connection with his spractice since that time. During all these years he has enjoyed a profitable, helpful career. However, he now expects to retire to the home of his son, who rresides in Boonville, and is one of the head surgeons at St. Joseph's hospital there. Dr. Winn is looking forward to being closer to his wife who has been confined to the hospital, in Boonville, for over a year. The community wishes Dr. Winn a contented retirement." From 'The Higbee News,' Dec. l3, l95l - FUNERAL SERVICES FOR DR. J. W. WINN TODAY IN BOONVILLE " Funeral services for D. J. W. Winn, former Higbee and Yates physician, will be held at two o'clock this afternoon from the Goodman and Bollar Funeral Home, in Boonville, rev. J. M. Wilcoxin, of Fayette, will officiate at the services. Burial will be in the Walnut Grove Cemetery, in Boonville. Dr. Winn, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Winn, was born in Howard County August l0, l871. He was married to Miss Ida Mae Cubbage, who preceded him in death. Dr. Winn was widely known, having practiced his profession for oveer 50 years in the Yates and Higbee community. He is survived by a son, Dr. G. W. Winn, of Boonville, and a brother, John B. Winn, of Duncan, Oklahoma. Three grandchildren, also nieces and nephews survive." [Note from Carey: I'm interested in Dr. Winn's mother's connections to the Hitt family of Howard Co., since my wife descends from them, i.e., Hamilton & Sarah Hitt Thornhill of Bonne Femme Twp.] ==== MORANDOL Mailing List ==== Questions for the List Administrator?
