Barbara, There was a man named Allen Phillips who lived near Duncan's Bridge AKA Leesburg in Monroe County who was killed in that fashion. He was called out from his "dinner" at noon out to his porch and shot dead. My gg-aunt Eliza and husband, James Bane, later bought his farm. There is a cemetery on the property, which I have visited. I had noted a grave for Allen Phillips, b Jan. 24, 1803, d Oct. 15, 1864. Perhaps this is the same story, since you have a Phillips marriage.
