Does anyone know the name of the man killed in Randolph County by Quantrill and his Riders? I have read of it in books about Quantrill. The story told in my family concerns my Great Great Grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Cooley Knight Heifner. She is the daughter of William and Elizabeth Fields Cooley, born 1845. Sarah was married first to a man named Knight who, according to family legend was killed by bushwhackers. I can find nothing to confirm this story. Also on internet, one site states that Sarah Elizabeth herself was a Captain in the Confederate Army with General Price. Another site lists a Knight man in Randolph County murdered by drowning with a stone tied to him. I can find no more about that story. Sarah had two children by the Knight man. One was named Nettie that married a Phillips. In 1868 Sarah married my grandfather, George Washington Heifner, son of Bartholomew Heifner. I would like information on the murder of Sarah's first husband, whose last name was Knight. I do not know the first name. I suspect this marriage was between census, therefore not recorded. It is possible the marriage may have taken place in a neighboring state such as Chariton. Where did General Price live at the beginning of the Civil War? It is believed that the William Cooley and the Price family were neighbors. Was there any newspaper in Randolph County during the Civl War? I have also read the newspaper during that time was moved to Macon County. Can anyone shed light on this history? Thanks for any help. Barbara Wisdom
