This is interesting as the story in the family is that the first husband of Sarah Elizabeth Cooley was killed on the porch. I never knew the family ever to be in Monroe County and this man would have been many years older than my gg grandmother that was born in 1845. According to the book, "The Devil Knows How to Ride" by Edward Leslie, it was the year 1864 when Quantrill was in and out of that part of Mo. Thanks for sharing this information. Where in Monroe County would this be and were the county lines then as they are today? Our family thinks Knight was the name of the person killed and Phillips the name of the daughter, Nettie's husband. I have an obit for Earl A. Phillips, Nettie's son that died in Kansas City, Ks. about 1940. He married Mary Randolph of Moberly and Earl Phillips is buried at Oakland Cemetery. A sister, Lucretia Phillips Hall is also buried in Moberly. Nettie's half sister, my great grandmother was Levy Heifner Gipson. My children and grandchildren would like to know if this grandmother, Sarah Cooley was a Cpt. in the Civil War but since it must have been illegal to do so, perhaps we will never know. Sarah lost a brother in the Union prison somewhere and her father, William and another brother Joseph were in the Alton, Ill Union prison but set free at the end of the war.
