No. 12, Page 1, Col. 6--ED. S. ST. CLAIR PASSES ON. Dies at His Home, near Myers, at Ripe Old Age of 84 Years--Interment at Mt. Pleasant.--Ed. S. St. Clair, one of the patriarchs of Howard county, whose illness had been noted in the NEWS from time to time for several months, passed peacefully away at his home in Mt. Pleasant church vicinity at 6 o'clock Thursday, July 19, 1928, from the infirmities of age, being in his 85th year. He was born in Virginia on March 16, 1844 and moved to Missouri in 1857, locating in Howard county, and where he had resided since. He was married to Nancy Bailey on May 19, 1868. They were the parents of six children, four of whom, with the mother, survive, viz: I. T. St. Clair, Fayette; Mrs. John Douglas, Kansas City, Kas.; Mrs. H. M. Walker and John M. St. Clair, of Howard county. Two sons, George and Arch, died many years ago. Besides the children he leaves 20 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, and a host of friends to mourn his passing. Mr. St. Clair was a Confederate veteran, having served almost four years in the army of the South in Company E, 8th Missouri Cavalry, in Shelby's famous brigade, and saw hard service. He was a devout member of the Christian church, with which he united at the age of 29 years, and lived his christianity in his every day life seven days a week. He had the manner and bearing of the old-fashioned Southern gentleman, which he really was, and numbered his friends by his acquaintances. No man was held in higher esteem than he, and in his passing his family and the community have suffered a distinct loss. Funeral services were held at Mt. Pleasant church by the Rev. Goslin in the presence of a very large crowd of sorrowing neighbors and friends and interment made in the cemetery there. The NEWS joins the community in deepest sympathy to the bereaved family. No. 12, Page 1, Col. 6--BITTEN BY SNAKE--George Hudson had an experience the other day that he is not anxious to have repeated, having been bitten by a snake. He was out picking blackberries, and seeing some very fine ones in the shade of a bush and just above the ground, he reached in to take hold of the vine to raise it, when a snake, commonly called land moccasin, bit him on the arm. Believing that the snake might be venomous, and not wishing to take any risk, Mr. Hudson took out his pocket knife and slashed a gash in his arm causing a good flow of blood from the wound. So far as we know he has suffered no ill effects from the bite. Thursday, 26 July1928, Vol 42. No. 12, Page 5, Col. 1--LOCAL AND PERSONAL--Born, on the 23rd, to Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Fuhrman, a son.
