Hi Tom, Not sure where I got the info I think from my Mom - but here it is: John Richard Morris b 26 Jul 1912 I don't have a marriage date for them. We are all well too. Mom is not feeling well, but hopefully that will improve. Sandy On Sep 4, 2007, at 8:42 PM, Tom Waters wrote: > Yes, it is the same Sammie. I've been trying to follow this all night and have a bit of info and a question. According to Harlan's Transcription of Marriages and Deaths for Randolph Co., MO 1854-1949, Ruby Towles married Gordon Ballew July 25, 1932, so wouldn't Sam Shiflett's first wife be Virginia Ballew? Also..........according to Sam's obit, he had 3 Shiflett children; Jeffrey, Jennifer, and Julie. How do Ryan Farthing, Trevor Wilhite, and Paige Wilhite fit into the picture. Were they children of his second wife's previous marriages? On 9/4/07, Tom Waters <thomaswaters@mchsi.com> wrote: > > Yes, it is the same Sammie. Yes, it is the same Sammie. I didn't have the information about John Richard Morris and was going to ask Mother who Ruby's first husband was. However it is Ruby Towles daughter by her first marriage. Mother had told me Virginia, Ruby's daughter, was married to Sammie Shiflett and divorced. I knew Virginia Towles did not sound right; but when I looked in my data base I didn't have the information on her father, John Morris, so am glad to get that. Thanks. Hope you are well. This is interesting as the story in the family is that the first husband of Sarah Elizabeth Cooley was killed on the porch. I never knew the family ever to be in Monroe County and this man would have been many years older than my gg grandmother that was born in 1845. According to the book, "The Devil Knows How to Ride" by Edward Leslie, it was the year 1864 when Quantrill was in and out of that part of Mo. Thanks for sharing this information. Where in Monroe County would this be and were the county lines then as they are today? Our family thinks Knight was the name of the person killed and Phillips the name of the daughter, Nettie's husband. I have an obit for Earl A. Phillips, Nettie's son that died in Kansas City, Ks. about 1940. He married Mary Randolph of Moberly and Earl Phillips is buried at Oakland Cemetery. A sister, Lucretia Phillips Hall is also buried in Moberly. Nettie's half sister, my great grandmother was Levy Heifner Gipson. My children and grandchildren would like to know if this grandmother, Sarah Cooley was a Cpt. in the Civil War but since it must have been illegal to do so, perhaps we will never know. Sarah lost a brother in the Union prison somewhere and her father, William and another brother Joseph were in the Alton, Ill Union prison but set free at the end of the war. Barbara, There was a man named Allen Phillips who lived near Duncan's Bridge AKA Leesburg in Monroe County who was killed in that fashion. He was called out from his "dinner" at noon out to his porch and shot dead. My gg-aunt Eliza and husband, James Bane, later bought his farm. There is a cemetery on the property, which I have visited. I had noted a grave for Allen Phillips, b Jan. 24, 1803, d Oct. 15, 1864. Perhaps this is the same story, since you have a Phillips marriage. In a message dated 8/27/2007 8:07:30 A.M. Central Daylight Time, kcecyr@swbell.net writes: Noah You don't mention who you are asking about Alex Denny. However since I have one of the "Denny Genealogy" book (Book 2) which covers my ancestors, and they are the ones that came to Howard county, I will put my 2 cents worth in. I don't see any mention in the Denny Genealogy of the Walkers or Walters that you mention in your email. They also do not appear in my own research of the Alexander Denny family from NC and Howard Co, MO. So I would say there is probably no connection with the Howard Co, MO Dennys. =========================================================== While in Mount Moriah Cemetery KCMO today I was photographing the headstone of Probate Judge in Fayette, MO.. Cora lee (Underwood) (Wells) Bagby. w/o Judge David Bagby. who's 1 st wife was Narcissa Francess Denny. What was strange, She was within arms reach were 3 Denny Headstones. 1st a Charles P Denny who died in 1951 ( See Mo Death Certificate) His wife was a Jessie Denny & his father was Charles A Denny & Martha T Armett. Was your original post abt a Jessie Denny? I was unable to recover your post . I had deleted it. I'm not sure this is a considence or not ? I can't connect any Charles Denny's into the Ran Or Howard Co Denny's James M. James M. Bagby This is what I have on your message about Bagby/Denny. What do you think? Narcissa Denny (Humphrey Best Denny, James, Alexander, George) was b. at Mt Airy, MO 9 Feb 1859. She was married to David Bagby 9 Mar 1882, She died May 1890. Child: John Bagby. John Bagby (Narcissa Denny, Humphrey Best Denny, James, Alexander, George) married Ella Rausberg. Children: Narlee Bagby, m. Walter J. D. Walker and Dorothy Denny Bagby. John Bagby is also reported to have married Cora UNDERWOOD in September 1893. Charles A. Denny, Charles P. Denny and Martha T. Armett do not appear in the Denny Genealogy Book 2. Cecy Rice
If you or someone you know has access to the Thomps Dameron files (he was a postmaster at Huntsville and had a column on local lore in I don't know how many area papers.) I've read them in the files of 'The Higbee News,' and I seem to recall his mentioning a killing as you describe.)
Does anyone know the name of the man killed in Randolph County by Quantrill and his Riders? I have read of it in books about Quantrill. The story told in my family concerns my Great Great Grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Cooley Knight Heifner. She is the daughter of William and Elizabeth Fields Cooley, born 1845. Sarah was married first to a man named Knight who, according to family legend was killed by bushwhackers. I can find nothing to confirm this story. Also on internet, one site states that Sarah Elizabeth herself was a Captain in the Confederate Army with General Price. Another site lists a Knight man in Randolph County murdered by drowning with a stone tied to him. I can find no more about that story. Sarah had two children by the Knight man. One was named Nettie that married a Phillips. In 1868 Sarah married my grandfather, George Washington Heifner, son of Bartholomew Heifner. I would like information on the murder of Sarah's first husband, whose last name was Knight. I do not know the first name. I suspect this marriage was between census, therefore not recorded. It is possible the marriage may have taken place in a neighboring state such as Chariton. Where did General Price live at the beginning of the Civil War? It is believed that the William Cooley and the Price family were neighbors. Was there any newspaper in Randolph County during the Civl War? I have also read the newspaper during that time was moved to Macon County. Can anyone shed light on this history? Thanks for any help. Barbara Wisdom
