The family has been told for years, since these folks passed on, that there is Indian blood on both sides of the family (gggrandma and gggrandpa both). I would love to visit with them and find out if it is true, and, if so, who was the Indian and more about them. Sharon --------------------------------- Be a better pen pal. I received a scan of the marriage article from the library today, and got a two-for-one deal. Moberly Daily Monitor, 22 Dec 1898 Cupid's Capers Charles Melone, a freight conductor of this city and Miss Effie Gerow, were married in St. Louis on Tuesday. They arrived here yesterday afternoon, and will make their home here. Mr. Melone is an intelligent, ambitious and promising young railroad man, while the bride is said to be a young lady of graceful person and winning manners. At 9 o'clock last night, by the Rev. S. P. Cresap, pastor of the Fourth Street M. E. Church at the parsonage, Mr. J. C. Nichols of the Wabash shops and Mrs. N. J. Melone, of 514 Burkholder street, were united in marriage. Mrs. Melone is the mother of Charles Melone, whose marriage notice appears above. These marriages in one family again illustrate Cupids active and successful campaign this year. The Monitor wishes them all a long, happy and prosperous life. **My notes: 22 Dec 1898 was a Thursday according to the perpetual calendar. The index in Harlan's Transcription apparently says J. O. Nichols, but the article looks more like J. C. Nichols to me; however, his death certificate, obituary, military records, etc., give his name as James F. Nichols. Nancy Jane Melone was the widow of James F. Melone, and daughter of James O. King and Minerva Collett of Monroe County. Linda
Thanks a lot, Wilma! I'll write to the library tomorrow. Linda, According to Harlan's Transcription of Marriages & Deaths in Randolph Co., MO from 1854-1949, Book 1890-1899, Pg 26 states that J.O. Nichols married Mrs. N. J. Melone December 21, 1898. Their marriage article appeared in the December 22, 1898, Moberly Daily Monitor. You can obtain a copy of the marriage notice by contacting the Moberly Public Library. If someone on the list has access to marriage notices around 1898-99, I'd like to find out whether James F. Nichols and Nancy King Melone were married in Randolph County. The 1900 census shows them living in Moberly and married one year. Thanks! Linda Deppner

I am thrilled to find another Hockersmith/Hockensmith researcher. You may find some of this family in Estill Co. or Madison Co., Ky. Other researchers think Jacob Hockersmith is the son of Michael Hockersmith and Michael son of Conrad Hockensmith. There is little information on Michael's family on the net. I am not certain how you would connect these families but there are some Hockersmith descendents working on it. I have a couple addresses if you want to connect also because they share info and send it to each other. They now have the list of Jacob's listed on the death index on Randolph Co. website. They say there is no way this Jacob is Jacob, Jr. It has been decided by elimination that our Jacob is not the son of Jacob, son or Conrad but highly likely to be Michael's son. Someone has just jumped to conclusions that he was Jacob, Jr. The Hockersmith researchers found a marriage license for Anna Skinner and Jacob Hockersmith in Madison Co., Ky. I'll forward what they sent me. Glad to find you! i am semi looking for Hockersmith in Howard/Randolph Co. Mostly because my ancestor's sister Alace Dougherty and sister Sidney Ann Dougherty both married Joseph Hockersmith born KY ca 1820. As far as I know, Sidney Ann married Joseph about 1840 had a daughter Emily Jane born ca 1841; wife Sidney Ann died 20 Aug 1841 (born 7 Feb 1819 Jessamine Co KY), possibly in childbirth. Joseph Hockersmith then married her sister Alace ca 1843 and had son George W Hockersmith born ca 1856. Alice Dougherty Hockersmith died 25 Jul 1881 and is buried in New Hope Cemetery. I don't have record of the marriage but Joe's second one was probably in Howard Co; the first one MAY have been in MO but possibly in KY as that is about the time the Doughertys migrated into Howard Co. Some came a little earlier, some a little later. I have garnered some other onfo on Hockersmith, mostly from the census but some from the Howard County Cemeteries book. Happy to share. I would like to know about where Joseph came from. At a wild guess, I would think possibly VA. The Doughertys came from PA into VA and then into Kentucky, arriving there before 1800. The family history gives the mother for the three younger children as Minerva and all the older children to Mary J. which would mean Mary Jane's death may have been in 1853 . I really appreciate this information. You are good to find this much information on Minerva. I wonder if James Grisham was a brother to Mary Hockersmith's Heifner['s first husband. I think his name was John Grisham but he either died in Shelby Co., In or maybe Jassamine Co., Ky where these families were prior to coming to Mo. This is very helpful. I've seen Heifner spelled numerous ways. Thank you very much. Every bit of information puts a new piece into the puzzle. Are you the same Evans that had the relatives in the Kaseyville area? I may have an old clipping or so on the Evans family. I recently inherited the family clippings. If I find any, would you like to have them? Minerva was a daughter of Elliott R. and Polley (Trent) Thomas. She married first James Grisham in Chariton county 19 Sep 1838. James is dead or moved on by 1850, as Minerva is in the 1850 Census living with her mother and father with three daughters. Bart and Minerva can be found in the 1870 Census living in Jackson Township. The spelling of the last name is "Hifner". You may also be able to find information at the Huntsville,Cemetary itself. If your Robert is buried there. And if you know where he is I would be more than willing to photgraph the stone for you when we go there in the spring for our trek down. My husband said that your Patton family farm if was located in Salt Spring Township would have been South of Huntsville, but can't quite recall it. And you could be very right about the coal mine.
