As you said, Jack Ramsey owned a little grocery store at the corner of Barrow and Porter Streets just across the street from East Park School. When my husband and I were first married we lived at 528 Barrow and did most of our shopping there. We didn't own a car and could only buy what we could carry at one time. Needless to say, we made a lot of trips! There was also a little store on Farror Street but it did not have the variety that Jack did, so we didn't shop there. It was probably in the 400 or 500 block. There was not a street dividing those two blocks, so I don't remember for sure what the address was. Hello Everyone, Thank you all for the posts on grocery stores in Moberly. My grandfather, Asa Finnell, had a grocery store on the corner of Franklin St. and Greeley, while living a few houses away on Franklin. My aunt and uncle, the Ervins, and another aunt, Merle Stamper, lived in the home until sometime in the 90's. If anyone remembers this or has any information, I would so appreciate knowing more about it. After the store was sold, when visiting my aunt in Moberly in the 60's, I would watch as she would pick up the operator connected call, (no dial phones for her!), order her groceries and they would be delivered by a teenaged boy. Being from Los Angeles, I thought this was absolutely amazing and immensely charming. How I envied those of you who were fortunate enough to grow up in that area! Again, thank you for all the posts. Michele Cooper, now living in the greater NYC area. ************** Start the year off right. Easy ways to stay in shape. http://body.aol.com/fitness/winter-exercise?NCID=aolcmp00300000002489
Wow, It sure is fun reminissing about those family ran stores in Moberly. In about 1967, I remember the one over by West Elementary and also Vans IGA. Every Friday night when Dad and Mom would go dancing they would give my sister and I a whole dollar to go to the little store just a jag from Collins street. For that dollar we came back with a full small bag of penny candy, I also got a cream filled long john, and a bottle of soda. Wow, what happened to our dollar.? And stay up running the "safe neighborhood till 1-2 in the morning and behaving, Ha. and get to bed before Dad and Mom got home from their date. Sure wish we had a few of those times today. Listening to the talk about this little grocery store makes me wonder if this is the store that I was told that my cousin Jack Ramsey owned? It was supposedly located Barrow and Porter Street. Can anybody confirm this information for me. Thanks in advance. Wow, I'm loving these little grocery store stories................we lived at 217 Farror St and I attended St. Mary's Catholic School which was just a block up the street. When I was 8 years old (1953), I was riding my sister's brand new tricycle. The cycle was too tall for her and my Grandfather put wooden blocks on the pedals and held them in place with cotter pins. I was pedaling too fast, held my legs out to coast and the pin caught the back of my leg and made a 6" gash on the back of my calf. After Dr. Harold McCormick stitched it up, I was sent home for complete bedrest for 2 weeks. There was a neighborhood grocery and I only remember the owners as "John and Wilma" who closed the store one morning and walked to our house and gave me a box of 12 Hershey Bars to help my recuperation. Thank you Larry. That's wonderful that you were able to confirm that for me. It helps to back up the family story to know that my uncle recognized the right lot. He remembered the way it sloped upward as it went from the from to the back of the lot. Now all I have to do is find someone who might have a photograph of it. Wonder what it was called in 1930 in the Moberly Directory. I'm a couple of hundred miles from the Historical Society, but I know I had asked someone in the past to look up the directory in 1930 for the Levi Lloyd store and they said it wasn't listed. I wonder what name it went under? Is there a way to use the directory and look up an address, rather than a name? I've never seen the book. Thank you again Larry, this was extremely helpful to me. I remember that little store on the south side of Conconnon, 2 in fact. one was on corner of Burkholder the other on a few blocks away, west. Now a second hand store. Then going South & East was the Temple Stevens Store. corner of Coats or Reed.Across from Post office.PO used to be a small city park. Names ? All three buildings still standing. Their was a little store on Franklin, North side. Close to a G.School. Between Dorser & Emerson When you see it, you can tell it once was a small store. Name ? Hi Larry, I went into my photo files and found the photograph that I took of the corner where the store was located, and it was the intersection of Emerson and Franklin. I also took photographs of the empty lot. So we must be talking about a different empty lot. I thank you for your trouble, just the same. Kathy Bowlin ----- Original Message ----- From: "Larry M. Kathy Try the Moberly City Directories at the Randolph County Historical Society in Moberly.
It's very possible that it could have been a converted house. I believe my great-grandfather did live on the premises when he owned the store there. The family talked about the store being in the front of the building and the living quarters in the back. We found the lot by driving down Emerson, and when we found the address, the sidewalks that still existed from the lot did face the opposite street from Emerson. I got the address from the 1930 census records, and I photographed the sign that was the corner of that lot, but I don't have the photograph in front of me at the moment. Do you happen to have a photograph of the building? I'm sure if I can show a photograph of the building to my uncle, he could identify whether it was the same store. A cousin has a photograph of my grandfather inside the store, but we have no external photo's. My great-grandfather, Levi "Lee" Lloyd, was a coal miner and a Pentecostal preacher. He had lived in Higbee until about 1920 when he and his family moved to Illinois to mine coal. His eldest son William, died of black damp in the mines in 1929. Lee had nearly died from a cave in 10 years earlier, and perhaps he thought he should try another profession. With the insurance money he got from William's death, he moved his family to Moberly and he bought or rented the place that was to become his store. Dad said they went belly-up because it was during the depression and Lee gave credit to everyone until he was bankrupt. The store didn't last more than a year and they returned to Illinois where Lee died in 1947. Thank you for your response. This gives me a lot more than I had before. Hello listers, I'm hoping someone can help me find an old photograph or some information about the small grocery store that stood at 412 Emerson St, Moberly Missouri. I think this was at the intersection of Emerson and Franklin? It is now an empty lot. I recently visited the site with my uncle, who remembered the location from when he was a small child. It was owned in 1930 by Levi "Lee" Lloyd. I believe he only owned it for a year or possibly less before it went belly-up under his ownership. I'm interested in knowing anything about the location and the building, when it was built, or torn down or destroyed? Thanks, Kathy Bowlin

Sorry to intrude -- I noticed this conversation late in the game. Are you speaking of the Dan'l Hunt who became Governor or Arizona? He originated in Huntsville, and as an Arizona history fan, I've read of his tenure, burial, etc. Again, disregard if this is way out in left field.
