    3. The store on Farror St in the 50's was owned by the Ash family, one of which was Kennth who was in my class, there was also one on Vincel St the next street north of Farror and it was run by the Burton family. Three were three stores in the Southeast Park School area, on East Logan and Mckinley street was Edward's Mkt, on Carpenter between McKinley and Monroe was Crofts and on Promanade and Halack wwas Rensallers plus on South Morley south of Carpenter the was at least one more. Jane - the grocery stores near the six elementary schools were: North Park, Ted Grimshaw had a store at 428 Franklin Avenue. Added on and is now a house. East Park, Jack Ramsey's store at the corner of Barrow and Porter. Torn down. Southeast Park, I don't remember one being very close, but there was one on Promenade and another, Croft's, on East Logan. There may have been more, but I was seldom in that part of town. South Park, as you said Peyton's Market on South Fourth. Now a dog groomer's place. Central - there was one directly across the street. I can't remember the name of it. And the one you mentioned on West Rollins. It has had a number of different names but Clements Market is the one I remember best. That is what it was called when I was at MJC. Now an upholstery shop. West Park - I don't remember any being real close, but there probably was. The lion which was stolen from Tannehill Park is now in Lion's Park on Beuth Road, I believe. At one time it was in a fountain in the smaller Tannehill Park behind the Post Office. It has been stolen several times, but keeps coming back! James - Temple Stephens had a store on Johnson Street a couple blocks north of the Post Office between West End and Franklin Sts. After you made the curve at the North end of Johnson and it became Concannon, Van's Market was in the first block on the North Side. A couple of blocks West, at Burkholder St, was Earl B. Noel Market on the South Side facing Burkholder. I don't remember another store further West and there is no second hand store. I lived on Concannon 1947-1950 and walked to the Junior College every day. There might have been one there before that, but not since then. The building at the SE corner of Concannon and Emerson is now a house, but it does look like it might have been a store. When we lived on West Reed St. there was a little store directly behind us on West Coates St. I can still picture the owners in my mind, but sure can't remember their names. But that was 50 years ago so I guess I'm entitled to forget in that time! On North Ault St., at the corner of N. Ault and Madison Ave. was Flayhan's. I've certainly enjoyed reading the posts. Keep it up. 3. Wow! This is fantastic. For someone who didn't grow up in the area, this is good stuff. Please, keep it rolling. I'm loving hearing all of this, including the stories. Those of you who knew some of these shopkeepers might be able to relate stories of that to the folks who actually descended from these folks. We may have our own memories of our grandparents, but they were from one perspective and we remember them as family. Might be fun to hear what other folks remember about dealing with them as merchants or just neighbors. Keep it coming! And I can't speak for the Historical Society, but if any of you are able to dig through some old photographs and find prints of these businesses, I'd be willing to bet the Historical Society would take them. Copies if you don't want to give up the originals. Sure wish we could post photos on this list! 3. There used to be a grocery store on West Coates street. My grandparents (Cloyd Chenoweth and Freda Stewart) lived on West Coates, and I would walk up to that store. There also used to be one we called Mrs. Rentschler's on the other side of town. I believe it was on Promenade, but am not sure. We lived on Monroe and I went there many times as a girl. 2. Sounds like you are talking about Reeds corner. (old 63) Morley & 24 hwy Just north of the roller skating rink, I'm sure you remember that. Both are gone today. A Hardee & Big 8 Motel sets where Reeds Corner used to be. Their are old pictures of what Reeds corner looked like, on the walls of Hardee Their was a Hudson Gas Station at Marley on Coates. I think that was the very first Hudson Station in MO. I knew Mary Hudson who ran the Hudson Oil Company. Their History to. Don't know if her son is still alive. ----------------------- I have a picture somewhere of the store on Concannon & Burkholder. You can still read the stores name on the old rusty building. The other store that was near by was larger. It must have turned into a second hand store & junk shop . in maybe 1970s More like a junk yard today. Still their in 05. They built a post office in that small public park on Johnson Street. Temple Stevens was only a rock throw away on opposite side. Do you remember, just a little ways North of Temple Stevens & across the road on Johnson, their was a little leather shop. I loved to go in their & look at the saddles & smell the leather. Might have been a shoe shop to. Don't remember, then, I didn't wear shoes. Next i'll probably say i have never been to the Sycamore Hotel JMB Hello Everyone, This conversation has brought to mind the gas station and grocery store that my grandfather owned, there in Moberly. In fact, I have the butcher's block from the restaurant in the kitchen of my home. I don't remember the names of these places, and I think the building(s) are even gone now. But, When I was growing up 1950s and 1960s, there were there close to where the 2 main highways now cross. I think my parents mentioned that he had the businesses leased out, so his name (Leslie Combs Hudson) was possibly not part of the business name. The gas station would have been Standard Oil however. Does any of this bring back any menories to any of you who have lived in Moberly? Leslie Kohler **************Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music. Carpenter St. East Side Market - 315 Porter Edward's Market - 620 East Logan St. (This was close to Southeast Park School) Imperial Grocery - 1200 North Morley St. (I believe this was also a gas station that my dad worked at) Jackson's Market - 823 W. Rollins Jim's Thriftway - 1528 North Morley St. Kroger's Store - 530 West Reed Miller Grocery - 219 Collins St. Nelson Market - 1229 Holman Road Earl B. Noel Superette - 619 Burkholder North Park Market - 428 Franklin Ave. Payton's Market - 616 South 4th St. Quality Market - 419 East Carpenter Quinn Street Grocery - 1209 Quinn St. Ray's Fruit Market - 1621 North Morley Rentchler Grocery - 713 Promenade Safeway Food Store - 301 S. Morley (Now Save-More Foods) Staiger Market - 408 Johnson St. Temple Stephens Company - 101 West Lee (Headquarters) Temple Stephens Store - 114 South Williams St. Temple Stephens Store #57 - 319 North Morley Van's IGA Foodland - 619 Concannon Wilhite Grocery - 407 Taylor Wray's Market - 136 S. 6th. It is not listed in the directory, but I think Flayhan's on North Ault St was still in business in 1963.

    3. Thanks. Shirly. I didn't even realize that I had said grocery. I had intended to say restaurant. Reed's corner. That's it. My grandfather owned the building and contents but leased it out. So, he did not own the business itself. And, I did not remember whether or not the restaurant and the gas station were together or not. Evidentally, they were not together. I love having the butcher's block from the restaurant... just because it had belonged to my grandfather, Leslie Hudson. I know that Reed's Corner was owned by Clyde Reed, but I don't know who owned Dorsey's. (Just now remembered. It was Kanatzers) A few blocks South on Morley (Bus. 63) there was a Hudson Service Station. In fact, my husband mentions it every now and then. It was there when he first came to Moberly in 1947 or 48. In the early to mid 40's I lived just one block South of it on the corner of Morley and Chandler Sts. across from the Hosiery Mill. 3. Glad to help, Leslie. As I recall Bob Sauer ran the restaurant and Herschel Thompson ran the station. They were both in the same building separated only by a glass door between them. 3. I didn't retrieve bottle caps, but I definitely collected soda bottles, sometimes close to the end of payday, those bottles helped buy a loaf of bread or a quart of milk. When my Mom could afford it, she would take us girls to the Rexall store on the main drag for a milkshake. I can still feel myself twirling on the stools. BTW, back in 1940, apparently there were no such things as DMV and my Mother bought her first drivers license in the Rexall Storel for a quarter. 3. Karl Rice gave me a tour of the old Sycamore on one of my visits to MO. It initially may have been apartments, but it became a house of ill-repute during the war when the train would stop in Moberly and the military would go to the Sycamore for a little "R & R", if you know what I mean. If you ever have the opportunity to get Karl to show you the place and tell you some stories, don't miss it! Leslie Kohler

    3. Michele, I remember the Ervins and your Aunt Merle, but I cannot remember the Ervins names. My Dad worked at Stamper's Garage and I think Mr. Ervin did, too. Or maybe he drove one of the trucks. It seems to me that Merle's first husband was named Tom who died young and then she married, was it Howard, Stamper? 3. I've printed out all of the messages and will try to answer them all in this message. Keep it up. Shirly
