Thanks for that suggestion--I thought of that one too, and in fact considered that to be the case for a long time, until I really compared the censuses and noticed that the younger children in the 1860 census are in the household in the 1870 census. That was when I decided I had a really confusing situation! I just hope Joshua wasn't running two households at the same time!!
I have marriage records for two separate women, with two different last names. I wish they were the same person! It would sure make things easier.
Diane, I checked Harlan's Transcription of Marriage & Deaths in Randolph Co. Missouri for the years 1854-1879. I couldn't find anything for Mary Sweeney Wright. The only Wright obituaries listed for your above time period were for: Elizabeth Wright d. April 5, 1857; William A. Wright d. October 7, 1856. I would have to assume that Mary died prior to 1853 when Joshua married Lucretia Chism *Marriage Records for Randolph County, Missouri 1829-1859 * *Name*: Jehua Wright *Spouse*: Lucretia Chrissom *Marriage Date*: 14 Jun 1853 I don't know if you've read this article about their son, Zephaniah, but thought I'd transcribe it to you whether you had or hadn't. This comes from "The History of Randolph and Macon Counties, Missouri" ZEPHANIAH WRIGHT (Farmer and Stock-Raiser, Feeder, and Dealer Mr. W. was born January 29, 1937, while his parents, Joshua Wright and Mary Sweney (possible the author omitted an E), were on the road between Illinois and Missouri. They came first from Kentucky in 1836, and only lived in Illinois for one year. On arriving at their destination they settled in Boone County but after a four years' stay, moved to Randolph. Here Zephaniah Wright grew to manhood, and shared the advantages in schooling common to the neighborhood. In 1861, on account of the disturbed state of the country, consequent upon the eruption of the Civil War, Mr. W. with that discretion that is the better part of valor, " Folded his tents like the Arabs, And, silently stole away". Kansas received him into her bosom for the next five years, and in the spring of 1866, he returned to Randolph. He bought one place and lived upon it two years, then sold it and bought land not far distant, where he now resides. He has a farm of 347 acres, all fenced, and in pasture and cultivation. Upon this there is a comfortable house with good out-buildings, etc; also a thrifty young orchard. Mr. W. possesses besides 160 acres of land, all fenced and in meadow pasture, and he owns still another tract of 120 acres, partially improved and containing a small house. He feeds an average 150 heads of cattle yearly, and about the same number of hogs, sometimes shipping, sometimes selling at home to other shippers, and, to a limited extent, buying for shipping purposes. Mr. Wright is of shrewd and perceptive faculties, and with keen sagacity, he he guides his craft safely through the inevitable snags and shoals that too often prove fatal to other voyagers. He showed the same wisdom in selecting a wife as in the conduct of his business affairs when he married March 31, 1861, Miss Elizabeth, daughter of Henderson Sims, formerly of Virginia. Mrs. Wright herself was born and raised in Boone County. There are five children; Lincoln, Joshuah H., Lizzie, William M., and Mary E. Two died at tender ages. If you'd like to find more obit or marriage notices that appeared in Randolph Co. newspapers, e-mail me offline and I'd be happy to help. I've looked every place I could think of to try and find info for you, but just continued coming up empty-handed. Wish I could have been more help. Could you have two men of the name Joshua Wright? Cousins perhaps? My Shelton line repeats constantly that way. Just a thought. Good luck with your research.
Have you considered the wife's name may have been Mary Lucretia or Lucretia Mary? I had a very similar situation looking for what I thought were two wives, Blanche and the initial A. I eventually found confirmation that the wife's name was Audrey Blanche Brunk. Only the one, and I had been chasing two women for quite some time.
Yes, it seems Mary died first as Joshua is with his second wife, Lucretia Chism, in the 1870 census. What is extremely weird is that there is a marriage record for Joshua and Lucretia in Randolph county 1853, but Mary is listed as living with Joshua in the 1860 census. That may be a mistake and the wife in that household may actually be Lucretia, but the age and location of birth is correct for Mary, not Lucretia. Neither wife is buried with Joshua in the Wright cemetery, according to the transcription, but there are other Chisms buried there, and at least two of Joshua's known children, Zephaniah, son of Joshua and Mary, and Cornelia Wright, b. abt. 1854. daughter of J. and L., according to her headstone.
Opps... Sorry, I looked at the dates incorrectly. Mary died first. ~Leslie~ ---- GARY & LESLIE KOHLER <aug67@cox.net> wrote: Hi Diane, Have you already tried searching for any of Mary & Joshua's children, to see if she might have re-married? I really liked the community spirit these last few days helping other searchers break down a brick wall.............I personally enjoyed Jim Bagby's chase. Since the boards have been particularly quiet these past months, now would be a great time to send in your "brick wall" and give all of us some information on who you're looking for with pertinent info. I think it could be great fun, enchance the boards, and liven things up a bit. Whaddya think? Wilma Patterson-Santos Surnames: ASBURY, BAILEY, CABLE, PATTERSON, SIMS, et al............. True, I wouldn't have bothered the list if I wasn't brick walled. I personally thank you for looking. Sherry's post abt Fulton's institution was encouraging, but nothing found on web yet. If I remember right, a reply from Fulton one time, they said I must prove I was an immediate family member, to receive data about anyone that was their And /or get a court order. I found a list of Cemeteries in Fulton. No cemetery name lists. It's possible family members claimed her remains, or she died before 1910 (Why she is not on MO DC list) Mildred daughter Roma Carver, the Moberly School teacher, may have migrated to Denver with the Bilderbecks. I found one sister of Mildred's living near Hale, MO, Carroll CO. I was just their at Hurrican Cemetery taking headstone photos . I should have looked for any Carver headstones. Colorado is like KS & NM. etc, are refusing to release Vital Statistics to researchers. I hope MO doesn't become that paranoid. Jim, Did you check the first name on Roma's DC? It looks like Mildred to me rather than Myrtle. Is that a possibility?
