Something else you need to send with your request for a lookup is a time period. I cant look through 100 yrs of city directories for a certain name, or group of names. Just give me an idea of the time period. Thanks. Cecy
I should have explained. What I have is most early city directories of Moberly. The first was 1875, then 1884/5 then 1894. At 1902 they come about ever 2 to 5 years. I have a very few but not very meny after 1960. Please be patient on replys. That would be great...The first one would be Cherrington, Edward and his wife Ruth or Rosa (not sure who) for the years 1919-1961. trying to locate who he married and when she died...she died before 1961. thanks so much... Kathy, as you know some of those are also my line. Who are parents of Grandville Wisdom Atkins? I have Mary WISDOM but do not know which BURRIS she married. I show Mary's Mother as Ann COLLINS, dau of Joseph Jr. and Susannah LEWIS COLLINS. Would like to link as many as I can. The below was sent to me on the net, and I thought I would share it as I believe that it relates to genealogy. John Wayland ============================= HOW DO YOU LIVE YOUR DASH? I read of a man who stood to speak At the funeral of a friend He referred to the dates on her tombstone >From the beginning...to the end. He noted that first came her date of birth And spoke the following date with tears, But he said what mattered most of all Was the dash between those years. (1934 -1998) For that dash represents all the time That she spent alive on earth... And now only those who loved her Know what that little line is worth. For it matters not, how much we own; The cars...the house...the cash, What matters is how we live and love And how we spend our dash. So think about this long and hard... Are there things you'd like to change? For you never know how much time is left, That can still be rearranged. If we could just slow down enough To consider what's true and real, And always try to understand The way other people feel. And be less quick to anger, And show appreciation more And love the people in our lives Like we've never loved before. If we treat each other with respect, And more often wear a smile.. Remembering that this special dash Might only last a little while. So, when your eulogy's being read With your life's actions to rehash... Would you be proud of the things they say About how you spent your dash? Author Unknown
I read with interest the note from Vaughn Bushman about the Burton families. As I am currently reading the Mercer county, KY tax records on microfilm, the names of May and Ambrose Burton kind of jumped out at me, since both are on the early tax records of Mercer county. They apparently moved there with my ancestors, the Burris and Atkins families from Orange county, VA. My Atkins branch also migrated to the Howard/Randolph county area. Grandville Wisdom Atkins, my 3rd great-grandfather, was named for his maternal grandmother, Mary Wisdom Burris of Orange county, Virginia. My round-about rambling question is this. Is anyone on the list researching the Wisdom family of Orange county, Virginia, as they relate to the above mentioned group? My Mary Wisdom Burris was the daughter of John Wisdom and Anne Collins. John was the son of Francis. Is anyone else out there researching this line? I have precious little on the siblings of Mary Wisdom Burris, and would like to know where they went. Hello Missourians I have been monitoring with interest the Burton discussion going on and find I have a few questions. My line of Wisdoms relate to these Burtons. I discover that there are two branches of Burtons who migrated intoRandolph County in the early days. 1) May Burton branch - He is son of Ambrose Burton and Catey Wisdom, born in Orange, Va., lived in Kentucky, moved to Randolph, had a large family, including May Medley Burton, local Judge. 2) Francis Howard Burton branch -son of Allen Buton, born in Cumberland Va., lived in Caswell NC, moved to Randolph, had a large family, including Samuel Love Burton, local Judge. Both families seem to originate in same area of Virginia, link up with Wisdom family and end up in Randolph Mo. Both families seem to be prominent, i.e. the 2nd family left a branch in NC from which a Governor of the state came. Are there any researchers out there who have connected these two lines? Also I have been wondering if the Rev.James Burton (1821-1909) is a son of James Burton (1793-1863) brother of above May Burton? Thanks for any information you can give. Hi Larry, thanks for your posts. The only one I could possibly match is: > Stock Seized -- Some time last fall, W. S. When the > sheriff seized the stock under attachments by the creditors, it was seen > that the goods would not pay the claims when Mr. Jackson declined to be > considered a partner. Sheriff Ashcom now has the stock in hand and will > offer it at auction on the 17th inst; MDM Saturday 3 Feb 1883 I have 52 Robert Terrill persons in my database. When I looked through them at the ones who would fit the age and location, I found the best liklihood. Robert A. Terrill, b. 23 Sep 1853, d. 9 Jun 1913. This was from your earlier post: "Terrill, Robert -- m. 14 Feb Jennie Jackson at bride's father by Elder S. Y Pitts, all of Rand; MDM Thursday 22 Feb 1877" Jennie was b. 28 Jan 1853, d. 28 Mar 1921. I did not have places for either Robert or Jennie. The fact that she was a Jackson, and a Jackson is mentioned in the above article is further evidence. But, the only child I have for them, Robert Arthur Terrill, was b. 1880, and apparently stayed in Randolph Co. The latter's dtr., had an obit that shows the line did not move to Texas: "Ruth Margaret Barnes, 86 died Jan. 13, at a hospital in Topeka, KS. Mrs. Barnes was born Nov. 27, 1913, the daughter of Robert Arthur and Gertrude Brogan Terrill in Darksville. (Moberly Monitor-Index, Friday Jan. 14, 2000)" The Darksville location matches. Maybe he returned to Randolph Co. after the trip to Texas. I don't have Jennie's parents. Robert's father was Dr. Robert A. Terrill, b. 1 Jul 1823 KY, d. 30 Nov 1902 Randolph Co. There is a large bio on him in "History of Randolph County, MO." And, his mother was Anna S. Hall, b. 10 Dec 1830 VA, d. 6 Mar 1903. John Wayland http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~wayland/

Hi Larry Interesting posts, as usual, and we are all grateful for your work. This one: > Chandler, O. F. -- of Moberly, sold grocery business to F. T. James Dysart, who was the son of James Dysart, b. 1777 Burke Co., NC, d. 1853 Randolph Co. and Martha Cowden, b. 1780 NC. James was the brother of Nicholas Dysart, b. 8 Jan 1804 Lexington, KY, d. 12 Feb 1896 Yates, MO., who m. Euphemia Donnelly Givens, b. 11 Nov 1810 Lincoln Co., KY, d. 7 Dec 1888, Yates. I have 9 children for this latter couple, including Martha Willis Dysart, who m. John Henry Wayland. I also have the Dysart line back several more generations, all on my Wayland page on my site below. I had this note under F.T. Dysart: ====================== Dysart, Finis T. --CSA, MO. Enlisted at the age of 21 & served for 1 year. He was discharged because of failing eye sight. He was born in Macon Co. 1 Mar 1840 & lived in Chariton Co. after the war. He held several county offices. He married 1st Lou Bastin, she died in 1874. One child of that marriage survived, Claude. He then married Mrs. Lou Sands & they had 1 child, Anna. She died in 1881. He came close to winning the nomination for Secretary of State at the Democratic Convention in 1880. Finis started a grocery business in Moberly in 1883. Ref: RCHB84; [father Rev. As stated elsewhere the church property was built by the the first presbyterians, and sold under a deed of trust, when it was bought by W. R. SLAUGHTER and sold it jointly to the Methodist and Cumberland Presbyterians, the latter in 1885 acquiring entire control. Since, the building has undergone a complete transformation, especially the interior now is one of the best furnished churches in the city. Rev. H. D. In the 1870 Randolph Co. MO census, as B.F. Terrill, age 34, along with wife Christina, age 23; children: Mary I. age 7; Eliza M. age 4; and Josephine J. age 6 months. Benjamin is found in the Sugar Creek Townhip, City of Moberly, 1880 Randolph Co., MO census with his widowed mother at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/mo/randolph/census/1880/105-14.gif Christina is not with him, so it is assumed that she was deceased. His children with him are: Ida, age 15; Josephine, age 12; May age 10; Lutie, age 7. Except for perhaps Lutie, the ages on the children on this last census are way off. May is probably the middle name of Eliza M., and she would have been 14. Josephine would have been 10, and Ida age 17. I wonder if the census taker just made guesses on the ages, rather than ask the family. The only other one in the family at this time was Benjamin's brother, Thomas, b. 26 Sep 1855, age 25 (census taker has him as age 20). Eliza A. is shown as the head of the family, "keeping house." This is Elizabeth Ann Crisler, wife of James Terrill, b. 29 Dec 1801 Albemarle Co., VA, d. 14 Sep 1876 Randolph Co. They had her age right on the census at age 66, as she was b. 6 Sep 1813 VA, d. 2 Feb 1905 Randolph Co., MO. Lutie Ann Terrill m. Thomas M. Marks; Eliza Mae Terrill m. Walter Isbell; Josephine Terrill m. George M. Hollis. The "Elder J.R. Terrill" mentioned in the marriage announcement is no doubt the Rev. John Robert Terrill, b. 28 Jul 1827, the uncle of the bride. John was the son of James Terrill, b. 1801, and his first wife, Henrietta Conner, b. 20 Jun 1806, d. 15 Aug 1830, Randolph Co. They are on my Terrill page below. A Big Thank you, to the list and all the help I received. Have found you all very helpful and have found new "cousins". I had one mystery solved only now I have another, can anyone help again?? Sarah WATERFIELD died in Moberly Mo 11 July 1914. She was buried in Union Cemetery at the Union Church in Riggs, Boone Co. MO. Her survivors were her husband John, son Columbus "Lum" WATERFIELD and brother Green Matthews/Mathews of Higginville. I just found out Sarah was m to Solomon W Goodman 1858 and a widow in Randolph Co by 1860. m John W Waterfield 1861-62 per marriage books. The name Mathis/Matthews/Mathews seem to be interchangeable. Columbus married Roberta "Bert" Mathis. The Mathis's intermarried with the Dameron Clan of North Carolina. The only Green I find with a sister, Sarah, was married to Mayo.
