    1. [MORANDOL-L] Patrick Lynch

    3. Death of Patrick Lynch The "Father of Moberly" Departs This Life Wednesday Afternoon Perhaps no man in Moberly was better known than Pat Lynch, who, from the fact of his early settlement in this place, was sometimes called the "Father of Moberly." After A brief illness, he died at his residence near the city, at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 25, 1883. Deceased was born in county Carlow, Ireland, and was, at the time of his death, 63 years old. About the year 1852, he came by express contract to America and took charge of a large farm in Howard county, where he remained six years. About 1858 he purchased a tract of land in Randolph county, to which he removed the same year. In 1860 he was living in old Allen, a station on the North Missouri railroad, one mile north of this city. Moberly had been surveyed and laid out in 1858 by the Chariton & Randolph Railroad company, which proposed to build a road from where Moberly now stands to Brunswick. To make a village and prominent point of Moberly, the proprietors offered, in the spring of 1861, to give the same amount of ground in Moberly to the citizens of Allen that they owned there, if they would remove their houses to this point. Mr. Lynch was the only citizen of Allen who accepted the proposition, and he moved a small one-story frame building, in the summer of 1861, from that point to lots 11 and 12 in block 12 of the plat of Moberly, which lie jus east of the present site of the Merchants' hotel. The war came on with such violence that no other settlers could be induced to take up their abode here, until the fall of 1866. Here, then, for five years Mr. Lynch lived alone, and he often playfully said that he held the city against all intruders throughout the war. At the sale of lots in September, 1866, he bought more ground, which subsequently became very valuable, and resided here until a few years ago, when he moved to a small fram near the northwest corner of the city. He was a man of great physical courage, the native wit and keen retort for which his race is proverbial, infinite humor, strong attachments and unsullied personal integrity. He leaves a wife and three children, besides two step-children, the issue of a forme marriage of Mrs. Lynch. Ex-marshal John a Lynch and Mrs. Frank White reside in this city. Thomas A. Lynch, the other child, lives in Rawlins, Wyoming territory. In consideration of the circumstances of the esteem in which the deceased was held, Mayor Forney issued the following proclamation this morning: MAYOR'S PROCLIMATION By the death of Patrick Lynch, last afternoon, the city of Moberly has lost the first citizen who settled within her corporate limits, and who for several years was the only inhabitant of the place. And, whereas, it is customary to pay especial honor to the pioneers of our western cities and towns, I respectfully request that all business houses be closed from 3:30 to 4:30 this afternoon, in order that every citizen may have opportunity to attend the funeral services at the Catholic church at that hour. D. S. Forney, Mayor 26 Jul, 1883 (copied from the "Moberly Daily Monitor" of Thursday, 26 July 1883.) ================================== Funeral of Patrick Lynch A large congregation of citizens attended the Catholic church yesterday afternoon, at 4 o'clock, to pay the last rites to the remains of Patrick Lynch. The large church was well filled. Rev. Father McKenna officiated and read the funeral services of the Catholic church. The following gentlemen acted as pall bearers: D. S. Forney, C. P. Apgar, James Kennedy, Ed. Lovett, D. A. Coates and Pat Hegarty. When the services were concluded the coffin was removed from the Church to the hearse, and a long line of carriages--forty-five in number--followed the remains to the Catholic cemetery. A large number of pedestrians proceeded to the burial place by a different route. At the grave the usual ceremonies were observed and there was laid to rest the body of the first citizen of Moberly. Green be the grass above him. (copied from the "Moberly Daily Monitor" of Friday, 267July 1883.)

Her maiden name was White, and is a sister of the late J. R. White, of Howard county. She married Yelverton Payton in 1812. Her husband served in the wars of 1812 and 1815, from which she now draws a pension. They moved to Randolph county, Mo., in 1843. They had eight children-six of whom are living yet. The oldest is seventy and the youngest fifty three years old. Mrs. Payton still enjoys good health and can walk very well, and is always busy sewing and knitting. She is very fond of reading. She joined the Old School Baptists in 1817, and is still a member of that church. 3. First I would like to thank Larry Sumpter for all his valuable work and effort he puts into this list,  without him the below imformation would not have been found.   I would also would like to thank Marrion Harlan,   although not on this list, he indexed every death, and marriage listed in every news paper from Randolph Co, from the newspapers on micro filmed at the state archives in Columbia.   His indexes are at the state archives and I believe for sale at the Historical Society in Moberly. These two men and others do a wonderful job trying to peice together valuable records for Randolph Co that many of you already know were distroyed by fires. I welcome all corrections and additions If anyone is linked to this John H. Henderson family of Randolph Co and Orange Co VA please contact me. ========= I finally found the obit of John H. Henderson that married Frances Ann Graves # 1497 of the Capt Thomas Graves line of VA at the Graves family web site ><http://www.gravesfa.org/gen169.htm>http://www.gravesfa.org/gen169.htm It reads as follows..... "...1497. Frances Ann Graves, b. 10 March 1815, m. John Henderson, Jr., 5 Nov. 1832 (Orange Co., Va.). His father was John Henderson. They moved to Missouri. She is also reported to have married Lindsay Brockman...." Frances Ann Graves Henderson is a sister to Jonathan Graves that is also buried at Clifton Hill my direct line. My gleanins of the genelogy info follows,  then census data and the complete obit after that. I believe it is safe to say she didn't marry Lindsay Brockman. BUT notice there are several inconsistencies in ALL THREE sources! John H. Henderson b. April 29, 1814 in Orange Co VA m. (1) November 13, 1832   Frances Ann GRAVES  (# 1497) m.(2)  May 1, 1883, Rachel Whiteside d.  April 14, 1897 in Chariton Co MO buried Clifton Hill,  Randolph Co MO,     (No record of Stone) Frances Ann Graves (#1497) d. (from Larry Sumpter's work) ....In 1865 Dr. (Peter S.) Baker was married to Miss Jennie W. Henderson, of this county. She was a daughter of John H. and Frances A. (Gray) Henderson, both originally of Orange county, Va., who came to Missouri in 1835, locating in Randolph county. The mother died in 1880, and the father is now a resident of Salisbury, in Chariton county. They had a family of seven children: John W., Mary S. F., Sue M., Jennie W., Thelbert G., and one who died in infancy. The father is again married. The Doctor and Mrs. Baker have had four children: Arthur G., Jennie B., Wilfred Lee and Sallie S."..... OBIT of John H. Henderson from the Salisbury MO Press April 16, 1897  as follows.... "Uncle John H. Henderson  of Charition's oldest and most worthy ciizens, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dr.  J. H.. P. Baker, in this city Wednesday evening, April 14th 1897, aged 82 years, 11 months and 15 days, death resulting from the infirmities incident to old age.  Funeral services will be conducted at the Baptist church tomorrrow morning (Friday) by the paster Rev Parker Stockdale, after which burial will take place at the cemetery at Clifton Hill under the auspices of the Masonic lodge of that place, of which he was a member, and assisted by the Salisbury lodge. Uncle John was born in Orange County, Virginia, April 29, 1814.  On the 13th of Novembver ,  1832 he was united in marriage to Miss Frances Ann Graves, of that state,  the result of which union was seven children, six of whom reached maturity and five of whom are now living, viz: Mary E. Lay, Sarah F. Lee, and F. G. Henderson, of Randolph County: Mrs Dr. Baker, of the city, and Susan M. Tooley of Concordia, Kas.  The wife and mother died at her home at Ft. Henry near Clifton Hill, Feb 9th, 1879.  May 1st, four years later Mr Henderson was again united in mariage, this time to Mrs. Rachel Whiteside of this place, who also preceeded him to the great beyond, her death occurring Wednesday, Aug 25th, 1896 Uncle John's residence in Missouri dates from 1837, when he located in Randolph County, were he resided for many years and then came to this city.  A gentleman of enterprise, industry and integrity, he has contributed materially in days past, of his time, means and energy, towards the growth and development of these two counties,  A gentleman of noble impulses, warm hearted and possessed of a sympathetic nature, he enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all his acquaintances. At an early day, deceased made a profession of religion, connecting himself with the Baptist church, and lived and died in the triumphant faith of a christian's hope  A great protion of his time since 1877 has been spent in the reading of the scriptures, and from a little memorandum book found in his family bible, in which we obtained the above information, we learned that since '77 he had read the New Testatment through 202 times and the entire bible more than ten times. To the breaved family and relatives we join with a host of friends in extending our deepest sympathies. Once again,   all additions corrections welcome. Monty Graves mgraves@usmo.com

    1. [MORANDOL-L] BLANKENSHIP, HARPER, BUCKNER, SULLINS
    2. Good Morning! This is my first posting to the site and I am hoping that someone in Missouri will have a connection with my family. I have been researching this line for about 4 years and have hit brick walls. Last night I had it, and subscribed to every single Missouri county, so maybe I will have a breakthrough, or at least help someone else. This may be quite lengthy and if anyone needs clearification if I dont make sense somewhere, please let me know: Calvin Blankenship was born in Tennessee est. 1820-25. I know absolutely nothing about his parents, but in 1850 he was living next door to Wiliam and Pamela Jane Blankenship and their daughter Nancy, who was born in 1850. William was born a year or two after Calvin and he was also born in TN. I have to assume that they are related if not brothers. Calvin first appeared on the Texas County, District # 98 1850 Census with his Wife Delilah who was born in IL, her parents were born in TN, and three children: William P Angeline and James. His son, William was born abt. 1844 in MO so that indicates that they were in Missouri at least by 1844. By 1860, it is now called Boon Township and they have five more children : Nancy, Franklin, John, David, and Martha E. Calvin enlisted into the Confederate Army in 1861 and died in 1864. No military record exsists other than his Muster Roll. Then in 1870 and 1880 Delilah is the head of the household and in 1870 Henry (my gg grandfather) has appeared on the census for the first time. Deliah died between 1880-1883. She and Calvin are buried at Mitchell Cemetery. CALVIN AND DELIAH's CHildren and decendents I have only been about to locate two of Calvin's children on the census other than my gg grandfather: David b. abt 1857 married Margaret Sullins (daughter of Reuben Sullins) on May 6, 1886 in Licking Missouri. They had sic children: Dolts, Mary,Elmer,Alta (married Thomas Richards),Maggie, and lola. Angeline married Logan D. Harper. They had four girls: 1. Nancy Eliza : b. 1866 m. John W. Mitchell on July 23,1883 (Franklin Blankenship consented) in Licking, Missouri. They had 8 kids:William H, Carl L, Winnie M, Alma L, David, Justine, Eddie and Henry. 2. Mary, died young 3. Lucy b. 1870 married a Williams 4. Laura Ellen b. Sept 16, 1873 m. Edward Buckner (son of Thomas and Viney Buckner) had 6 kids: William Franklin b. Feb 10, 1893 m. Bertha Murr Logan James b. April 27, 1895 d. Mar 22, 1988 m. Thimsen Scranko and Mary Cochran Ethel b. July 1897 m. Hebrew Sukkins on Jan 30, 1915 Bryan b. Dec 22, 1899 m. Blanche Hobson Charles Allen b. Dec 22, 1903 m. Nell Hobson, d. April 2,1973 Ava Ruth b. Oct 18, 1905 Henry married Lillie Ellen Smith, daughter of James E. Madison Smith and Margaret Ellen Stricklin. They had 2 sons, Irven who married Rhoda Ormsby and Virgil who married Grace Viola Adkins, daughter of Charles Adkins and Hester Gatewood. I hope I made sense, and more importantly, a connection!

    3. Well listers... Due to the prodding of several folks from a variety of lists... I will do lookups on the final settlement and inventory records for a flat rate of $25. If you want me to copy and return the pages to you, please send a self-addressed stamped legal sized envelope to: Traci Wilson-Kleekamp 4527 E. De Ora Way Long Beach, CA 90815 I have been collecting a number of items on slaveowning families Morgan and Cooper in particular so if I find other things that belong to your line... I'll be sure to let you know. I presently have the entire index for one roll of final settlement and inventories copied... so if I get several requests over the weekend, I should be able to turn them around fairly quickly. Just so you know... and I hope others will do the same... here are some items I have to do lookups... If you are mailing a request... I am happy to check these documents for you. Please list your names and dates specifically. If there is guess work... I won't be able to assist you... it takes too much time to guess. So please give as much information as possible. In order for me to continue understand and look for slaves in the families of Central MO... lookups are an excellent a way for me to learn the family trees and connections. These are some of the resources I have. Due to copyright laws, I can not copy these pages... but I can do look ups and let you know what I find. Thanks to Anne Silar... I now have a probate record for Jacob Chism. He bequeated by gggreat grandmother Mary Ann Howard -- to his daughter Elizabeth Chism --wife of Lot Howard. Much to my chagrin...it appears that Mary Ann's mother and other slaves were to be sold [according to the will and probate] and their worth divided among several family members. Now I need to find a auction notice for slaves sold at the courthouse for the estate of Jacob Chism. I'm wondering who bought the slaves from his estate... family members or other local folks. The slave database is still not up and online yet... and I'm sorry that I can't give you a status report on the progress quite yet. There are two links... make sure to change the links on your site, or bookmark for future reference. I'm still transcribing and putting things online. I'm waaaay behind on some things. But kids are back in school and time is available now in bits and pieces. So much for getting alot done during the summer. http://www.missouri-slave-data.org and http://www.usgennet.org/usa/mo/topic/afro-amer/indexusg.html The second link allows visitors to post wills, probate and other records. You can still contact me at: twilsonklee@earthlink.net I will be posting more wills etc., in the coming weeks to the mirror site..on usgennet. If you have sent me a query to be posted and it doesn't appear, please resend it...I lost my "inbox" a couple of times over the summer. thanks traci wilson kleekamp African Americans in Missouri P.S. If you are working on the transcription of the John R. White ledger... please drop me a line and let me know how you are doing? I hope to start rounding up the transcriptions in December?

    3. Hey Listers, Several months ago I purchased a couple of rolls of microfilm. ... C2006 and C2007. The quality is so-so. But I copied the entire index this morning for just one roll. I didn't get a chance to review the 2nd roll at length... at .25 cents a copy I was getting pretty ticked off at how many copies it took me to make a good copy. Here's list of notes I jotted down from roll 2 ( I just realized that I didn't note which roll is which)... I'll know in another day or so. 1. [MORANDOL-L] Heflin - attention Noah
    2. Sheryl, just curious. Do you Clarks have any connection with Valentine Powers Clark, and/or Valentine Southall Clark of Randolph Co? We may have discussed this before, but I can't recall. 1. Re: [MORANDOL-L] Heflin - attention Noah
    2. Noah, I am researching the HEFLIN name in Randolph Co. I checked my files and do not have anything on James Madison HEFLIN. Try contacting Dr. Morgan HEFLIN at <mheflin@ix.netcom.com> as he might have something on James Madison. Morgan has an extensive file on HELFINs. 1. [MORANDOL-L] Heflin
    2. Noah E. Smothers
    3. I found this record; Confederate Records from the United Daughters of the Confederacy Files Vol. IV; James Madison Heflin, enlisted in 1864 in Springfield Misssouri, "believe with Quantrill". Was a private. Was in several battles. Surrendered at Shreveport in 1865. Note: Was taken prisoner by the Indians with two other companions, their names were Dan Smothers, and George Slagel, the latter being scalped by the Indians and my companion and I was standing not far off and saw the wolves take the scalped man to pieces, it being in wild country. Dan Smothers and George Slagel were brother-inlaws, Dan being a brother of my Great-greatgrandfather, would like to know if there is anyone researching the Heflin surname and might have additional information on James Madison Heflin, Daniel Smothers, and George Slagel. Thanks Noah Smothers

    1. [MORANDOL-L] Looking for Book written by Liberty Noble
    2. Can anyone help this person find the book written by Liberty Noble or a copy, referenced in the History of Randolph County ---- I misunderstood. Thanks Subj: Re: History of Randolph County follow ups so far Date: 10/9/00 1:05:15 PM Eastern Daylight Time From: BandLPaden To: Annerupert Anne: Thanks so much for your help on this. I don't think I explained my request to you very well and I apologize. I am actually looking for the book that Liberty Noble wrote called "Brief Sketches in the Life of Liberty Noble". I read the History of Randolph County and there is an excerpt of Liberty's book in it, but I would like to find the entire book that Liberty wrote. Again, many apologies for not explaining well... Lynn
