I believe the Ben Lessley you're speaking of is buried in the Higbee City Cemetery. I knew him when he patronized the Higbee bank my parents operated, and I played the organ for the funeral of his teenage son who hung himself.....accidentally or otherwise...back in the late '60s, I believe it was.
Kathy - so glad to see the Higbee News. I am always finding something related to one of mine. The excerpt below corresponds with a group photo I have and know that sometimes in the news they will list some of the attendees. I know that you didn't list any, so most likely the "News" didn't do it this time (to my disappointment), but I thought I would ask you anyways. I sure was waiting for them to list a few names. Thursday, 21 June1928, Vol 42. No. 7, Page 3, Col. 5--SOUTH OF TOWN--Some fifty or sixty relatives and friends came with loaded baskets to the hospitable home of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Bradley near Rucker Sunday in honor of Mr. Bradley's birthday anniversary. A sumptuous dinner was served, after which the men and boys played croquet and the ladies engaged themselves in conversation and music. A good time was had by all. In any case, the next entry was a surprise to me and I will have to ask one of my living relatives if she remembers this since she was at this party as a young girl. Thursday, 21 June1928, Vol 42. No. 7, Page 3, Col. 5--SOUTH OF TOWN--Sunday evening after all the guests had departed the home of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Bradley was struck by lightning, it running in on the radio wire, melting the wire and filling the room with smoke so dense one could not see. Aside from giving them all the biggest scare of their lives no damage was done. Grandpa Harris, who resides there, is so feeble he can not get around, but he ran out of the house like a boy when the lightning struck. Plus it opens the question of "Grandpa Harris"??????? The only Harris' I know, in relation to my Bradley's, was an elder (deceased) sister of Emmett married a Robert Harris. I wonder if the father-in-law came to live with his deceased daughter-in-laws' brother??? Doesn't sound right. Once again, so happy that your fingers are doing the reporting again! Valerie
yep, that makes sense to me. Lucy in 1920 is age 17, and the census was taken in January. She wouldn't have turned 18 until August with the 1902 birthday. George Edwin Lessly was my great-grandfather's brother. I have his wife's name as Willa Mae Daggs b. Jan 1876 the daugher of George W. Daggs and Julia E. Smith. The had 10 children in all - George Leroy, Anna Maud, Carrie Nichols, Aubrey, James Carl, Delpha May, Adeline Francis, Orpha Helen, Pauline Wilson and Paul Woodrow. The last two were twins. According to the notes of my grandfather, Stiles Lessly, Adeline (aka "Addie") died in an auto accident at the age of 18. I have her date of death as Dec 15, 1928. No doubt as Kathy Bowlins transcriptions of "The Higbee News" progress, we will get to see a glimpse of her obiturary. I don't know for sure but it would surprise me greatly if she wasn't buried in the Higbee City Cemetery. It's where most of the other Randolph County Lesslys are buried. As for Orpha Helen Lessly, I have that she married one Jack McGee. I know nothing about this Jack or when they married or even if they had any kids. I do have from a cousin that Orpha died 20 Mar 1985. Let me know if you would like to know anything else about either the Lessly or Lessley families. I have quite a lot on them. My records indicate that Addie died in 1928 and is buried at the Higbee Cemetery. She was very ill from Diptheria, so it's possible she died from complications of that. Orpha apparently survived the illness, since she was still on the 1930 census records. Can anyone tell me what happened to Addie and Orphie Lessly? The are both listed in the 1920 Moniteau Twp., Randolph Co., Missouri, census SD2, ED 139, Sheet 1B. They are shown as daughters of George E. and M. May Lessley. On the 1930 Moniteau Twp., Randolph Co., Missouri, census, ED 88-8, SD 6, Sheet 9B, only Orphie is shown. Addie may have married as she would have been about 19. Neither of these children are listed on Larry Sumpter's Randolph County cemetery data base. (see below) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again Kathy. The "Mrs. Bessie Lessly" listed in the article is Bessie Pyle daughter of Granville Hopson Pyle and Rachael Bennett Pierce. She was the third wife of William Augustus "Gus" Lessly whom she married in 1901. Gus died in 1910 leaving her with 4 young children. I knew she had remarried but didn't know too much about it. Carole Brace In a message dated 3/21/2006 1:00:53 AM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Thursday, 21 June1928, Vol 42. No. 7, Page 1, Col. 1--ANOTHER GOOD MAN GONE. S. D. Colly Drops Dead at Home of Physician Where He Had Gone for Treatment.--This community was greatly shocked when word came early Thursday morning of last week that S. D. Colly, better known as "Sandy," of Yates, had died suddenly early that morning, and those who had seen him late Wednesday evening could hardly believe the news. With Mrs. Colly he had attended the funeral of Mrs. W. W. Adams at the Adams home north of town Wednesday afternoon, and seemed to be his usual self. He retired at his usual hour, apparently all right, but awoke about 2 o'clock very sick. Realizing that he was in a dangerous condition he told his wife that he would have to have medical attention, and as he could reach a physician quicker than the latter could reach him, accompanied by Mrs. Colly he got in his car and drove to Roanoke, where he was treated by Dr. Hawkinson. In a short time he was feeling better, and starting back to his car, fell dead before reaching the yard gate. Heart trouble, with which he had been afflicted for a year or more, was given as the probably cause of death. He likely realized that he would go in such a manner, as for several months he would not work alone. He had followed the trade of painter and decorator for many years and was an expert in his line. Deceased was born on February 6, 1871, and had spent most of his life in this community. Many years ago, while working on a church in West Plains, Missouri, he fell from the tower and received injuries which resulted in the amputation of one of his limbs, but which did not seriously handicap him in his work. He was married to Mrs. Bessie Lessly of this place on November 15, 1924, and by whom he is survived. He also leaves five brothers, all of Kansas City, and one sister, Mrs. Vic Bagby, of near Huntsville, besides a wide circle of friends, as he was a favorite with all who knew him. He was a Member of the Methodist church, with which he united here several years ago. Funeral services were held at the Yates Baptist church Saturday by the Rev. E. Y. Keiter of Moberly, in the presence of a large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends, and interment made in Pleasant Grove cemetery, near Yates. In the passing of Sandy Colly the community has lost an upright and honorable citizen, and one who was always ready to do his part in any worthy cause, and his wife a devoted and indulgent husband. To her and the brothers and sister the deepest sympathy of all goes out.
Brack Terrill was the son of Wm. & Susan Bagby Terrill; Wm was the son of James A. & Susan Cave Terrill, etc. I've done quite a bit of work on the Higbee area Magruders for Ron & Martha, children of Ruby Terrill Magruder and will gladly share (not that it is all my original work!)
