Hi all Glad I read this post! I am looking for a woman named Opal Cleopatra Blansett (b1916). She was married to a Burley Rogers (b1904) and may have been in Randolph Co., Arkansas at one time. This marriage is a connection to my father's Moore family from the area. Anyone ever researched the Blansett families? Thanks so much, Bernie Moore-Knowles Papa'aloa, Hawai'i "I have Indian blood in me. I was looking through the online Mo death certificates that was suggested in an earlier email to the group, and ran across a Towles that I don't have in my data base! Would someone tell me how this W.B. Towles fits into the rest of the Towles line. W. B. Towles b. 17 June 1875 in KY to Larkin S. Towles and Mildres A. Gass (may be incorrect spelling hard to read on the certificate!). Married to H. M. Towles - gave info on the certificate. Died 20 Feb 1914 in Randolph Co - no town listed. Buried at Paris, Mo. His occupation was farmer. States both parents were born in KY. Just curious. I am descended from Robert Towles of Huntsville. Sandy Kimble
Cousin Valerie and other Blansett researchers, I am just now attempting to check out some of the information below and have found something that I believe in incorrect. (I am cutting portions of the original email for brevity's sake, but nothing having to do with the Blansett family.) I am pasting an obituary for Mrs. Elvina Blansett, wife of William Blansett. You state that you found William in the 1920 census. I believe that must be a different William as his wife's obituary states that he died 12 June 1883. "The Higbee News" 19 Feb 1904 MRS. ELVINA BLANSET DEAD Mrs. Elvina Blanset, of Howard county, died very suddenly at the home of B.F. Cook, five miles south of Higbee, at one o'clock Saturday morning, Feb 13, 1904. Funeral services were held by Rev. Notley Magruder, a large crowd being present to pay the last tribute of respect to the deceased. Burial was at Old Log Chapel cemetery. Mrs. Blanset was born in North Carolina October 17, 1824, being nearly 80 years of age at the time of her death. She was married to Wm. Blanset in 1840. To their union nine children were born, six of whom survive viz: John B. Blanset, of Macon, MO; Mrs. Martha A. Robb, of near Higbee; Mrs. E. Cook, of Howard county; G.W. and Moses J. Blanset, of Higbee, and Mrs. Mary Kimball, of Glenwood, Mo. Besides these she leaves one sister, twenty-eight grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren. Deceased had been a member of the Baptist church since 1857 and proved a faithful and consistent member. Her husband, Wm. Blanset, died June 12, 1883. Six years ago Mrs. Blanset moved to her daughter's Mrs. B.F. Cook, where she made her home until her death. Happy Hunting, Cecil V. I am not sure. She sent me one letter in about 1975. She was born Lulu Mae Marshall, ca Nov 1927, daughter of Lulu Belle Hopper and Dwight Marshall. Lulu Belle was 10th (known) child of Joseph Thomas Hopper and Cora Belle Cline. But she lived in Ponca City (on the 1930 census) OK. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, May 24, 2006 5:24 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MoRandolph] Re: Hopper - Cline Carolyn - Was this Lulu Mae Keathly the editer of The Ponca Ciy News, Ponca City, OK? Carolyn - Was this Lulu Mae Keathly the editer of The Ponca Ciy News, Ponca City, OK? Howard
I found Moses Bass Jr. in the 1850 Chariton Township, Schuyler Co. Census. He has a wife named Lydia and five children. I noticed on the 1880 Census that there's a David Bass in the household listed as a nephew. RJ
I agree with you after following the census. He continually stated he was born in Arkansas. I have Elvira Mobley (Bass/Hopper)in 1860 - 1900 census (in Nebraska) and Moses in 1860 (I think) through 1900. I don't find either in 1910 (but could have missed them) Elvira had 12 children, 10 living, but I can only find 10 of them. It seems she married Moses Bass about 1870. I also have Joseph Thomas Hopper in the census from 1870 through 1930. Except cannot find him in 1880. If anyone is interested. I think it was Boone Co. AR for several reasons: Boone Co.AR is on the border with MO, Joseph Jr.was b. in Boone co. AR, Joseph Sr. was in the 14 th Arkansas Reg. Howard Fitzpatrick
According to both the 1850 and the 1860 census Joseph Sr. was born in Kentucky about 1827-1828. Three Hoppers came to Missouri from Madison Co., Kentucky. My Joseph who settled in Howard and John and James who settled in Boone. All three are suspected of being sons of Moses Hopper. Unfortunately by the time of the 1850 Census my Joseph Hopper was 72 and the information on his children is scant. What I can say is that Anna (Green) Hopper is buried in the Macedonia Christian Church Cemetery in Audrain as is Asa Bartee the son of William Bartee and Frances Hopper. William and Frances had a son named Joseph Thomas Bartee. It's no coincidence I think that Joseph Hopper (Sr.) is in their household in 1850 or that he named his first child, a daughter, Francis. Joseph Sr. supposedly served in the 14th Arkansas from from July 1861 to February 1862 following which he returned to Missouri. The 14th Arkansas surrendered 9 July 1863 at Port Hudson following the fall of Vicksburg and ceased to exist. The Provost Marshall's papers have yielded three Taney County entries relating to Joseph Hopper Sr. "Statement that Joseph Hopper was in Capt. Bray's company of guerrillas when Mr. Fisher was murdered, and is also a member of Capt. Casebolt's guerrillas. "Statement that Joseph Hopper took him (Mecager Duggin) and Unionist William Brown prisoner and threatened to kill both of them and John Morris, and stole property from Morris and Archibald Tabor. "Hopper, Joseph T. Taney Co., Lawrence's Mill Statement that he was a guerrilla in Taney County and stole some stock belonging to Thomas Morris and John Morris, was also a member of Co. C, 14th Arkansas Regiment under Capt. Hutson. There was in fact a Captain A. L. Hudson in Company C, 14th Arkansas. Finally we have ... Burials at Smallpox Island (near the Alton, Illinois Military Prison) PVT. J. T. HOPPER SEPT. 20, 1863 C CO. 14TH ARKANSAS There may be additional documents in the National Archives since he was a prisoner. It's quite possible of course that he had moved his family to Arkansas sometime after 1860 and might have left them there in relative safety when he returned to Taney Co. RJ
Just one question - I have been following this family (Joseph Hopper Sr & Jr, Elvira Mobley md Hopper, md Bass) through the census tonight, and I do not yet (1900) have them in Arkansas. Could it possibly be that Joseph was born in Boone Co in another state? I have info that Cora Belle Cline was born in Boone Co IA and we all know about Boone Co MO. Carolyn
Just a teeny bit more; went searching through the census; found Elvira with her new husband. It looks as if he were married before, also. They were all listed as Bass in Nemaha Precinct, Nemaha County, Nebraska 11 Aug 1870; Household 39/Family 39 Bass, Moses, 42, farmer, ---/$300, NC Elvira, 34, f, Keeping House, MO James, 14, At Home, MO, at school David, 12, At Home, MO, 15 school William, 8, At Home, MO Joseph, 7, At Home, MO Assuming we are all correct about Joseph's birthdate (and looks like from the death of Joseph Sr), Moses must have had David before; William is anyone's guess. And I guess Frances was married by then. Carolyn
What little information on Joseph Hopper I have is from a Lulu Mae Keathly with whom I was in contact in the 70s. She was the great granddaughter of Joseph. Per her information: Joseph Hopper was a French-Canadian who moved to Boone Co AR about 1861 and died there in late 1862 (I saw a message that updates that) from the war. The bride index for Howard Co MO marriages gives that he married Elvira Mobley (I have more on her and antecedents) 2 Oct 1850; the groom index says 7 Oct 1850. They had a daughter Frances (older) and a son Joseph Thomas Hopper born Jul 1863. Elvira married someone surnamed Bass after 1863. Son Joseph Thomas Hopper left home age 9 because of his stepfather. He married Cora Belle Cline 5 Jan 1886 and died 15 Feb 1965. Again more on the descendants. I have not been able to date to find Joseph Hopper on the census, so he may have mobbed to AR before the above date. To correct slightly, Elvira's father was John H not A Mobley/Moberly (apparently the family early on often used it interchangeably) and Ann Enyart. John H was born 25 Nov 1797 KY son of Samuel Moberly and Ann Tudor and died 2 Oct 1867 Howard Co MO, buried in the New Hope Cemetery. Ann Enyart was born 10 Jun 1806 KY, died 28 Aug 1864 Howard Co. Children as I have it: Enyart b 24 Apr 1824, died 14 Jun 1886 Howard Co; md Martha Burnam 29 Oct 1846 Howard Co; 14 children Rachel b ca 1825, md John Perkins ca 1842, later married his brother Joel T Perkins; 10 children altogether but not sure which are whose Elizabeth Enyart my direct line, born 3 Jan 1828 Howard Co, died 8 May 1895 Howard Co, md 8 Jun 1842 James Dougherty; 12 children Permilia b 13 Aug 1831 MO, also my direct, died 9 Jun 1899 Howard Co, md 3 May 1846 George Washington Dougherty, brother of above James; 13 children. John Quincy b 22 Apr 1833 MO, died 14 Mar 1903 Howard Co, md Mary Elizabeth Reed 24 Feb 1854; 13 children Elvira b 1839 Howard Co, md 2 or 7 Oct 1850 Howard Co Joseph Hopper, md sometime, someplace, somebody Bass; 2 known children Squire b ca 1840 MO; MAY be the Squire Mobley who married Narcissa Todd 26 Jul 1864, but don't know. No further info on him. And of course got lots more on these families. The Enyarts came from KY, before that Surry/Rowan Co NC, before that Staten Island NY; the immigrant ancestor was Carel Enjoert b ca 1626 Flanders and came here - well, I have that info somewhere, but I think it was 1664; seems to me they were the last ones to arrive before NY became English; I have two very different Dutch lines (oddly enough, both members of the same church in Staten Island in the 1600s) and forget which one that was. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, May 22, 2006 9:47 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MoRandolph] Re: Hopper - Cline According to my Family Records, Joseph HOPPER Sr. came from Canada to AR.
