    3. >The name of Pleasant was the first name of my husbands great >grandfather and his grandfather's name was Walter Pleasant McCann. >They came from Ky and settled in Paris Missouri. > >If you see the name let me know. > >Thanks Judy McCann > Actually, the name Pleasant goes back even farther than that. A Thomas Bybee, supposedly a French Huguenot, came to VA in the summer of 1700 with his family. He had a son, John Bybee, Sr., b. abt 1670; d. 1729 in Goochland Co., VA. His son, John Bybee, Jr. m. Elizabeth McCann in 1763, dau. of Neely McCann. John Jr. had a brother, Pleasant Bybee, b. 1758; d.16 Jul. 1835; m. 3 sep. 1789. Mildred Priddy. He enlisted in Capt. Kendall's 9th VA Regiment in 1778 in Fluvanna Co., VA and received a pension dated 27 May 1818 (#18687). The DAR will give you lots of additional info. After his death, on 23 Nov. 1840, Mildred, applied for a widow's pension from Clark Co., KY. She stated that she was 81 and a widow of Pleasant Bybee. You can find Pleasant Bybee (Bibee) in 1810 census of Fluvanna Co., VA and then other Pleasant's in KY, TN, and MO. The given name was used over and over by his descendants. Clark Blake --

No. 11, Page 7, Col. 3--EAST OF TOWN--Sunday was a most pleasant day at the home of Israel Lewis and son, Wilburn, it being Mr. Lewis' 82nd birthday. Children and grandchildren gathered with well filled baskets with everything good to eat and dinner was served on the lawn. Those present: Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Thompson and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Dobson, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur True, Mr. and Mrs. James Hamilton, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Fuller and son all of Moberly, and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Lewis and children, Mr. and Mrs. Rixie White and children of Clark, and Mr. and Mrs. Ira Lewis and family. All left at a late hour, wishing their father many more happy birthdays. Forgot to comment on this one. The "Israel Lewis" named in the article is actually "Ezra" Lewis although I believe he was sometimes referred to as Isra or Israel. He is the son of Nathaniel G. Lewis and Manerva McClain - born 12 Jul 1845 in Randolph Co., MO. His wife was Elizabeth Bradley b. 9 Jan 1857 daughter of Thomas Smith Bradley. Elizabeth's brothers Thomas Minter Bradley and William Wright Bradley married Ezra Lewis' cousins - Sarah Elizabeth Lewis and Amanda Jane Lewis. Carole

    2. Cecil - In my notes I have that Elizabeth was born 25 Aug 1897 and that she was a schoolteacher. Also she married George Leroy "Roy" Lessly on 22 May 1922. So that fits with the census info you found. Thanks Carole In a message dated 6/1/2006 4:52:47 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: Carole, I show Roy Lessly as George Leroy "Roy" Lessly. I have found an Elizabeth A. Elizabeth is shown as a grade school teacher. This family is also on the 1910 census, same area. Harry S. Ratherford is on the 1930 census, same area, and shown as a widower. I do not know if this is the correct family, but everything I have found fits very well. Please let me know if you find information that proves, or disproves, my theory. Good luck, Cecil V. Boyd

    3. As I recall from my readings on VA families, there was a family of that name very prominent in the state early on. I have just checked a l905 history of Culpepper/Orange Co's and found the name twice there.

    2. Would anyone know why the name Pleasant pops up in various family lines in Missouri? Is it a surname or just an attribute that is awarded to some via their name? Thank you for your thoughts. Frances

I am not connected to your family in any way that I know of, though my Dougherty and St. Clair ancestors are connected to many of the common surnames in Howard, Boone and Randolph Counties. 3. I have found a William Henry Ratherford that I believe to be, the brother of Harry Ratherford, but I can not prove it. William Henry Ratherford was born 9 October 1876, and was living in Gorin, Scotland Co., Missouri, on 12 Sept. 1918. His wife was Mary Maud Ratherford. (per the WW 1 draft registration) I have found William H. and Mary M. Ratherford, with daughter Ernestine, and Mary T. Smith, mother-in-law, in the 1910 Harrison Twp., Scotland Co., Missouri census. I have found William, Mary and Ernestine in the same area on the 1920 census. I have found William H., Mary M., and Ernestine in the same area on the 1930 census. Both Harry and William state that their father was born in Tennessee and their mother was born in Missouri. I just found Harry with Nora (Lanora), Lizzie (Elizabeth) and Lanora (Doris L.) Ratherford on the 1900 Harrison Twp., Scotland Co., Missouri census. The next family down is Leige (born Oct 1836, in TN), Liza (wife, born Sept. 1840, in MO), Lizza (daughter, born Jan 1871, in MO) and Will (son, born Oct. 1876, in MO). I believe this is Harry's family, still no proof, but it fits very well. I found Rosalie N. Ratherford (age 27) on the Harrison Twp., Scotland Co., Missouri, 1930 census. Living with her is Doris Conley, sister, age 30. So Kathy it does appear as though the Mrs. Doris Radford is an error in both her marital status and her last name. Enough for now, Ms. Cecil V. 3. It's fits even better than you thought, Cecil. Since the family has two other children listed, a daughter Doris and a second daughter, Rosalie, and the census was for the town of Gorin. Combine those facts with a couple of previous articles, and I think you have a match. From "the Higbee News" Friday, 8 Dec 1922, Vol 36, No 34--Miss Doris Rutherford returned to her home in Gorin, Sunday, after a visit with her sister, Mrs. Roy Lessly. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From "The Higbee News" Thursday, 1 July 1926, Vol 40 No. 9, pg. 5, Col 2--LOCAL AND PERSONAL MENTION--Mrs. Doris Radford of Memphis, a the guest of her sister, Mrs. Roy Lessly. 3. Carole, I show Roy Lessly as George Leroy "Roy" Lessly. I have found an Elizabeth A. Ratherford, born about 1899, daughter of Harry S. (born about 1863 in Missouri) and Elanore C. (born about 1874 in Missouri) Ratherford on the 1920 Scotland Co., Harrison Twp., Missouri, Census. 1. Bain, Elliott, Robb, Wimmer, Whitmire
    2. Richard Johnson
    3. Charles Elliott born 1887 and Millie M. Robb born 1893 appear in the household of William Bain and his wife 'Pheba' in 1900 (Higbee). The two youngsters are listed as grandchildren. Since William Y. Bain died in 1912 without any immediate relatives I have to assume the grandchildren were Phoebe's. The census shows that she had six children but only two were alive in 1900. Phoebe Bain apparently died about 1903. Does anyone know who the parents of Charles and Millie were? I have been trying to determine if Phoebe was indeed the aunt of Alzona Wimmer who married Judson 'Bud' Shafer the brother of my great grandfather. Alzona was born in 1875 in Chariton Co. and appears in the household of William and 'Phebee' Bain in 1880 (Howard Co.) listed as a niece. According to Alzona's death certificate her mother was Almeda Whitmire and according to the obituary (1915) her mother and a sister were still alive but no names are given. RJ

    3. Mary Ruth Davis was my 3rd cousin. Our ancestors in common were Stephen H. Brockman and Margaret Kimbrough who were married on 19 Jan 1836 in Randolph Co. Mary Ruth Davis' brother James Carlton Davis was born 26 Sept 1918 and died 13 Jul 1969. --- [email protected] wrote: > Higbee News > > Thursday, 26 July1928, Vol 42.
