This first column, recognizes Jose Cisneros who recently received a National Humanities Medal from President Bush. Mr. Cisneros of El Paso is being honored for his multiple contribution to the field of fine arts and historical southwest art. In the months ahead the surname column will be written about either the surname of a national figure with that surname, OR a successful researcher who has traced family roots back into the colonial period. I would like to include visuals with each of the surnames article. Many of us are beginning to organize family data. In this issue John Schmal (our historian) has collaborated with Donna Morales on "The Dominguez Family of Kansas City: An American Experience," to tell the unique story of one Mexican-American family. In addition, Jennifer Vo and John Schmal have collaborated to tell the story of a ten-generation California family, starting with the soldier, Juan Matias Olivas. You'll find that in both writings, the families stories are told within the framework of the historical time period, enriching the readers' historical understanding. We continue to attract interest and support from Mexican researchers. You'll find under Mexico, a listing of researchers willing to give assistance, new book information and also the very interesting article, Las Haciendas, by Lic. Jose Alfredo Villegas Galvan, the Director of the Archivo Historico Del Estado San Luis Potosi. In addition to giving the location and founder(s), other kinds of nformation is given, such as how the land was used, and recent ownership. The lead article concerns the efforts of the Daughters and Sons of the Revolution to expand awareness of the Spanish contributions to the American Revolution and our history of involvement in that effort. Remember to click on all those websites gathered by Johanna de Soto. They are treasures. . . open them up and enjoy.
