    3. 21 Aug 1884, Obit Mrs. Susan HOWARD, wife of Eli Howard, died Sunday morning, August 17th, 1884, at the residence of S.D. SHATTUCK, in St. John, Putnam Co. Mo. She was born in Piqua Co. Ohio, Sept 30th, 1818. In early life she with her father moved to Indiana. She married Eli Howard in 1837 and in 1850 they came to PutnamCo. Mo. Her maiden name was Susan WATT. On the 10th of April 1853, her husband started for the gold fields of California, where he expected to make a fortune, but likely failed for he has never returned. He wrote to her occasionally til June 1865, since which time, nothing is known of him. She was left in very poor circumstances and has battled ever since for the comforts of life. She was a marvel of energy and management and raised her five boys and one girl in the best of society, giving all of them a fair education. She was buried in the St. John Cemetery on Monday, by a large and mourning assemblage of relatives and friends.
