Shepherd of this township died at his home in Syracuse, Neb., Aug. 34d. We have received an e xtended obituary notice of his death but owing to the crowded condition of our columns cannot publish it. Local, 4 Sep 1884 On Thursday afternoon while helping to switch at Sumner, John CARTER of Mendota, Mo., a brakeman on the C.B. & K.C. fell, the wheels passed over his right arm, crushing it to a pulp, also passing over his right leg and breaking it in 3 places. Dr. LANE, was at Hale at the time. An engine went for him immediately, but not having his amputating instruments, Mr. Carter was brought here. Surgical skill could not save him. He leaves a wife and two children. He was about 30 years of age. South Prairie, 4 Sep 1884 An infant child of R.W. BLACK, died on Wednesday evening last. St. John 4 Sep 1884 One of Charles KELLEY'S children died on the 26th of August.
