30 Sep 1891, Obituary ***This obituary is well over half a page of a newspaper page, taken from a Unionville, MO newspaper. Since it is so long..I'm going to take the genealogical data from it to post...so its not going to be as written. The death of William H. WATTS, occurred on September 24th from cholera morbus. He was born in Edgar county, Indiana 30 Sep 1837 and married at Columbus City, Iowa, Sept 24, 1861. He died on the 30th anniversary of his marriage. He leaves a wife, Anna, who is a sister of Dr. E. J. GEISINGER, Mrs. D.W. WILLIAMS, and Mrs. J.B. FREED of this city and two sisters, Mrs. Mary OSBORN of Cincinnati, Iowa and Mrs. Lizzie GRIFFITH, of Irving Kansas, and four brothers residing in other states. Mr. Watts had no children, but Miss Flora Watts (daughter of a brother) has lived in his home since she was six years old receiving the same loving care as if she was a child of his home. In the fall of 1867, Mr. Watts settled in Putnam county and established a nursery, which ultimately became a fruit farm of twenty acres. The funeral was conducted by the Elder E.M. SMITH who took his position in the open air at the door of the house. As the hour approached for the funeral services, long line of people on foot and in vehicles proceeded towards the modest home about one half mile west of town. Church pews placed upon the lawn in front of the house supplied sitting accomodations for a large assemblage, but many were forced to stand. The friends were invited to pass through the house, and take the last look at the face of the dead, and then the casket on which rested a cross and crown composed of the tube roses, and while dahlias was born to the hears by the following pall bearers, who were dressed in black, wore white gloves, and a mourning upon the left arm: S.B. WALTON, C.W. WHITMORE, E.O. LEMELY, J.M. COMSTOCK, W.E. SYMMONS, and J.D. JOHNSON. Fifty four carriages made up the procession in the rear of the hearse to Unionville cemetery and many followed on foot to be present at the rites attending the commital of the remains to the grave.
23 Sep 1891 Reuben BEARY, was born in Lehigh county, Penn., Oct 19, 1810 and departed this life Sept 15, 1891. In the dark days of the rebellion he was a thoroughly loyal man and sent the son who was old enough to defeat the union. He leaves an aged wife, five daughters and two sons to mourn his loss. His remains were interred in the St. John Cemetery. *** There is a good sized bio on this family in the "History of Putnam County."
Deaths as reported in a Unionville, MO newspaper. 16 Sep 1891, Local J.W. and A.W. JONES have received the particulars of their brother's death which proves to have been accidental instead of suicidal. It appears that Geo. W. was out with a party of hunters, near St. Louis, Montana, and in alighting from a wagon, a gun was accidentally discharged killing the unfortunate man instantly. 16 Sep 1891, Local Miss Bertie STURGEON, who resided near Wyreka, died September 8th. The young lady was in attendance at the Teachers Institute a short time ago, was taken ill and carried home lingering until the time mentioned. She was a school teacher of marked ability and was the main support of her widowed mother and a deaf and dumb brother. By industry and economy, Miss Sturgeon had accumulated considerable property, and the close of her life found her the center of a large circle of friends whose sentiments toward her are best expressed tin the quotation: "None knew her but to love her, none named her but to praise."
These are deaths as reported in a Unionville newspaper. Date of issue and locale when given will be on top line with death information following. good Luck all, Linda 9 Sep 1891, Locals Arch HOLIDAY buried his youngest child Sunday in Hartford cemetery. 9/16 issue, Died near Hartford Aug. 29th, little Freddie HOLIDAY. He suffered ten days with that terrible malady, flux when death released him from his pain. A father, mother, two brothers and a sister mourn his untimely death. 9 Sep 1891 Word was received in this city last week that Geo. W. JONES, brother of J.W. and A.J. Jones of this city, had committed sucide at St. Louis, Montana, by shooting himsef. Mr. Jones visited his relatives here last winter and seemed in good spirits and has been successful in his business relations. No reason can be assigned for the rash act, his relatives are without particulars.

Hi everyone; Been awhile since I wrote about the archives so thought I would for the newer members. We have an archives of all our old messages. I have sent out many records with the subject line being death records, and then I sent them out by death record and year/month and year. Go to this site: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Once there type in MOPUTNAM-L for the list to search and the next box that will come up will say query. YOu can search many ways. You can search by Surname, or by subject etc. Once it comes up click the message of the body and walla...you have the old archived message. Click both years 1999 and 2000 to find your tidbit. I started the list in early spring of 1999. Good luck all, Linda

Hi Everyone; From time to time people email me asking me about newspapers, in Putnam County. Since I've gotten 2 such requests so far this week I thought I'd try to explain what little I do know about the newspapers. The oldest newspaper was the Unionville Weekly Argus which was first started in 1860 and discontinued in 1938. I've not seen a copy of one though in my research in Putnam County. The Unionville Republican which is still in existence and the only one was founded by W.T. O'Bryant. I think it began around 1865 and it is on microfilm from 1870's to -- at the Unionville Public Library in Unionville, MO. Another newspaper was the Putnam County Journal which was started in 1889 by Charles DeForest Parks and discontinued in 1916. THe Investigator newspaper was around about 1886 and there was the Putnam County Leader, which was also in existence about 1895. In April of 1926 three newspapers were consolidated into what is today The Unionville Republican. When I send in the death records, they are from clippings taken from newspapers. I have always thought the Unionville Republican printed them but since there is no actual paper or name of paper I've not wanted to say. Next time I get down to the library I'll be more inquistive about the newspaper records for you all. Linda list manager of The Putnam County Mailing List

Good Luck, Linda 17 Jun 1891, Locals Capt. James TURNER receieved a telegram Saturday stating that his mother, Mrs. Ann WILLETTS TURNER, was lying at the point of death at her home in Burlington, Iowa. She died before Capt. Turner arrived on the train. Mrs. Turner was the mother of twelve children, six of whom have gone before her. George TERRELL, of the east end of the county was in the city Friday, and reported that Willie BOLANDER, a boy about 17, son of Henry bolander, of Grant township accidentally shot and killed himself on Thursday. He had been out hunting with a rifle and just as he stepped in the door on his return the gun discharged his contents, the ball entering his temple and killing him almost instantly. 17 Jun 1891 P.C. JARMIN died at the residence of his daughter Mrs. Adolphus GUFFEY in Richland township, last night. The remains will be brought to the city cemetery after funeral services this afternoon. Mrs. BUSTER, wife of Frank Buster, of Richland township died last week.
This is my line. David and Malinda were the brother and sister of my great great grandparents William and Charlotte Branscomb Vestal. I don't know a whole lot about their children.
