M. Phillips ran away Tuesday afternoon and as a result two persons are dead and another lies at the point of death. The victims are Mrs. Charles Irwin and Freeda Phillips, the fourteen year old daughter of Mrs. Phillips. Mrs. Phillips, though seriously injured, is expected to live. The sad affair occurred about five o'clock in the afternoon. The three occupants of the buggy were returning home from the Crossroads store, which is conducted by Mrs. Phillips son-in-law, Albert Hanna. Mesdames Phillips and Irwin had gone there to do some shopping and Freeda, who had been staying with her sister, was returning home with her mother. When about half way home the bridle of one of the horses broke and the team became unmanageable and ran away. Mrs. Irwin and Freeda jumped from the rig and sustained fatal injuries, dying soon after being taken to the Phillips home. Mrs. Phillips remained in the buggy until it was overturned. She sustained a severe wound in the head and other injuries. Funeral services for Mrs. Irwin and Freeda Phillips were held today. The Phillips and Irwin families live in the same neighborhood, about seven miles north of Crocker. Published in The Crocker News, Pulaski County, Missouri on Thursday, November 23, 1916.
