Although taken completely by surprise, Mrs. Walters received her guests with great cordiality and everybody soon felt very much at home. About 1:00 o’clock, dinner was announced—and such a dinner your correspondent might write pages trying to describe the dinner and then he would be compelled to say with the Queen of Sheba, “The half was never yet been told.” But that dinner did show how Mrs. Walters had trained her daughters and some other mother had trained Mrs. Walter daughters-in-law in the art of cooking, for the dinner was gotten up by Mrs. Walter children aided by a few neighbors. After dinner Brother Dill made a brief address and closed with a prayer. At 3:30 the crowd began to disperse, wishing Mrs. Walters many happy returns. Besides the family, those present were: Rosa Peterson, husband and five children; Mr. And Mrs. Fletcher Walters and child; Mr. And Mrs. Oscar Walters and child Maggie Duncan and child; Mrs. Mateely Trent and child; Uncle John Carmack, and Aunt Thirza; Aunt Polly Brown; John and Clyde Peterson of Webster Grove, Mo., Uncle Peter Peterson; Mr. And Mrs. Rene DeMoslin ( or DeMoelin?) and four children; Miss Myrtle Bennett; Mr., and Mrs. Wm. Allen of Miller county and Brother Dill. Published in The Crocker News, Pulaski County, Missouri on Thursday, January 21, 1915.

Green was born May 27, 1843 in Illinois, and passed away at his home in Bloodland, Mo. He came to Missouri with his parents at an early age. He endured the pioneer hardships and saw the country grow into a garden spot. He was united in marriage, August 2nd, 1870 to Susan Gillis and after nearly one half century of married life he met death peacefully and quietly. He united with the Methodist church in 1879. During his illness, the pastor of the Bloodland church visited him and, Uncle Johnny, as he was affectionately called, seemed to enjoy the time, and frequently expressed himself as being ready to depart, and be with the Lord. He said that he has not found any marker with James's name on it. That doesn't mean he isn't buried there as there are lots of just field stones with nothing written on them that are marking graves. He said that there was a skirmish at McCortney mill and Alexander McCortney was killed by Union soldiers, and that his marker is curiously missing also. However, markers were hard to come by doing the civil war and field stones were used. I am sending an affidavit to your e-mail address about the McCortney family that you might find interesting. Also, even though they have found many more graves than what is listed in the headstone inscription book for McCortney cemetery, most are just unmarked field stones. There is no published list. If there are any other names you want me to check on, let me know and I will see what I can come up with. Sorry we couldn't be more help, Mary

Maybe you can help me. Can you tell me where you got the info. on John Foster? It seems there is many more graves now unearthed than the original 14. I have been following a site that reports the renovation of the cemetery by some school kids there in Waynesville. Last that they wrote they had found more than 50 graves. But their diary ended without listing the names on the headstones that they unearthed. If you go to the following link, it gives timelines and lots of pictures of the renovation. http://www.fidnet.com/~bigpiney/Cemetery/Timeline.html Diaries said that the kids were recording the names of the buried, but did not give a list. Is there a librairy near you where they could tell you what school did this work and where to get copy of list? My GGGrandfather married into the McCortney family. He was James M. Wilson. There were alot of Wilson's living in Big Piney with the McCortneys. I haven't been able to find his burial site anywhere, and feel sure that this is where I will finally find him. He was killed by a bushwacker sometime between 1861 and 1866. Any clues that you can give me pertaining to this graveyard would be immenesly appreciated! ==== MOPULASK Mailing List ==== Pulaski Co Group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MOPulaski/ This is a place where you can upload files, photos, etc. Messages will be shared with the Group. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Hello Rea: We do have some surnames in common. some of our ancestors were killed by bushwhackers. Also I have lots of family associated with Big Piney. In fact I was born there in 1941 and so were many other relatives. Some of my family has married into the Sanders, Long, Page/Sneed, McDonald and other families. I do have more information on Lydia Jane Page and her family, as well as some of the Sneeds. Unless my memory fails me, my family lived on the Old McDonald Farm, just across the Big Piney River from what used to be Big Piney. I remember crossing the ford with a horse and wagon at the McDonald Farm on the Big Piney River. It was a short cut to Big Piney, rather than go back up the 3/4 mile dirt and gravel road to then cross the old iron girder and wooden bridge to Big Piney. Can you tell me more about Karen Carroll, one of your school bus drivers? I will send some of those connections if you are interested. Also, I can ask my mom if she was aware of a graveyard on the Old McDonald Farm. Yours truly, Wayne
