    3. I am very interested. Thank you. I worked on the History all weekend and trying to fit the Swede puzzle together. I will be going down to Swedeborg at the end of the month. I will gladly accept all contributions. Please note your connection so I can give you credit in my book. Thanks for taking the time to answer and copy the information. Pass the word around what I am doing so I can include as many families as possible. 3. Since you have chosen to make your "statement" to the list, then I am forced to respond to the list. As the ListAdministrator it is my responsibility to set up rules for the list. When you join you receive a welcome letter with these rules. The message you posted has nothing to do with the sharing of your family history. While the information you forwarded IS important to many who do not research sites before "blindly" joining, it IS available in a myriad of places, including the Rootsweb Review which is received by anyone who is a member of a Rootsweb list, it is NOT necessary to post it to each individual list. There is no reason to use precious resources to repeat the same information over and over. While I respect the fact that you are entitled to your opinion. It should have been expressed off the list, as it states in your welcome letter. I have received many complaints about your original post but only one complaint because I asked that the discussion not continue from the list - you. ATTENTION: this discussion WILL NOT CONTINUE on this list. There are other venues available to continue this discussion including privately. Any further posts will be considered a violation of list rules and members will be put in "moderate" mode so that I can view their posts before forwarding them on to the list. This list runs so smoothly that it saddens me when people can follow a few simple rules. 1. [MOPULASK] Critique of genealogy websites
    2. Shirley, The letter I sent to the list was Genealogy related, and yes it was a warning so that this "family discovery.com" will not get another person to pay for something that can be found FREE on line. I feel that your doing a disservice to this list by asking us not to critique genealogy websites. I for one appreciated being warned about a scam, or being told about a great website. We are all here for the same purpose to share information on genealogy. Even Rootsweb.com has added the following information to their news letter that is distributed to those that are on the list. Thank you Debbie Walters "HANCE, BILYEU, ALEXANDER, ALLISON, ORR, CHOAT AND ANDERSON" RootsWeb's Genealogy News, Vol. 4, No. 11, 14 March BARKING UP THE WRONG TREE. Many readers have expressed concern and outrage about a company known as FamilyDiscovery.com. If you have conflicts with this outfit, file complaints directly with the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) Bureau of Consumer Protection: http://www.ftc.gov/ftc/complaint.htm . The FTC has the power to investigate your concerns and to take appropriate action. MyFamily.com, RootsWeb, and Ancestry are currently investigating these concerns, and will respond as appropriate under current Fair Use Copyright and Truth in Advertising laws. As a public service to the genealogy community, the GENEALOGICAL WEB SITE WATCHDOG lists some Web sites that provide misleading or inaccurate genealogical information. It also provides links for submitting Internet fraud complaints. The census was District No. 72B Esi?g and the census shows Newman Pounds, age 26, Elizabeth Pounds age 18,and William O Pounds, age 11/12. Would there be birth records for 1849 which would have been the birth year for William O. Pounds. Also any marriage information on Newman and Elizabeth. I think her maiden name was Stroud. Any help at all would be appreciated. Thank you Pat Becker

    1. [MOPULASK] Bad news from another list!!
    2. Friends, I am forwarding this from another list that I am on the web site they are referring to is http://www.familydiscovery.com/ Debbie Walters ------------------- X-Message: #2 Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2001 22:24:03 -0800 From: Margie <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Message-id: <[email protected]> Subject: Charging to link to Free sites.. not fair Content-type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit I just became aware that your Discovery.com site is charging people 7.95 for link information to sites on many of the free genealogy sites, Including the sites I host at rootsweb. I take offense at this, as I work hard to make sure the information is free for everyone. You defeat that goal.. and did not even find any of this information on your own... I am sending a copy of my note (this note) to aol's abuse address. I feel it is not fair for you to do this. I am also posting a copy of this note to the lists I host at Rootsweb. Please remove any mention of sites at Rootsweb, GenWeb, etc.. unless provided at no charge. I pay for copies, I upload the information & don't charge for it.. [email protected] I took a minute out of our volunteer typing time to check this site out. http://www.familydiscovery.com/ It is a fraudulent site because a membership gives you links to our free sites. You do not have to pay to get to any site in USGenWeb Right here, there is no charge to get to all the counties in USGenWeb. We are all hardworking volunteers to have genealogy information free for researchers. I have found links to our Macoupin civil war rosters, censuses, which we spent many hours of volunteer time now to have unknowing researchers pay a membership to click on a link to view our work. Macoupin County ILGenWeb volunteers have put over 1400 pages of free information and continuing to work to get more pages up. If any person finds our complete work in their membership, please notify me. Please pass this information onto any list. Let's try to keep these ripoffs from making their pile of money from our volunteer work. Please pass this onto any list you might be on. Hopefully, this site will be removed soon if not sooner.
