For now I think I will just file what you sent. I may have a lead on Hugh Smith m: Eleander {Nellie} Johnston. If I can find a Hugh Smith on the census of 1860 Independence Co., Arkansas. I found in Civil War records that a Hugh Smith {b: 1818 or 1819, which would work out}. The record is from Gratiot Street Prison, St. Louis< MO. The record says: Hugh Smith, Citizen, from Independence Co., Ark; was captured in Dunklin County, Mo, Sept 13, 1863, height 5.8, age 45, hazel eyes, dark hair: I don't know how long he was in the prison, but I have heard or read that a Hugh Smith was in the prison, and his wife went 'up' to get him. One of his relatives may also have been in the Prison, but I have found no record of a Smith being there. The Civil War records are found at http://pacivilwar.com/pow I have not checked all of the prisons in St Louis. They were Union. Thanks much and keep me in mind.
