    1. [MOPOLK] Tombstone cleaning
    2. J Ad
    3. Hi All, I have nothing scientific as to this remedy, but i've been told: "regular aerosol mens shaving cream is the item to use for clearing the inscriptions to make them readable". It has been several years since I received this advice and cannot vouch for it, as i've not tried it. Instructions were to spray it on the inscriptions and wait a few minutes, then wipe off with clean cloth. I was assured it wouldn't harm the stones. Anyone know of this method? If this is true, I imagine the whole stone could be cleaned, at least on the smooth services. Jim A

    3. Kay, Perhaps a consultation with the county conservation agent or a biology teacher from a high school or one of the biology professors from the college, might be a starting point. The cleaning agent "Simple Green" has been used by members of my family on headstones for a mold condition. It is bio-disposable. Good luck from another Shady Grove descendent (Irby & Johnston, etc) Judith Welsh On May 29, 2007, at 9:35 PM, Kay Snow wrote: > I have been working on adding some cemetery photos to the Polk Co. web > site. > Since I have family at Shady Grove #1 and Trimble those have had most > of my > attention. > > I wish everyone would take a look and tell me what they think. 3. I have been working on adding some cemetery photos to the Polk Co. web site. Since I have family at Shady Grove #1 and Trimble those have had most of my attention. I wish everyone would take a look and tell me what they think. Some of the tombstones are being covered with a "substance" I don't know if it is some kind of moss or something else. If you know what it is and how to get rid of it I would really appreciate it. Some of the stone are so covered they can't be read and I would like to "uncover them". Thanks as always, Kay http://www.rootsweb.com/~mopolk/shadygr_cem_list.html Click on "GRIFFIN Elijah M(ilton) to see the picture

I found one that was broken. I saw Breshears, Farmer, Crawford... some look new & some are real old. It was hard to read some because of their age, the weeds & it was pouring rain and I was soaked and had ticks crawling on me. I took 2 pictures of the cemetery that I will post here when I get them back or I can snail mail or e-mail them to you. If you need help finding the cemetery let me know and I can show you where it is... brokenwing @ windstream.net put your name/Breshears in the subject line so I don't delete it. I won't get back down there for a while. Were most of the stones still standing or have they fallen ? Can you tell how many graves there are. Thanks again, I really appreciate what you done. Turn Right on S. 230th (a gravel road), turn left on E. 368 go .8 of a mile. The cemetery is on a dairy farm, the first house on the right side of the road. Ask for permission you can walk or drive. I couldn't find his stone, the weeds are about 3 feet tall, broken tree limbs & it's raining. If you go spray yourself with "OFF" lots of ticks there and if you have a gas weed trimmer you might want to bring it with you ha! However, the map does not show a road to the cemetery, it appears to be in a field. So likely you will need to stop and ask for permission to get to this cemetery. If you come up with better directions, please let me know so I can post it on the Polk Co.web site. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mopolk/ It appears that a Breshears still owns land in the general area. Died 14 March 1900. My grandfather was a neighbor to J.L. Brashears ( the way it is spelled on Plat map )in 1900. I'm thinking the corner of his land is at present day Hiway C, and Mathis Rd. Brashears property is just west of the Mathis property. Does anyone know if this is where the Breshears Cemetery is, and if there are any stones left in this cemetery?
