I am wondering what any historical records or newspaper records are like from 1860 in Polk county. My 3rd great grandfather had 2 brothers there in the 1860 census, both in Marion Township. The first was the Jeremiah and Ellen Chambers family. They had a son named Christopher about age 3 in 1860. The census also indicates they had the poor house in their home as well as a stepnephew Elijah Downing, and a Nancy Dowell, blind and 45, who was either Jeremiahs cousin or Aunt. One of Jeremiahs younger brothers was also living in Marion township. That was Noah Chambers and his wife Mary. I can't seem to find the Jeremiah Chambers family anywhere after 1860. I am wondering if he died before 1870.

I cannot say that the other spellings did not refer to my ancesters as I cannot go back farther than 4 generations on my Kennedy side.I have found that the early census takers weren't always careful in their spelling, many used nick names for first names and spelled surnames like they sounded.Kennedy with two n's has been my family's spelling for four generations. Sally Looney, daughter of Isam Looney and Annie Littlefoot had a son, Lorenzo Dow; he had a daughter Melvina and she was my great grandmother. I have some information on her; marriage license, death certificate. Lorenzo, who went by L.D. most of the time, is listed in the 1880 census as her grandfather but on her marriage license it shows him to be the father, giving his consent to the marriage as she was under age. I believe Lorenzo died some time after 1904 and cannot find him in any cemetery in Missouri. Lorenzo married twice; first to Mildred Galloway in St. Clair County, MO and second to Harriet Bradburn with the second marriage yielding him 3 sons, James, Frederic and Henry and there are probate records in Cedar County on them. If anyone has photos of anyone in this family I would love to see them. Do not have information as to Lorenzo's father but the name may be James Canada but no proof just yet.
