Her name was Martha Jane Mitchell b. 1830 In Ms. (According to census records). She married William M. Woodrome/Woodrum abt 1848 in Greene, Mo. Martha is listed on the 1880 census for Jackson Twp. in Polk Co, Mo. as a widow, next to S. B. Mitchell and his family. Was wondering if she is connected to the Mitchell's in Polk Co. Thank You. I have copies of several family history manuscripts titled, "The Devin Family". Each one from a different time frame and compiler, but all are based on a common, earlier work. I am trying to trace the origins of the earlier work. The first paragraph in all of them reads, "The progenitor of the Devin Family in America, was William Devin, Sr. He was born in Dublin, Ireland in the year 1724, and the descendant of a Huguenot family that was driven from France because of religious persecutions." The history centers around the Clayton Devin and Margaret West Devin family of Polk County, MO. It contains sketchy information of Devins in Pittsylvania county VA and Lincoln County, TN (Clayton's ancestors and cousins). Most of the information is for Clayton and Margaret's children in Polk County MO, Wallowa County OR, and Morrow County OR. The most detailed information is about Alfred Harrison Devin(b. 29.Sep.1840), youngest son of Clayton and Margaret West Devin. Alfred Harrison was born in Polk County and live around Dunnegan, MO. I am looking for copies of this work that date from before 1940 and any supporting letters that would help trace this manuscript back to its original author. What I have: * A typed 10-page manuscript that was sent from Etta Devin Parker (wife of Loyal R. Parker) to Irene F. Devin circa 1940. Etta was in Heppner, OR at the time. This manuscript seems to be the basis of Dessa Devin Hoffstetters later work. * A typed 36-page manuscript reportedly sent to Irene ----- (wife of Ken) by Dessa Devin Hoffstetter just before Dessa died in 1966. This appears to be a copy of Dessa's original manuscript. * A printed 36-page book published circa 1970 which is based on Dessa's book but with information added after she passed away. * A printed 36-page book published circa 1972 which is a derivative of the 1970 publication. No author other than Dessa is acknowledged. * A printed 36-page book published circa 1978 which is a second derivative of the 1970 publication. No author other than Dessa is acknowledged. If you have any information about the original origins of these works or who published the books after Dessa's death, please send a private message to [email protected] Thank you, David Devin Devin Timber Site Producer http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~devin __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The families from Barren County that I'm familiar with settled mainly in the NE corner of Polk County. Some of the names are Huckaby, Bridges, Francis, Bradshaw, Kinslow, Meadors, and Payne. A lot of these families are buried in Hopewell Cemetery. Hi, Does the name "Wilber or Wilburn" Stokes sound familiar? In the obit. of my husband's great grandmother, it mentions a "Stokes cousin" who his great grandmotherwas living with. One of the Case cousins found this information for us. I don't know anything more of Maranda or Wilber. Would he be one of your cousins? Thanks, Karen In the 1880 census for Springfield, Greene Co.,Mo. Maranda Litteral was living with her parents Elijah and Barbara, as recorded on page 285. The Polk Co., Mo. census was taken on Jun 24, 1880 and at this time she was living with her Aunt Barbara Paralee (Case) Litteral, who was married to William A. Litteral. This Maranda eventually married Wilburn Stokes and became the "Randi Stokes" with whom Curt's Grandma Louisa Case Stewart lived with at the time of her death. .................................................................... 1910 OK Fed.
