Hi, My ancestors were Vaughn/Woody families and I wonder if you have a listing for Archeleus Vaughn and or his wife Frances or children Celia Oliver, Melinda Kelly, or Wm. and Sarah Brazeale Vaughn? Thanks for checking. Glennis
There are a few from the relocated cemeteries buried in various other cemeteries in Polk County as they did not want to be in Dade County. I know some families who did this. Linda Crawford
They did not do a very good job of identifying the graves when they moved them. My grandparents are buried in Vaughn and I found several graves that just states Unknown Crains. I have the cemetery book for Vaughn and would be glad to do a lookup for anyone interested. There are lots of "unknowns" in it. The book includes Pickett and Young cemeteries. Hi all, There were four or five cemeteries relocated when the Corps of Engineers made Stockton Lake. Research was done to determine the next of kin of those buried (if possible), they were contacted to get permission (out of courtesy, really, you know the Corps was going to build the lake anyway) and then the tombstones AND caskets were moved to a cemetery in Dade County. I am pretty sure the new cemetery was Vaughn Cemetery for all of the relocated cemeteries from Polk. According to the Mo 1840 Census :Heads of familites are listed in the exact order in which they appeared on the census record with family members enumerated by age groups in the following order: Males first, then females in the same age groups. Under age 5, 5-10,10-15,15-20,20-30,30-40.40-50 etc. For example Hunt John: 000100001. 1 male 15-20, 1male 60-70. Female line would be the same. Female:0011001 Hunt Thomas Page 153 00004 Female Page 153 1001 Hope this helps If you have trouble figuring this out please contact me again, Jennie ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, April 09, 2004 1:31 PM Subject: [MOPOLK] John Hunt 1840 Polk Co Mo Census 9 April 1840 HELP !! > Will someone be so kind to give me age breakdowns for male & > females in 1840 Polk Co Mo Census. Several of my Bronaugh and Knowles ancestors are buried in the Barren Creek Cemetery in Polk Co. I was lucky enough to be able to visit the cemetery two years ago, plus the courthouse, museum, genealogical society, and library. I have a question about something that is in a cemetery book (I don't know which one) that includes Barren Creek Cemetery. It says "From an undated newspaper clipping "Early Memories of Barren Creek Church", Aunt Betty Williams says, "The cemetery was started in about 1867....(the first two burials are discussed and then she says) "no one was buried there until the next summer and then it was Uncle Tommy Knowles." "Thomas Knowles was born in 1785 and died in 1871..." Thomas Knowles is one of my ancestors. I have him on the census in 1850 and 1860 in Polk Co. Does anyone have any information on the clipping "Early Memories of Barren Creek Church" or any other information about the Barren Creek church? I'm trying to learn more about this Knowles family. (Two of Thomas Knowles' daughters--Ellen and Judah-- married into my Bronaugh line. Thanks, Cindy Shebbear: A village in Devon, England. Bev, I was in Polk County two years ago in the summer (and I first asked for tips from this list on places to go). I had a great time and found lots of info. I hope you do, too. Hi all, I would say that there are at least four "musts" in Bolivar itself and many more in Polk County overall. These four musts are the courthouse on the town square. Then the Polk County Genealogical Society Library, also on the square. Then the Polk County Museum, located three blocks north of the square on Main Street. Also the Polk County Library, located a mile or two west of the square on Broadway or Highway 32. All of these have different, unique genealogical resources to help with research. One important thing to look for at the libraries is cemetery records and once you find where your family is buried, then you can get directions to your family cemetery. (Definitely a MUST for most people.) Well, that's all I can think of. Maybe some others can think of some that I missed.
