There were actually a few William Wood references but none that matched up with your dates and such. I would suggest getting a copy of one of their childrens social security number application. If any of them lived into the 1940's, they should have a SS#. It will include both parents names including mothers (Jane) maiden name. They are available from the Social Security Admin. It takes awhile to get and I think the new fee is $27 but well worth the info. Best of luck. Chuck
This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Wood, Simmons Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/GMB.2ACE/641.1.1 Message Board Post: Charles, Thanks very much for the detailed information. I had not found the 1880 census listing for Joel Simmons. I had found the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 listings for Williamson a/k/a William Simmons. Based on your information, it appears that grandchildren William and Delilah living with Williamson in 1880 are probably the children of Samuel Simmons, their second son per the 1850 census. My primary interest in the Simmons family is a possible connection to Jane Wood, wife of William Wood, living two doors away from the Simmons in 1880. The Woods lived in the Weston area until shortly after 1900 when they moved to Crook Co., Oregon. The 1880 census shows Jane's father's birthplace as Indiana, and the Simmons are the only people nearby with that connection -- Joel and Samuel were born in Indiana, per the 1850 census, (and also shown in the grandchildren's listing). Based on your record of Joel Simmons' family in 1880, it is still possible that Jane Wood was an eldest daughter who had married William Wood by 1880. The 1870 record would probably resolve the question, but I have had no luck finding Joel in 1870. I'm wondering if any of your Platte Co. resources may have some references to the William and Jane Wood family. Mainly, I want to determine Jane's maiden name. Jane was born Dec 1856. She was known as Jane in the family and that's what her headstone says, but a later Oregon Census record lists her name as Virginia, and a possible death record in Oregon lists Susan as her first name. Her husband William James Wood (b. Aug 1842) is listed as born in Maryland or England in 1880, 1900 and 1910 census. They were married around 1875. They had children George, Lena, Robert (Martin), Walter, Ada, Othmer, and Marie (Josie), all born while they lived in Weston Twp from 1877 to 1899. The 1900 Weston City census shows the family on p175A, SD4, ED144, dwelling #224. Word in our family has been that Jane Wood had lots of relatives in Missouri - in the Platte Co. area and possibly also in Clay Co., so if there are any clues to her family background available in your records, I'd be very interested. Have not found the Woods' marriage record in indexes available on the Internet, so any suggestions of other places to look would be appreciated. Bob Bryan Seattle, WA
Mary Ann, Came across the Sewell name in Jackson County while looking for something else. Sending a copy to MOPLATTE list for archive purposes: Jack Sewell, retired farmer, 813 South Park street, Independence, Mo., was born in Shelby County, Ky., March 28, 1864. Dr. Franklin Lewis Sewell, his father was born in Fairfax County, Va., in 1825, removed with his parents to Kentucky, was educated for the profession of medicine and in 1871, migrated to Jackson County and located on a farm in Blue township, south of Independence. This farm is now owned by Ed Witte. After leaving the farm, Dr. Sewell resided in Independence for two years and then built a residence in Englewood, on Wayne avenue, where he resided for five years prior to his death in 1904. The mother of Jack Sewell was Elizabeth (Baird) Sewell, also a native of Shelby County, Ky. She died when the subject of this sketch was but six weeks old. By a later marriage with Elizabeth Gale, Dr. Sewell was father of a son, Joseph Sewell, who died at Long Beach, Cal. at the age of 46 years. Jack Sewell graduated from the Independence High School and during his active life he followed farming in Jackson County. He is now living retired in his comfortable home at 813 South Park street. Mr. Sewell was married on June 7, 1885 to Nora B. Smith, who has borne him two children, Frank and Sybyl Sewell. Nora B. Smith's father was Dr. Minor T. Smith who was born near Lexington, Ky. and came to Jackson County in the early days when land was still open for entry. He lived on a farm near Raytown and practiced medicine for many years, HISTORY OF JACKSON COUNTY dying at the age of 88 years in December, 1914. He was a veteran of the Mexican War and was wounded in the knee at the capture of Vera Cruz. His wife, Catherine (Beckham) Smith, was reared in Jackson County and died at the age of 42 years. The children of the Smith family were: Mrs. J. G. Hoff, Independence; Hubbard T., deceased; Henry H., L&s Angeles, CaL; Nora B. Sewell, of this sketch; Fleetwood Smith, whose whereabouts are unknown; Brooking- C., Phoenix, Ariz. By a later marriage with Laura Hunter, Dr. Smith had a son and daughter, Laura, wife of Dr. Kenyon, superintendent of the County Home; and Edwin L., Bay-town, Mo. Dr. Frank Sewell, with offices in the Owens Building, was born on a farm near Independence. He was educated in the public schools and the Raytown High School and studied for two years in William Jewell College. He graduated from the medical department of the University of Tennessee in 1915 and began the practice of his profession in Kansas City, later removing to Humboldt, Kan. and thence to Malta Bend from which city he enlisted in the Medical Corps of the United States army during the World War. He was first stationed at Fort Oglethorpe, then sent to Camp Beauregard, La., and from there he was sent to Camp Upton, Long Island from which point he embarked for overseas in November, 1918. He served in France with Base Hospital No. 11, at Brest. He also served at Bordeaux and was also on detached service. Dr. Sewell returned home on July 1, 1919 and resumed his practice in August, 1919. , Chuck McCardie

Your letter may indicate she was married to WIlliam Wilson and he addressed her as mother and them addressed them both. Remember, some of his info came from family members and is only as good as it's source. There is another entry on Jacob in Nov, 1861. He was one of a number of New Market residents who were apprehended by soldiers from Ft. Leavenworth under orders of General Hunter, due to their southern sympathies. With the soldiers came "red-legs" and thieves to help themselves to horses, carraiges and any other valuables they could carry away. The military permitted the outlaws to steal without hindrance. Now to make things real confusing, I found this in "History of Buchanan County, 1881". 1048 BIOGRAPHICAL. B. F. HIGDON, farmer, section 28, postoffice Wallace, was born in Ohio, September 9, 1827. He received a good education, and followed teaching school for some time, then learned the carpenter trade, after which he engaged in the grocery business, continuing for four years. He then read law, and, in due time, was admitted to the bar, and practiced sixteen years. He married, in 1848, Miss Minnie J. Demarree, a native of Indiana, by whom he had three children : Eaber, Lewis F., Anna E. Of these, two survive. His wife died in 1856. In 1857, he was married to Nancy Ash-craft, by whom he had one child, Evan. They separated in 1860. He. was divorced from her on account of desertion. He then, in 1862, married Elizabeth Andrews, a native of Missouri. They had one child, .Mary E. This wife died .in 1872. September 16, 1876, he married Mrs. Mahala Cox, with whom he has lived happily, and is well satisfied with his condition in life. He is a member of the .Methodist Episcopal Church. He s! erved one year, during the civil war, in Company I, Twenty-fifth Illinois Regiment. He then came home, and recruited a company in the Missouri State Militia, under Colonel Denny. He commanded this company, serving one year. Had three horses shot under him, but he received no wounds- His wife was born in Todd County, Kentucky, February 20, 1816. She was raised on a farm. Her education-was very limited. She was first married to Guilford Montray, January 5, 1836. He was a native of Kentucky, born November 17, 1814. By this marriage they had seven children : John W., born April 22, 1837 : William R., born March 23, 1839, died May 18, 1867 ; George M., born December 20, 1840; Louisa E., born October 23, 1842, died January 14, 1874; Angeline, born August 28, 1844; Meret Y., born September 11, 1846, died January 20, 1854; Mary B., born November 28, 1848. Her husband died February 21, 1852. She then married Jacob B. Cox, July 11, 1852. From this union were born two children : Jacob A., born March 4, 1853, being the day Franklin Pierce was inaugurated President of the United States ; and Mahala A., born July 15, 1855. She was divorced from Jacob B. Cox., on account of poligamy. She then, in 1869, married Hugh Mathews, a native of Iowa. In less than one year she discovered that he had a wife in Iowa, and she discarded him. September 16, 1876, she married B. F. Higdon, with whom she has since continued to live very happily. She has a lifetime dower in fifty-six acres of land, which is well improved, and in gopd state of cultivation, and provided with a good house and barn. She is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. L Geesh, I just found out my new scanner will let me copy and paste after scanning from a book. Thank goodness. Anyway, I would have to think the Jacob Cox are one in the same and with the poligamy mentioned above, some did not know of or did not speak of his marraige to Mahala. She seemed to have a problem with that. It appears though to me that it does not give Mahalas maiden name as it shows her first marraige was to a Montray. I will let you figure it out! Chuck
