    3. Hi Wes, Have you seen the article on W. H. Adams in the the "Annals of Platte Co" addendum? It doesn't say anything about his ancestors, but because he lived in Kansas, perhaps you couldn find more information about him in Atchison or Leavenworth. 1. Re: [MOPLATTE] Kansas City MO Metropolitan Police 1885
    2. Angie Anthony
    3. Hello All, Of course, this question would be better suited to the MO-Jackson list, the county in which Kansas City is located. Kathleen, the Police Department's website would be www.kcpd.org I do know that LAST year, a course about the history of the KCMO Police Dept was taught through UMKC's Continuing Education Department: Kansas City's Finest and Their Leaders: The Kansas City Police Department and its Chiefs 2 Sessions/J. Tobin Sat. and Sun.: July 28 and 29 2001 The police generally serve as the point of contact between the public and the criminal justice system. The material for this course begins in 1894, when the Kansas City Police Department was first organized. The department's development, growth, rough spots, challenges, and victories will be examined. History and anecdotes about the Kansas City Police Department, its officers, and the chiefs who directed it will be explored. J. TOBIN who taught this course last year is teaching other classes this year on the history of crime, laws, etc. so he appears to have some expertise and credibility. http://iml.umkc.edu/ce/F02cc.htm#a&s The UMKC website says these courses are taught by University faculty or adjunct faculty members who are recognized experts in their fields. He would probably be a good resource for this question also. Oh, here is Jack Tobin's contact info http://iml.umkc.edu/soc/tobin.htm 106F Ernest Manheim Hall, KCMO 816-235-2516 fax: 816-235-1117 jjt198@umkc.edu Mr. Tobin's office hours are from 1:00pm to 5:00pm, MWThF, and by appointment. There IS a tie from Platte County to the KCMO police department that I always found interesting and wanted to explore further. That the actors/brothers (or half-brothers) Wallace Beery and Noah Beery Sr, were sons of a Kansas City policeman (whose name was Noah Beery, so technically the older actor was Noah Beery Jr., making his actor son Noah Beery III but that is not how they are known) The Beery family had numerous ties to Platte County and many are buried in Smith Cemetery (near my McHenry family's section) Platte County's covered bridge was called 'Noah's Ark,' being named after a great great uncle of the actors, Judge Noah Beery. (My gggrandfather, George W Heath, helped to saw the lumber for the bridge) Anyway, I always wondered just when and why Wallace and Noah's father moved to Kansas City, sometime around 1885. It seems like a bigger 'leap' in those days, to move from Platte Co to the CITY to work in its Police force! And here's a final thought, taking us back to KC: when Wallace Beery and Jean Harlow played husband and wife in the movie 'Dinner at Eight,' do you think they chatted about their experiences of growing up/living in the Kansas City in between shots??? ------------------------------------------- Angie Anthony, MLS MOCLAY list administrator Kansas City, MO angieant@swbell.net ------------------------------------------- Owner, Family History Researcher 816.333.3366 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kathleen O'Brien-Blair" <ktho@kc.rr.com> To: <MOPLATTE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, August 15, 2002 9:46 AM Subject: Re: [MOPLATTE] Kansas City MO Metropolitan Police 1885 > Here is the site for the KCPD History page - I think they have an Historian > and an archive.
