    1. Re: [MOPLATTE] Re: Luthy
    2. Angie Anthony
    3. Hello All, According to the 'History of Clay and Platte Counties': There is a bio of Capt. Franklin Luthy born in Berkeley county VA February 20, 1824. It says his father, Jacob Luthy, a native of Switzerland, emigrated to the US when a young man and followed the occupation of teaching for a number of years in Virginia. He was married in that state to Miss Mary Fox, after which he became engaged in the mercantile business, continuing it until his death in the year 1842. The rest of the bio is about Jacob's son Franklin. I would suggest that you check the passenger list books for when and where Jacob entered the country. Sounds like he spent most of his life in VA, maybe you can track down his wife, Mary Fox's, family there for further clues. 1. [MOPLATTE] Lucinda Muir Basket Turner
    2. FULTON DAILY SUN 21 Mar 1908 - Died at the home of her son in law. A.R. Demasters, three miles west of Platte City, Feb 20 1908, Mrs Lucinda Turner. With this good mother in Israel passes away another of the pioneers of Platte County. Miss Lucinda Muir was born in Madison CO. Kentucky August 17 1824. She came with her parents to Callaway Co, Mssouri, where she married John Basket. Mr Basket dying Nov 11 1846., she married a second time, her brother in law, Graham Turner, of Platte Co. Missouri., March 29 1856. Mr Turner had come with the first settlers to Platte CO in 1839, and when his wife died he returned to Callaway Co and married hiswifes sister. On the fine farm a few miles north of Farley, they reared their family. There were six children of the first marriages: John Turner who died Jan 17 1908, George Turner of Boulder, Colorado, and Robert Turner of Fulton , Missouri, Mrs Susan B. Lynes of Callaway Co., Mrs Mary Hon and Mrs Frankie Farley of Platte Co. To Mrs. Turner fell the task of raising her sisters and her own children, a duty she performed with faithfulness. On January 3, 1880, her husband passed away to his reward, leaving a fine farm of 320 acres of rich Platte Co. land to his widow and children. After services at the home of her daughter, Mrs A.R.Demasters, by Elder Louis Cupp of Kansas City, the remains were interred Feb 21 1908 in the cemetery in Platte City.

    1. [MOPLATTE] Re: BURKE & BLAND Family of Platte County, MO
    2. Not from this family but used to live in Platte Co., MO. Contact Ann Joy Scott at annjoyscott@hotmail.com who wrote a book about her Bland Ancestors from Missouri and also contact LaVerne Bland, Rt. 1, Edgerton, Missouri 64089 who descended from Blands in Missouri. He traced ancestry back to Osborne Bland, Jr. whose father was Osborne Sr., whose father was John and Margaret Bland Osborne of Kentucky. Hope this gives you a couple of leads.

    1. [MOPLATTE] Re: AMANDA M. VAUGHN & SHEPHERD family
    2. Dave, My husband's mother was Martha Shepherd, daughter of Ernest Vaughn Shepherd. Ernest V. was the son Of Lemuel M. Shepherd. Lemuel was a son of John and Amanda. Unfortunately I cannot add any more to what you already know. I have not really started researching this family yet. I do plan on that sometime in the near future. The information I have says that John was originally from Virginia. There were several Shepherds in the Rev. War from Virginia. I just need to do some research. My email is : jthiesen@ipa.net. Thanks, Chris

    1. [MOPLATTE] Bane Cemetery
    2. Per the "Annals of Platte County, Missouri 1897", the old Bane farm was two miles south of Platte City. Could this be the location of the Bane cemetery i am seeking? Does anyone know the exact location? I would like directions inorder to visit it. Is this cemetery on private land, and is it accessible?

    1. [MOPLATTE] Re: AMANDA M. VAUGHN & SHEPHERD family
    2. Amanda & John SHEPHERD were the great-grandparents of my wife's paternal grandfather. Their son, Lemuel, had a son, William, who removed to Table Rock, Nebraska, where his son, Marvin (my wife's grandfather) was born and raised. In at least one instance, Amanda took out a land grant on her own, in her own name. I know from the 1840 Census that John & Amanda owned at least one slave, if not more. They are said to have come from Kentucky to Missouri. Of course, this Amanda was Patrick N CUMBERFORD's second wife. Can you add anything to this mix? Thanks! Dave McDonald

    1. [MOPLATTE] Frank DICK m. Ellen NUGENT 1873, & link to COMBESTS?
    2. Ellen Nugent DICK was my gGrandad's younger sister, and we know quite a lot about this family in NW Missouri, but almost nothing about the DICK side. After her mother's death in Wisc, Ellen moved with her family to NE Andrew Co in early 1868, only to lose her father a year later. We believe she married Frank DICK in early 1873 and moved to Aurora (SW Missouri) very shortly after. They returned to NW Missouri (Savannah) before the birth of their 3rd child in Spring of 1877. After her husband died, though, Ellen went back to Aurora sometime between 1916 and 1924, and was living there at the time of her 31 Jan 1929 death. My reason for posting an inquiry on the Platte Co site is that Ellen's sister Sophia married a Sam COMBEST who was born in Platte Co (Camden Point, 1843) of a large clan that had recently migrated from Pulaski Co, Kentucky. Sam COMBEST's grandmother was Sarah DICK, also from Pulaski Co, and it is tempting to think that some of the DICK family was part of that same migration. I've recently learned that Frank DICK's birthplace was Kentucky, furthering the idea that his early years may have been spent in Platte Co, and his link to the NUGENTs was through Sam COMBEST. Sam married Sophia in 1871, just a year or two before Frank married Ellen, and both men died in Savannah. If anyone can help establish this link, or offer more info on the mysterious Frank DICK, I would be most grateful. Thanks, Tom Simkin simkin@erols.com

    2. Here is what I have ... Traugott C. Butner ... child of Christian Butner/Maria Leinbach B: 2/1848 in North Carolina, M: 1870 in Missouri to Adelia ?? who was born 2/1852 in Wisconsin. I have two children born to that union: Maggie Butner 10/1889 in Missouri and Susie Butner 9/1894 in Missouri. Is that the information that you were looking for? I don't know any more about Thomas H Butner and his family. Have you checked out the Moravian Church web site? The Butner family was a big part of their history and vice versa. Check out the surnames list.

    1. [MOPLATTE] Re: Thomas H. Butner
    2. Margaret J. Butner was born 4-14-1847 according to her headstone. She is buried next to Thomas but they have seperate stones. After we got the cemetery cleaned I did some research and the cemetery is called the Babcock Cemetery. Thomas has a military Cival War headstone but shows no dates on it. I did pull his Missouri Military file and found out he founght for Company K, 18th Missouri Infantry. He got a medical discharge and then enlisted at a later date in the Kansas Cavalry. I will try to slip by there and get a photo for you but don't know when it will be. Darrell

    2. Darryl ... I have a Thomas Henry Butner in my family. He was born 12/21/1843 in North Carolina. He was married to Maggie J. Buron about 1869 in Waldron Township, Platte, Missouri. She was born about 4/1847 in Maryland. As far as I know they had two children: Edward Butner b: 1870 and Florence "Flora" b: 11/1879 ... both in Waldron Township, Platte, Missouri. Thomas Henry died 3/11/1922 and Maggie died 9/19/1923 ... both in Leavenworth, Leavenworth, Kansas. I was told they were buried in Babcock Cemetery. I would love to have a picture of the headstones. I look forward to hearing from you. Annette
