I can tell you that Platte was not organized until the last day of 1838 and most offices of gov't were established in 1839. The land of Platte in 1830 was actually not part of MO as the original state line was straight north and south. I believe the land was occupied by the Sacs and other indians during that period of time. In other words, your man probably was not there in 1830. Doing a quick look there is no mention of the name in the "Annals of Platte County". I did see him in the 1850 census in Platte County, Preston Township: Trapp, Terry 41 M KY Farmer Jackson 20 F MO Sarah 17 F MO Joseph 15 M MO Lucinda 13 F MO Reece 11 M MO Rial 9 M MO Mary 8 F MO Viena 6 F MO Elizabeth 4 F MO HTH, Chuck -- The older I get, the better I was!

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Bowen, Doyle, Hibbs, Cashow, Denny, Kearns, Middleton, Tincher Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GMB.2ACE/609 Message Board Post: Dabney Bowen (son of Richard James Bowen) was born December 29, 1809 in Virginia, died March 18, 1892 in Platte County, Missouri on his farm 3 miles west of the city (Weston?). He lived in Putnam County, Indiana in 1850 in Marion Township and is shown in the 1870 Platte County, Missouri Census in the township of Weston. His first wife is unknown to us, married second wife, Martha Cashow, March 18, 1843 in Boone Co., Indiana. Third wife was Winiford Doyle (late consort of John Doyle) who was born Dec. 24, 1821 and died March 12, 1896 in Platte County, Missouri. According to cemetery records of Platte County Missouri, Book 2, Dabney and Winiford Doyle Bowen, daughters Annie and Martha Bowen are buried in the oldest part of a beautiful cemetery - Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, 3 miles NE of Weston. Annie and Martha are daughters by the 3rd wife. Dabney had children by first 2 wives, namely Lucy A. Bowen, Richard H. Bowen, Mary Bowen, and Sarah Bowen. According to Paxton's Anna! ls of Platte County, Dabney Bowen was awarded the contract on Feb. 20, 1874 to feed the poor for $1.50 a week. Dabney had siblings, Florentine Bowen who died in infancy in Virginia, Wesley Bowen who married Mary Angeline Tincher, Sarah Bowen who married John Kearns of Buchannon Co. Missouri, Charles Bowen, Henry Bowen who married Rachel Hibbs, James Bowen who married Nancy (Annie) Jane Middleton of Kentucky (my 2nd great grandfather), Elizabeth Bowen, and Young Bowen who married Mary Ann Denny. I am curious, are any of Dabney Bowen's descendants in or around Platte County?

    2. Phyllis Nelson
    3. Thank you all for your kind words and interest in the notebooks that I have. These notebooks were all put together before the use of computers to record genealogy and family trees. Our tenant devised his own system for recording family and I have not figured out the system yet. It will take me some time to do this and it will probably be late in September before I can get back to it. I will post the surnames to this list when I have figured out what the lines were. This much I can tell you, there were family members born in Platte County, in Kentucky and South Carolina. Beyond that I have not figured out what the list of names is. I have saved all of your e-mails and I will get back to you. I am going to unsubscribe for a few weeks so that I don't fill up my mailbox. Thank you again for the help and ideas. 3. Hi Phyllis, The Friends of the Clayton (genealogical society) here in Houston, Texas takes family histories such as the one you have, so I would think that contacting a Genealogical Society in Missouri would be your best bet. I am sure Platte County has one. I wonder if this "only daughter" has any children that may have an interest. I hear these stories often, and wonder why a person would feel this way. That is truly sad...especially for the father of this woman. 3. Phyllis, What a kind person your are. I would suggest contacting the following address: Platte County Historical Society P.O. Box 103 Platte City, MO 64079 I submitted group sheets for my Platte County families several years ago, and they were placed in the historical society's library. I'm sure the historical society would find these notebooks of value even if the gentleman's daughter doesn't. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: McComas Heath Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GMB.2ACE/608 Message Board Post: I have been trying to organize a group of people who are interested in genealogy to come to Platte County and help clean up the McComas Cemetery. It is located southwest of the old covered bridge on private property. The date(s) for the clean up are the weekend of October 20-21. I have a feeling that it may take an additional weekend so I am planning to be there on October 27-28 as well. Let's hope we can get most of it done the first weekend. I drove up to look at the cemetery on Saturday and it is worse than I remembered. I took some digital photos to share with volunteers what we are up against. I am also beginning to think beyond this initial clean up. Access to this cemetery is across private property. There is no path to it. The law in Missouri allows us to access it, nonetheless. Somehow, I am going to have to look into how we can make a drivable path to the cemetery, not just for the Clean Up Weekend, but for its future care. There is another cemetery, the Lutes Cem nearby, that I am using as my mental model. Someone has cleared a path, poured gravel on the path, put a fence around it, so that it can be mowed on a regular basis. This will require more thought, planning, etc. Maybe setting-up a non-profit group to accept donations for its upkeep. If anyone has suggestions or ideas about this, please let me know.
