    3. Fellow researchers, Does anyone have information about Ella Kilby who married John Thomas "Squire" Smith, October 1904? Both were in their elderly years when they mrried. I have the following small amount of information on her: An article in the Saturday Evening Post, June 2, 1951, was written by “Link” Kilby about his trip to England to study socialism, to report back to his friends in Vandalia, Mo., about his impressions of what he observed. This is the same Kilby family of Ella Kilby who was the second wife of grandfather John Thomas Smith. There was a “Link” Kilby at some of the Old Settlers reunions held in LeMaster’s Grove on the Middletown-Gazette Road, and it was “Grandma” Kilby who for a time was the oldest Old Settler at the reunions, who finally got too old to attend and so the reunion had to move, in part, over to her farm, for her to take part in it. “Grandma” Kilby was the first woman I ever saw smoking. She smoked a pipe and no one diapproved because she was very much respected and cherished by all her neighbors and family. She said herself that she was “tough as a hickory knot” and therefore not likely to be “hurt by a little smoke.” Bob Francis
