Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Pleasant Hill, Pike, Illinois was originally laid out circa 1835 under the name Fairfield. While this region was originally part of Upper Louisiana, it was "conquered" by George Rodgers Clark and his Rangers during the American Revolution, and the land East of the Mississippi River and North of the Ohio River became the Northwest Territory. The area where Pleasant Hill, Illinois is located was never part of the Louisiana Purchase, and so was never part of the Missouri Territory. Missouri became a state in 1821, but did not have an 1820 Federal Census due to the hoopla regarding statehood and the Missouri Compromise. ----- Original Message ----- From: "the Hamiltons" <hamilton@getus.com> To: <MOPIKE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 07, 2002 7:23 PM Subject: [MOPIKE-L] puzzle of Pleasant Hill & the Stevens family > I have a George Washington Stevens, b. 1831 in Louisiana MO. No, I don't believe Pleasant Hill was a part of Mo. but I do believe a family might have been there instead of MO. I have found that with my own family they were back and forth across the river, and have found them on both sides. Pat
I'm new around her-but trying to locate some of the Stephen Ingram family--lived in the Pike and Audrain co. late 1800's -also Margaret Ella William's connections--these folks were my line through my dad--any help greatly appreciated--think most of them may be buried in Mt. The Mississippi River separates Pleasant Hill, Il & Louisiana, Mo & the river is quite wide at this location with Mo bluffs at Louisana & Pleasant Hill, Il located on the Illinois bluffs so don't believe Pleasant Hill, Il would ever have been in Missouri since it became a village. ----- Original Message ----- From: "the Hamiltons" <hamilton@getus.com> To: <MOPIKE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 08, 2002 12:24 PM Subject: Re: [MOPIKE-L] Pleasant Hill in Pike CO? > Right, that's what's got me exctied--we have always been told that she was > born in MO, but this one in IL is so close to her father's birthplace, it > makes me wonder if IL could possibly have been part of MO back then? There is a great web site in Pike County Illinois, a lot of information on line check it out. Pat
You might try looking in Illinois, there is a Pleasant hill, in Pike county Illinois and it is just across the river. Pat
Right, that's what's got me exctied--we have always been told that she was born in MO, but this one in IL is so close to her father's birthplace, it makes me wonder if IL could possibly have been part of MO back then? This would be 1883. Janis, many thanks for doing this for me! Don't do any more county look ups, I'll see if I make some progress and keep your letter and bug you if I come up with a definite town. There are a lot of people in this Stevens family, I wish one of them would come looking for me! and bring the Family Money. Nancy
Oops... forgot to answer your first question Ha Ha... My brain isn't with it tonite. No, I have no idea about any community named Pleasant Hill. I've only been to Pike county once and don't remember too many of the communities. Most all of my Oliver family is from there but My mom's dad left there in the late "teens" about 1916 or so. Happy hunting. Janis, how nice of you! Do you have any idea if there was a community called Pleasant Hill there? I am hoping to find members of the Stevens family--if there are too many to list, maybe you can just tell me if there are Any. As well, do you show any surname of Brooks? My husband's grandmother Edith Brooks Stevens was born in Pleasant Hill MO, and I have found one in CAss county, one in Dent., now I wonder if there was one in Pike County. We figure there must have been some family there. And no one ever thought to ask her where the name Brooks came from - so I suspect a family connection there. Okay, now I am thoroughly confused. At the US Govt. mapping site, it doesn't even show a Pleasant Hill in Pike county, but in examining the pages at the Pike County website, I saw this below, mentioning Pleasant Hill cemetery. Is there, was there, a PH town in Pike County? "Spencer Township, Pike County Missouri cemeteries $20.00 plus $2.00 postage Tombstone inscriptions from the following cemeteries: Pleasant Hill, Curryville, Pitt, McCook, Mt Ayr, Dowell (2), Spencersburg, Parker. 80 pages plus 5 page index. I have a George Washington Stevens, b. 1831 in Louisiana MO. Most of his children were born in Chili IL, and his granddaughter, Edith Brooks Stevens was supposedly born "in a sod house on the Missouri prairie" in the town of Pleasant Hill MO. We don't know where this was, there is more than one, but I was startled today when I looked at a map of Louisiana MO to see, just over the MO/IL border, the town of Pleasant Hill IL, just about ten miles from Louisiana MO. Is it possible that in 1883 that part of IL would have been considered part of Missouri or that they were both part of a big "MO Territory". I know I can dig around, but wondered if anyone can answer this faster than I can find it out--it would make so much sense if this were the case, and it has got me excited. Were people in MO not included in the 1880 census because of it's not being a state? as this family does not appear on it. Nancy
