Gazette, Mo. is in the south eastern part of Pike co. Mo. in Hartford township. It is north of Middletown, Mo. It is at the crossroads of Highway K and AC. There are just a few houses there now. At one time it had a country store, blacksmith shop, post office, telephone exchange and several churches. The church or school on Rte K. is the Trower School, which was purchased by the Gazette Baptist church. It is used as the church today. Donna
Can't help on the church or school but I want to know where is or was Gazette-does it still exist--my grandmothers family was from that area--the Ingram and the Williams, thanks for info -----Original Message----- From: jmeyer <jmeyer@jvil.com> To: MOPIKE-L@rootsweb.com <MOPIKE-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, April 23, 2001 6:11 PM Subject: [MOPIKE-L] Old School or Church near Gazette >Does anyone have anformation on an old school or posibly it was a church >on what is now Highway K near the town of Gazette? Hello List: I just did a search on the Kansas Historical Society site and they have lots of Missouri newspapers on microfilm and they can be requested through interlibrary loan. The site explains how to do it. http://www.kshs.org Click on Research and Collections on the home page, then look for Types of Collections and click on Newspapers. I understand that the wear and tear on the masters of the newspaper microfilm has really limited the copies and circulation (not even for sale anymore)! We all want to preserve the film, but it is frustrating.
Hello List: It does appear that one needs to purchase the index of microfilm available at the State Historical Society of Missouri. I'll bet that some library has a copy, though. Try your local library and see if they can locate a copy and get it for you via interlibrary loan. Missouri isn't the only State that has limits. The Kansas State Historical Society limits interlibrary microfilm loans to 2 per person and it takes several weeks to get them. Then I just found out that they also have a limit of 8 films per library. So I am waiting for my turn to get my request processed. Then, when I get the films, I get 2 weeks to view them and no extension. Better than nothing, though. This is not intended to be critical of anyone or anything but I do not understand why it is so hard to get on interlibrary loan newspaper reels from the Missouri Historical Society. Correct me if I am wrong as this is how it appears to me. 1. To find the reel you might want you need to purchase their index. 2. The limit of reels one library can order is very slim and time restrained. It would appear to me that if you need information on the area you are searching these would be excellent sources. Anyone know the solution> Joan
Joan, It is likely a limit on how many circulating copies of the microfilm the library has. Often libraries will only have one circulating copy or perhaps only one copy period. The bottom line is that most Historical Societies have very limited budgets and try to accomidate as many people as possible. As frusterating as the time limit and limited number of reels are, the alternative might waiting months for obtaining the film. As for which reel you want, you are correct - it would be nice if it could be accessed online. I do not know why they do not make this available - perhaps it is a needed source of income to keep their library running. Two solutions you might try are 1) See if the Mormon Church's main library has a copy of the microfilm you want and rent it through your local Family History Center, or 2) see if you can find other libraries that have a copy of the microfilm and try to get it through them through inter-library loan. You are likely to have better luck with the former than the latter, though. As demand for copies go up, you will likely find that things become worse instead of better unless people start to financially support their Historical Societies. So, it is not that you are wrong, it is just that the solution requires $$. Anyway, this is what I try to think about when I am frustrated by limited access to material that I need. I fear that this will not solve your issue, but perhaps it will provide some measure of condolence. Hi folks. This may be old news but below is a site where the 1830 and 1840 images are available for all MO counties. They are in the process of adding 1850 to 1880 as well. It appears they are scanned by page number so you will need that info. I do not believe the site has a search engine to locate a surname on the census. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mackley/ Regards, Chuck McCardie -- The older I get, the better I was! Hello! I am working on Moss in Pike Co., MO in the 1850 and 1860 census. In addition to several listings of MOSS, there are also several listings for the last name MASE. Is it possible that the Mase might be an alternate spelling? 1850 Pike Co., MO census listings: Page 219 Dwelling/794 Family/819 Calumet Twp Moss, Isaac N 26 M Farmer Rents MO Lucinda 24 F TN William W 6 M MO Sarah J 4 F MO John T 3 M MO Page 221 Dwelling/813 Family/839 Calumet Twp Moss, Thomas H 29(?) Could they be siblings, or some of them? Are they related to the families they are living with? I am particularly interested in Malinda and Lenotta. In the 1860 census Malinda is living with the family of JEG Colvin and his wife, Zerelda. The information on Zerelda, except for spelling, might make her the Lenotta of the 1850 census. Hi, friends, I am seeking a divorce record in Pike Co. (or possibly Audrain Co.) some time between 1900 census and late 1903: Nathaniel and Rachel Westerman. They were together in the 1900 census in Audrain Co.; by 1904, Nathaniel has been remarried for six mos., and dies in a work related accident. What a surprise! No one in my family knew about the second marriage. Either there was a divorce from his wife of more than 30 yrs or he became a bigamist! (Wife #1 didn't die unti 1910) Does anyone have access to the Pike and/or Audrain Co. courthouses where divorce recs 1900-1903/4 might be kept? It has to have been within that small timeframe. Thank you for any info or advice. Sandra Lassen
According to a book from the Missouri State Archives, only 26 counties have census for 1876 and Pike isn't one of them. It looks like the LDS Family History Catalog has some of them. You might want to check there. Gloria Lester gclester@juno.com >>^. .^<< ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Can anyone tell me where McCune Station is/was located in Pike County? Is it the same as McCune Village? In the 1920 census my relatives (McClouds/Kelleys) are listed at McCune Village and Frankford Road. Is McCune Station in Spencer Township? Was it a large city? Thanks for any info. Rocky Kelley

Announcing an exciting new web site This new site is exciting, not because I have put it up, but because of its historical content. It presents the childhood memoirs of a man (Darwin Hawkins) who grew up in Pike County Missouri during the first two decades of the 20th Century. He tells what it was like growing up in Eolia , Whiteside, Silex, and Bowling Green. Best of all, he uses the actual names of the people he knew (I found references to everyone in my core family). For me the most thrilling find was the tale of a practical joke my dad played on him when they were in Louisiana for the Buffalo Bill Circus. There are all kinds of stories: school days, work ways, fulfillment, treachery, politics, social and folk ways (including dances and the coming of movies), murder, suicide, etc. You name it. If it was a part of life, Darwin covered it! There are some inaccuracies, e.g., He tells how two of my uncles came back from WW I without a scratch. In truth, both were severely wounded. Nonetheless, Darwin wrote what he remembered from his own first-hand experience. My cousin Ned Shelton and I want him to be famous for that, among all those who are interested in Pike County history. The URL for the site is: http://www.angelfire.com/ca6/hawkins/darwin/darwin.html Enjoy! Jim Hawkins

Would anyone be able to lookup the following names in the 1850 Census? Roland M Smith b. 1796 who married Mary "Polly" M Lowry, and father of the following sons: William L Smith b. 1820 James M Smith b. 1822 Elisha J Smith b. 1825 Alexander W Smith b. 1824 Solomon H Smith b. 1829 All of the sons were born in KY. Alexander W married in 1858 in Pike Co. to Agnes Wright. I am trying to find out if Roland and the rest of his family came to Pike like son Alexander did from Warren Co. KY. Roland is in the 1820, 1830, and 1840 censuses of Warren Co. KY but not in the 1850. Would anyone be able to check for these names(except Alex and Agnes who moved by 1862 to Montgomery Co. and died there-have their obits)in a Pike Co. will index? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Anne
