    3. I was going through some marriage records recently and came across a marriage for James F. Cobb to Mahala Jane Price. This sounds real familiar but I can't find them in my database. Does anyone know the parents of either of these folks? Thanks Steve Young

    3. Dorothy, Just to let you know, your computer sent me the virus below. Having knowledge of this virus. I am sure you are unaware this is happening. This one sends itself to email addresses from unread mail in you mailbox. As this came from the MOPIKE list, I am send a copy to the list as well to hopefully avoid anyone else getting the virus. This is a somewhat new virus and any AV that has not been updated in the past few months would not detect it. It seems to be attacking those who use Outlook Express. You need to make sure your settings are such that attachments are not automatically downloaded, which I think the default is set to do so. If you need help finding a way to remove the virus, email me. Those who do not have an anti-virus can use this: http://housecall.antivirus.com/netscape.html Chuck McCardie Farley, Platte, MO Dorothy Burditt wrote: > > 'chuck' wrote: > ==== > - Not a Pike researcher but found this marraige under 3 different > - spellings of Holliday (Holiday, Holladay). 1. [MOPIKE-L] Kilby, Ella
    2. Bob Francis
    3. Fellow researchers, Does anyone have information about Ella Kilby who married John Thomas "Squire" Smith, October 1904? Both were in their elderly years when they mrried. I have the following small amount of information on her: An article in the Saturday Evening Post, June 2, 1951, was written by “Link” Kilby about his trip to England to study socialism, to report back to his friends in Vandalia, Mo., about his impressions of what he observed. This is the same Kilby family of Ella Kilby who was the second wife of grandfather John Thomas Smith. There was a “Link” Kilby at some of the Old Settlers reunions held in LeMaster’s Grove on the Middletown-Gazette Road, and it was “Grandma” Kilby who for a time was the oldest Old Settler at the reunions, who finally got too old to attend and so the reunion had to move, in part, over to her farm, for her to take part in it. “Grandma” Kilby was the first woman I ever saw smoking. She smoked a pipe and no one diapproved because she was very much respected and cherished by all her neighbors and family. She said herself that she was “tough as a hickory knot” and therefore not likely to be “hurt by a little smoke.” Bob Francis

    3. Are you aware you have sent me 2 emails containing viruses? I will notify rootsweb and your ISP and will wait to hear from your before I do further as you may be unaware of this. To all Pike researchers, The emails I recieved from fneher@crcwnet.com were infected with a new virus. Be sure you anti-virus program is updated. If you have not updated in the past few months, your AV will not detect this virus. The extensions were .scr and .pif, both commonly used to send viruses. Also .exe and .doc are used as well. If you have opened these files and did not get a hit from your AV, you may well be affected. If you need help, email me and I will give you some information to help. I take this very seriously and I have the knowledge to take care of the problem! 1. [MOPIKE-L] John Thomas Smith
    2. Bob Francis
    3. Fellow researchers, I am searching for information on the location of John Thomas Smith's farm near Gazette. Following is a description of the family from a genealogy that I have: "After Julia's (Trower) death, John Thomas Smith raised his five children with the help of his sisters and relatives, who lived nearby. Nancy Shawhan Smith Vanarsdale took the baby John Frances Smith for a while until he was old enough to be cared for by the girls at home. This family of children lived on the road between Gazette, Mo. and Vandalia, Mo. in a house which was then next door to the old Clithero place, not far up the road from the Chandler place, both places still known by those names even now in 1951. When his family were growing up up, many incidents of interest happened to them which have been told in 'Meet My Association' by Isobel Chandler Madsen, a manuscript in preparation to preserve the tales of interest and general knowledge about the years gone by. The house where they lived has long since been moved to another location." "He studied law and practiced it, along with farming, and running horses at the County Fairs, raising his own tobacco, and making most of his own liquor using malt that he made himself from his own barley shoots. He was a gregarious and vocal character, known as "Squire" and "Judge" in the county where he was widely acquainted. He sang well, and often led the singing at revivals and in the church. He was the Superintendent of the church at Estes, but would never join it because he did not want to pin his religious convictions to any creed that was not flexible. What the denomination of the church at Estes was, I have not learned, but I doubt that it made much difference to grandfather. He was a fun-loving man, and liked to hear himself talk, and he liked people. His funeral in Pike County was almost as big an affair in the county as was that of Adolph Busch in St. Louis, which he and a trainload of politicians attended, staying for three days and having the time of their lives." John Francis Smith was born in Pike County, Missouri, August 21, 1889. His father, John Thomas Smith, was a well-respected farmer and some-time lawyer, known locally as "Squire." John Thomas Smith owned a fine farm near the village of Gazette, Missouri, and there raised five children: Archie Pearl (July 30, 1877 - 1927), who married Maude Laird; Sallie Jackson (September 22, 1879 - ), who married Mason Branstetter; Margaret Melvina (November 28, 1881 - after 1938), who married Oscar William Chandler (November 23, 1876 - November 26, 1960); Edith Mae (November 6, 1886 - 1933), who married General F. Hamlett; John Francis (above). ----- Finally, is anyone on the list related to these people? I'd love to learn more about them. Thanks, Bob Francis

It looks above-board and has some great features other free genealogy sites lack. Check it out at: Bob, I ran across the name McDonald on the 1900 census. It is part of Ancestrys images and some is hard to make out. Here is what I think it says: Number of dwelling: 77 Jesse McDonald- Head of H./ W/M born May, 1879; age 21; married 4 years; born in MO; both parents born in MO; Occup. Farmer; can read/write/speak english; owns property/no mortgage; Farm (not house) Gertie - Wife W/F; born Nov, 1878; age 21; m'd 4 years, mother of 3 children; 2 living; born in MO; both parents b. MO; can read/write/sp. eng. Bessie - daughter w/f born Dec, 1897; age 3, single; b. MO Jesse - son w/m born May, 1900; age ? months; single; b. MO William - nephew w/m born Sept. 1887; age 12; single, b. MO; at school This is taken from Hartford Township. Supervisors Dist. 9, Enumeration Dist 90, Sheet 4. Dated June 8th and 9th, 1900 by John T. Smith, Enumerator. Next dwelling, 78, shows the John Hobbs family. Wife shows Sarah, 12 children, 10 living and listed from ages 1 to 23. Dwelling 79 shows James Vineyard. It lists James where the last name usually is so I don't know if it was an error or not. Wife is hard to make out. Rocna?? shows 5 children, 4 living. Lists 3, Ellen, Bessie, Wallis(?). His parents from KY and hers from NC and VA. Others on the page is Edmond Carter, John Gibbs, John Slick(?), Mike Lemolis(?) and their families. Hope this helps someone. Chuck McCardie -- The older I get, the better I was!
