Obituary - Sedalia Democrat, 16 March 1945 Rev. Joseph A. DeWitt Rev. Joseph A. DeWitt, 75 years old, well-known Baptist minister of the Beaman community, died at his home north of Beaman at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon. He had been in failing health for the past three years, but his condition did not become critical until a short time ago. Rev. DeWitt was born north of Beaman June 15, 1869, the son of the late Franklin and Ann Potter DeWitt. With the exception of a few months, he had lived his entire life in this community. He was married to Margaret Josephine Wilson, October 18, 1894, who survives. Mrs. DeWitt has been an invalid for the past thirteen months following a paralytic stroke. Early in his life Rev. DeWitt united with the Lamine Baptist Church and when he was a young man was called to the ministry. He devoted his entire time and efforts to this mission until his health failed. Well known and loved throughout all the community and county where he served, he untiring efforts to serve those who needed him stands as a monument to his memory. He is survived by his wife; five sons, Ollie A. DeWitt, Beaman; James DeWitt, Portsmouth, Va.; Roy DeWitt, Pleasant Green; Oran DeWitt, Omaha, Neb.; Elmer DeWitt of the home; five daughters, Mrs. Mae Price, Omaha, Neb.; Mrs. Henry Vollrath, Sedalia; Mrs. Lee Vollrath, Green Ridge; Mrs. Cevia Sims, Madison, Wis.; Mrs. Emmett Wood, Detroit, Mich. Thirty-two grandchildren also survive. One of the grandsons, Cecil Price, is serving overseas. Four great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held at the family home Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. The Rev. G. M. Baker of Sedalia will officiate. Interment will be in the Potter family cemetery north of the Lamine church. The body was taken from the Ewing funeral home to the family home this afternoon.
