    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: JOHNSON, CLAUGHTON Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FMB.2ACE/1417 Message Board Post: Trying to find any connection to a James M. JOHNSON b ~1825 in Virginia (son of Claiborne B. JOHNSON and Nancy THOMAS). James married Harriet P. CLAUGHTON on Sept 22 1852 in Franklin County, VA. James died after July 1891 (the last record of him in Pettis County, MO). Harriet died November 11, 1898 in Sedalia, Pettis County, Missouri. In the 1860 Missouri census, Harriet's brother, Richard, is also living in their household. No further information can be found on him either. James is last enumerated in the Sedalia City Directory in 1890. There was no listing for him in 1891 and 1892, and the next available directory is 1895 where Harriet is listed as Mrs. J.M. Johnson. This leads us to believe that James died between 1890-1895. James' occupation is listed as "teamster" on the 1870 Pettis County, Missouri census. He is listed in the Sedalia City Directories as follows: - 1873-74: J. M., trader, house Missouri between 2d and 3d - 1879-80: farmer, res 620 w 2d - 1883-84: teamster, res ne cor 2d and Harrison ave - 1884-85: trader r 620 w 2d - 1886-87: Jas N, fr Va, tmstr, res 620 W Second street - 1889-90: res 615 w 2nd He was not listed for 1891 and 1892 and the next available directory was 1895 where his wife is listed as a widow. There was also an 1886 Census for Sedalia, Missouri (page 11) where James was listed as follows: 4 males, 2 females, 1 under age 10, 2 aged 10-20, 3 aged 20+, he was a trader and resided at 620 W 2nd. When comparing this data to what is known about James M. the under age 10 person is unidentified. In January 1873, James M. and Harriet P. Johnson had their land located in Elk Fork Township (R23 T45, NE Quarter of the SE Quarter of S15) foreclosed and sold at auction in payment of promissory note to George M. Pemberton. The Pettis County, Missouri Circuit Records had an index listing for James M. Johnson as plaintiff versus R. W. Barnett et al. The judgment was listed in Book C, dated October 9, 1885. It is also referred to in Book Q, page 371, 405 and 434. Harriet lived with her son, Claude, at the time of her death on the third floor of the Dr. Wood building located on the southwest corner of Second and Ohio streets in Sedalia, Missouri. Harriet's funeral service took place at the First M.E. Church, South. The following was written about the M.(ethodist) E.(piscopal) Church South in the 1879-80 City Directory: "The church was located on Third street, between Lamine Street and Washington Avenue. Rev. E. G. Frazier, Pastor. Seats free." Harriet's gravesite is in Crown Hill Cemetery (Block 17, Lot 26) in Sedalia, Pettis County, Missouri. It was owned by Elizabeth Stahl, who was her son's (Adolphus P.) mother-in-law. The sexton's records indicate that Elizabeth Stahl purchased a lot (contains 6 graves), however, only Harriett and an Infant child of Adolphus are buried there. It is unknown if the other graves are occupied. I have reviewed the entire Franklin County, VA 1850 census looking for Harriett Claughton as a daughter, along with her brother, Richard. There were NO Claughton's under any spelling in the entire county census. Harriet is listed in the Sedalia City Directories as follows: - 1895: Mrs. J. M., wid, res 307 w 5th - 1897: Mrs. J. W., wid, res 307 w 5th - 1898-99: (wid JM), r 204 s Ohio Children of JAMES JOHNSON and HARRIET CLAUGHTON are: i. EDWARD PRINTZ JOHNSON, b. April 05, 1857, ,, Missouri; d. April 04, 1862, , Pettis County, Missouri. Edward is buried in Old Hickory Point Cemetery, Pettis County, MO. However, the cemetery inscription indicates a date of death of April 4, 1862 at age 1 year, 11 months, 29 days which does not correlate with other known facts related in the 1860 and 1870 censuses. Therefore, I believe that the Edward indicated in the cemetery book is the same child as Edward listed on the 1860 census and that the tombstone age of 1 year was misread and should have been a 4. The cemetery is located 2 1/2 miles north of Green Ridge and 3 miles west. Entrance is through a field for about 1/4 mile. ii. ADOLPHUS PRICE JOHNSON, b. September 10, 1859, ,, Missouri; d. October 21, 1928, Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri; m. MARGARET BELLE STAHL, Abt. 1885; b. October 11, 1867, , Marion County, Ohio; d. November 25, 1947, Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. Adolph was 50 years old per the Kansas 1910 census and 56 years old per the Missouri 1920 census. Wife and children are consistent in census records. The 1860 and 1870 censuses where he is enumerated with his parents indicate that his birthplace is Missouri, while his death certificate states Virginia (his parents original place of origin). Adolph's death was on the front page of The Kansas City Star, Monday, October 22, 1928: CAR DEATH TOLL TO 60 "...Adolphe Johnson, 65 years old, 1508 Holmes Street...Johnson was struck at Fifteenth and Campbell streets when he stepped from the curb and started across the street to a restaurant, through heavy traffic. He was struck by a car driven by Finis McLain, 45 years old, 502 Prospect avenue, a barber. McLain said the rain and bright lights confused him and he did not see Johnson until his car had struck him. Johnson died in the receiving ward at General Hospital." He is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri in Block 13, Grave 3783. His grave is unmarked. In the 1883-84 Sedalia, Missouri City Directory, Adolphus is listed as clerking for Norton & Norton. This company was owned by G. B. Norton and L. S. Norton and was a wholesale and retail grocer. They were located at 212 Ohio Street. This is apparently where Adolphus learned his trade, as he was a grocer for most of his life. The following represents all of the entries for Adolphus in the Sedalia City Directories: - 1879-80: clk, res ns 2d w of Moniteau - 1883-84: clk, Norton & Norton, res ne cor 2d and Harr ave (living with his parents) - 1884-85: A. This notice also states that he had returned to Texas a few days prior to his mother's death in 1898. Belle's birth is recorded in the FREE family bible as: Margaret Belle Free, October 11, 1867. This has been confirmed by the 1869/1870 divorce papers between Jacob FREE and Elizabeth UNCAPHER. This bible was in the possession of a friend of Marion County, OH researcher, Maxine Marshall, in 1998. Belle is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri in Block 13, grave 3063. Her grave is unmarked. Belle's surname at the time of her birth was FREE. Her mother was married to Jacob FREE at the time of her birth, but Samuel STAHL was her father. A divorce was filed 2 years later and Belle lived with her mother and biological father in Pettis County, MO. Elizabeth's children by Jacob FREE remained with Jacob in Marion County, OH. Kansas City, Missouri City Directories: - 1928: Neither Belle or Adolph are listed in City Directory. The address mentioned in Adolph's obituary 1224 Troost is the site of Williams Apartments. They were not listed at tenants at the time of printing the city directory. - 1933: Margt (wid Adolph) h1112 E 14th, her son, Robert E. is listed at same address - 1934: Margt (wid Adolph T) h1112 E 14th, her son, Robert E. is listed at same address Belle lived at Little Sisters of the Poor the last 3 years of her life. According to their records, Belle was born in Ohio on October 17, 1863. She was the widow of Adolph Johnson. Her mother was Margaret Unkefer. Her father was Samuel Stahl. She entered the home on July 10, 1943 and brought with her a suitcase with: 5 dresses, 9 pair of stockings, 3 sets of underwear, coat, 2 nightgowns, 3 sweaters, and 2 pair of shoes. Belle was the informant on her mother's death certificate. This is the first record reflecting Belle's mother as "Elizabeth" versus Margaret. Also, Belle was again living in Sedalia, Missouri at the time (1924). iii. STONEWALL JOHNSON, b. Abt. 1862, ,, Missouri; d. April 26, 1883, , Pettis County, Missouri. Stonewall is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Sedalia, Pettis County, Missouri. The cemetery is located between Saline and Washington Street at 830 North Engineer. He is listed in the cemetery transcription records as Stoneman Johnson. Stonewall's death notice in the newspaper claims that he died of typhoid fever. His death record on file at the Pettis County, Missouri Municipal Building states he died from spinal meningitis. iv. CORALEE JOHNSON, b. August 16, 1864, ,, Missouri; d. June 08, 1869, , Pettis County, Missouri. Coralee is buried in Old Hickory Point Cemetery, Pettis County, MO. The cemetery is located 2 1/2 miles north of Green Ridge and 3 miles west. I had wondered if my John C. Fowler might be son or nephew of your Joseph Sawyer Fowler? John C. Fowler was born @1818 KY married Olivia Heath (b. @1821-1824 KY or IN pob & age varies on Census records) in Jan. 1843 Gasconade Co. MO. They had children: Ellen Fowler b. @1843 MO D. William Fowler b. @1845 MO (my gr. grandpa) Isabella Fowler b. @1850 MO Mary "Molly" Ann Fowler b. @1855 TX Olivia Fowler b. @1864 (?) TX John C. Fowler moved a lot. 1850 Saline Co. Distr. 90, MO 1860 Denton Co., Stewart Creek, TX 1870 Newton Co., Granby Twp., MO 1880 Searcy Co., Bear Creek, AR He died in AR Dec. 1877 My D. William Fowler married Cassandra Minerva Jane Enterprise Goodman in 1878 in Van Buren Co. AR. I suspect it was his 2nd marriage as he was pretty long in the tooth in 1878 and so many women died in childbirth back then. Will and Cass had 1 son, John Henry Fowler b. Jan. 1880 Searcy Co. AR then D. Will Fowler died prior to 1884 because Cass married again 1884. John Henry Fowler married twice, my Grandma was his 2nd wife and he was her 2nd husband as she was a widow with 2 small sons. She was Elizabeth "Liza" Jane Raulston (1) Jones and they married as soon as his divorce was final, he said his first wife, Mary M. Dean had desserted him a few years prior and he did not know where she was (per divorce papers). John Henry & Liza Fowler had 8 children, one was my Father, Guy Leslie "Les" Fowler b. 1914 AR, m. Cynthia Lorene "Lo" Aylor b. 1916 TX and they produced me and 3 more, only 2 of us survived to adulthood. I suspect John C. Fowler's brother was Jackson H. Peter Fowler, b. 1815 KY, who was in Osage Co. MO 1860 Census. I never located him on the 1850 Census. He was a boatman. He was baptised Catholic in adulthood in the St. Josephs Church where I suspect he picked up the middle name Peter. I think he may have become Catholic in order to marry Josephine Goellner which he did not too long after being baptised. I do not know who his first wife was or when or where he married the first time. He is buried in Osage Co., MO at St. Josephs. I would be happy to mail you my information if you send me your snail mail address to my email address [email protected] It would take too long to type it all and I cannot scan. I had THOUGHT maybe Joseph Sawyer Fowler b. 1791 KY was son of Jerimiah Fowler b. @1745 and was in Madison Co. KY but I was guessing because that Joseph had Nieces who married and lived in Boone Co. MO. Boone Co. MO appeared to be where Joseph Fowler was when he bought the land in Pettis Co. MO. But I am doing this from memory and I may be wrong, which would not be the first time. I have not looked at that reasearch in a long while. I have looked for a long time to locate whether the Robert Fowler in Pettis was related to Joseph Fowler in Pettis but I cannot locate where EITHER is related to my John C. Fowler but there was a Robert Fowler who signed some land in Osage Co. MO over to John C. Fowler and Jackson H. Fowler in 1843. Boone Co. MO is between Pettis & Osage Co. MO. Oct. 1, 1840 Gasconade Co. MO Robert Fowler of Montogomery Co. Mo bought 40 acres (doc. 9509, Serial MO0710_210). Gasconade Co. Mo is right next to Osage Co. MO. Nov. 10, 1841 PETTIS Co. MO Joseph Fowler of BOON Co. MO purchased 10 acres #17395 Ser. MO2820_210. I just wondered if the many Fowler's in the area were from Madison Co. KY where there were so many Fowlers settled. I got much of my Madison Co. KY info from the Roots Web World Connect of Barry Shanley & some others. I was looking for my own John C. Fowler, of course, and I never located him. I had just tried to fit it all together in my mind but it is hard to do with so MANY different men with the same old names. I would be happy to share what I have located with you. Charlene

I haven't been able to find a thing other than the fact they may have had another son Landon Fowler who was born abt 1803 Kentucky and married Sarah Osten in Boone Co Missouri 10 Jan 1832. Landon lived in Cass Co. Missouri up until 1860 for sure, but then I can't find him after that, but some of his kids still lived there through 1880's I think it was. I just wonder if this John C and Jackson might be brothers of Joseph Sawyer Fowler. Will do some searching and see what I find. You might want to tell me what else you know about the others, that might help. What family of Fowler's do you descend from? Carolyn Whitaker

    1. [MOPETTIS] Henry D Hill (out of Pettis Co history book)
    2. I am searching for any information on Henry D Hill. Does anyone have anything on this man... Henry D Hill was born 1824 in Fairfax Co Va. His father Lawrence Hill and his mother Jane..nee Perry... were both natives of Va. Henry D first engaged in business in company with his father in the flouring business. Afterwards was in business in Troy and Albany NY. In 1857 he came to Georgetown, Pettis Co. Mo and engaged in business until 1863. Since that time he has been engaged in book keeping. At one time he owned valuable property in Sedalia. He was married in 1841 to Louise F Johnson by whom he had one child now deceased. His wife died in Brooklyn NY in 1849. He was married in 1851 to Mary M Bacon. She died Oct 1 1867. End of article. The book also said he was a Sunday School teacher in Georgetown Pettis Co. (North of Sedalia). I am trying to prove this is the Henry Hill that married my Sarah (Sallie) Drake in 1884. He would by my ggpa. All of my family Bible info matches the article except the family info says his father Lawrence was a New York banker.... on the 1880 Pettis Co census there is a Henry Hill born about 1851..he says his father born NY and mother Ohio. ..so this is my confused mess...Anyone have any suggestions or help????
