Hollenbeck who was the son of Alphonzo. My aunt and uncle still live in Pettis County, MO. Have you checked out the family tree section at Ancestry-there is a David Stone who has this line of Hollenbecks with notes and lists the books that he took the notes from-You may already know this, but just thought that I would pass along the information. Maybe you could contact him and he might have more information for you. Have a Good Day Sher Colyne Hazelwood

Alphonzo was born April 3, 1826. Yes, I would enjoy the pictures. Most all of our Mo. Hollenbeck pictures were lost in a fire. We have a large size photograph of the J.G. Bell Home and family, which I have also seen posted on an internet site. It appears that that home still exists? I was to the Hollenbeck Home as a child before developing an interest in geneology. We did not know about the cemetery at that time. -Rick

Born in Hudson, Ohio. d. June 26,1873 age 46 which would be 1827. It's a beautiful plot. It should be as the Hollenbecks and Bells owned a huge part of LA. Susan and James are buried nearby as well as there children. Do you want pictures or can I look anything up for you ?

They later bought a claim together in December along with "Thompson" and "Marx" (or) "Mix". There was an Oviatt among the early settlers in Summit Co. Ohio that the Hollenbecks knew. Alphonso left from there. I suspect that Chester Wells was from there too - Hudson, Ohio or Franklin Mills, Ohio. - Rick

I believe that Amanda remained behind in Mo. There was a photo in one of these letters leading me to believe that it is a photo of Alphonzo. His diary reports his passage through Nicaragua, his encounter with his brother Ed (J.E.) there and his activities while mining during the Ca. gold rush. Have you seen these grave sites at Evergreen Cemetery? I'm afraid that I don't have anthing more on Chester Wells. I have learned little of the Pecatonica period.

I had seen the name Wells as her first husband. The date you provide for his enlistment helps braket the time pertiod that Alphonzo made the notation of the men. I suspect that the war debilitated Chester's health. I do not have any hard proof of Alphonzo's place of death or burial. Notes in a family copy of the Hollenbeck Home indicate "d.6/26/1873 Calif". History of Pettis Co. indcates he died in S. America. (Could it be Nicaragua?). According to records, J.E. went to LA in 1874 to visit and in 1876 to buy land; meaning he hadn't moved there yet. Could JE have had him re-buried in LA? Evergreen Cemetery doesn't know who the "A.H." Hollenbeck is that is buried along side of JE and Elizabeth. My bet is Alphonzo - we don't know his middle name. There is also an Otto Wolf buried in the Hollenbeck plot. You live in or near LA? Anxious to learn more. - Rick

I think Amanda's mother's name was Rowena. Amanda was illegitimate, and Rowena moved with she and Nathaniel Henderson to Pettis County. I don't know much else about the family. They did come from West VA. though, so there very well could be a connection. A cousin of mine did find where Amanda had been claimed in the census by either her brother or uncle. I don't fully remember now, but it was one or the other. It has been a while since I have done much research on the family, so I'm a little rusty. Drop me an email if you think you might have a connection. Charles Wise [email protected]

Rival was an ancestor. Other Hollenbeck descendants and I are not sure of Rival's ancestors, save that he was in Summit Co., Ohio and Pecatonica, Ill, (where my Hollenbecks came from) signed papers placing him in the "family loop" in Pettis County after the Civil War. Do you know any more about him? re: Chester Wells, I am sure that the proposed age that I showed for him is incorrect. I have since proven it off by a couple of years (I wasn't sure when Alphonzo's list was written). I can get closer if you wish. Rick
