I'm sure there was a newspaper published in the county prior to that, but I don't think any copies are known to exist. The Pemiscot County Historical Society (housed in the Caruthersville Library) has microfilm copies of available newspapers and there are also microfilm copies at the Missouri State Historical Society Library Collection. You might check some of the newspapers from towns in neighboring counties (New Madrid Record, for instance, has some issues beginning in 1881). .
