Does anyone know if any "Rosenwald" black schools were ever built in southeast Missouri? Between 1913 and 1932, Julius Rosenwald was instrumental in having 5,300 schools constructed in "the South." Sometimes, but not always, the name Rosenwald became part of the school's nomenclature. Many were built in the state of Texas, and I have heard that there was one in Madisonville, Kentucky. Rosenwald later served as president of Sears, Roebuck and Co. He became a wealthy man. To be eligible for a Rosenwald school, a community had to donate 2 acres of land plus labor to build the school (thus, white residents plus African-Americans contributed to the effort). I understand that the Rosenwald fund made up about a third of the total outlay. These schools were subsequently deeded to the local school district. Any information on these schools would be appreciated. Mary Sue Anton, New Madrid native
