    1. Re: [MOPEMISC] Dave Willoughby, Wardell Sheriff - 1930's
    2. Dave Willoughby was my great-uncle. I did not know that he was married to Bessie. Do you have any information concerning when and where they were married? Did they have any children? Uncle Dave died July 31, 1969. His full name was David Gordon Willoughby. His brother, Ardell Hobson Willoughby was married to my grandmother. Here is a copy of his obituary: Obituary for David Willoughby: Funeral services for Dave Willoughby of Wardell, Missouri were conducted Friday at 3 p.m. at the Wardell Methodist Church. Rev. Floyd Brower and Rev. Elvin Hensley officiated. Burial was in the Wardell Memorial Cemetery with the Jimmy Osburn Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mr. Willoughby was born January 13, 1905 in Oran, Missouri. He died Wednesday at his home at the age of 64. Mr. Willoughby had been City Police Marshall of Wardell for many years and was serving in this position at the time of his death. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lois Willoughby of Wardell; two sons, William Willoughby of Charleston, S.C. and Arthur Willoughby of Hartford, Michigan; a brother, John Willoughby of Wardell; two sisters, Mrs. H.C. Cook of Kennett and Mrs. Frank Barker of Harrison, Ark., and seven grandchildren. Pallbearers were Henry Acom, John B. Mathis, Ralph Terrell, Gene Young, Calis Arbuckle and Jesse Byrd. I look forward to hearing from you. 1. Re: [MOPemiscot] Re: MOUND CEMETERY
    2. Blossom Merryman
    3. Re a 'mound cemetery': I believe the cemetery you seek was across the Stubtown/Cottonwood Road, about 200-300 yds west, out in front of the Anderson mound, a large prehistoric Mississippian Temple mound (according to many sources, the largest mound in MO, 400' long X 250' wide and 35' high). My great grand parents and their ancestors, lived there in a large rambling house, until the last one passed on in the 1930's and the house was eventually torn down. There were never any burials here in historic times, or a cemetery on the top of this mound- my family still owns it- as there was and still are on the large temple mound close to New Madrid). The /historic/ mound community cemetery was behind the old mound school, where my grandmother, who lived in the house on top of the Anderson mound, went to school in the early 1900's. I'm told by a relative that the school became a private home and that the once large cemetery near it, is now very much compromised by farming operations. I understand a few stones remain near the home of a Mrs. Moody. I do not know if this cemetery was ever inventoried. Re 'bodies removed and taken to Columbia': Just south of the Anderson mound was a smaller much plowed down /prehistoric /burial mound of the same time period. In 1954-5 my family allowed an excavation of this smaller mound (Murphy site), by the University of Missouri Dept. of Anthropology and some skeletal material was noted, though by far, ritual cremations outnumber extended burials (only about 5 as I recall). An account of prehistoric cultures and archaeological investigation in SE Missouri including the Murphy site, can be read in the book, '/Cat Monsters and Head Pots/' (which alludes to the artistic effigy forms of the pottery); /the Archeology of Missouri's Pemiscot Bayou/', by Dr. Michael J. O'Brien, U of Mo. Press, 1994, which should be in the public library in Caruthersville. (several copies have been stolen and replaced over the years). I bought copies last year through amazon.com. If you log on to the U. or Mo web site there will be examples of the beautiful pottery found in the area. The University would not have records of /historic /burials from this area, as that was not the focus of their investigations, only the /prehistoric/ excavations and associated artifact collections. Hope you can find some record of your family and that this has helped clear up the cemetery confusion. B. Murphy Merryman Portageville native now in Tennessee [email protected] wrote: >This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > >Classification: Query > >Message Board URL: > >http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EMB.2ACE/894.1.2.1 > >Message Board Post: > >I have an obituary for Mrs. Allie Mayo, wife of Murry, of the Mound community, near Caruthersville, who died Wednesday, June 28, 1944. The Mound community was located a few miles south of Stubtown (between there and Cottonwood Point). There was an Indian Mound cemetery. It is all grown up and inaccessible. According to the Pemiscot County Historical society records: "Approximately 116 bodies were found and removed to Columbia, Mo. The females were about 6' 6" tall and the males 7' tall." I do not know if anyone in Columbia would have these records. > > >The death certificate for Troy Virginia Mayo, who died March 15, 1923 shows the cemetery as Mounds Cemetery, Caruthersville, Mo. > > > >============================== >New!
