    1. [MOPEMISC] Rural School Teacher Larry Gillen, 1910s, Pemiscot Co., Missouri
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: KMGillen Surnames: Beeching, Benward, Bruce, Thomas, Williams Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.pemiscot/1732/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Seeking photographs of William Lawrence "Larry" Gillen Larry was born in either Elizabethtown, or Louisville, Kentucky, in 1885. His parents were John Patrick Gillen and Ellanora Thomas. The family lived in Louisville, where both of Larry's parents died before he reached the age of 7. He was raised by Noah Luke Williams and Lydia Ann (Thomas) Williams in St. John, Hardin Co., Kentucky. Lydia Ann Thomas-Williams was Larry's Grandaunt. Larry was a Rural School Teacher in Hardin Co., Kentucky from 1903 to 1910. In 1910, Larry moved to Missouri. He then taught at Cooter School, Tyler, Pemiscot Co., Missouri about 1910-1912. He is then listed as teacher for the Congo School District #68, in Shannon Co., Missouri for the academic year 1912-1913. Larry was said to be artistic and was an accomplished Violin Player. In later years he was a "Sign Painter" who reportedly made lots of commercial signs. Larry married Zera Bertha Beeching in Tyler, Missouri, in 1912. Performing the ceremony was John T. Bruce, Pastor of Tyler Church. Zera was the daughter of Andrew Melvin Beeching and Lillie Mae Benward. In 1913, Larry and his wife returned to Kentucky--they eventually separated. It appears that Larry stayed in Hardin County until at least 1952. He lived in Louisville from 1952-1958. He moved to the Masonic Home in Shelbyville, Shelby Co., Kentucky, where he died a year later in 1959. ____________________________________________________________ I am seeking ANY photographs of Larry Gillen, no matter how small or poor quality. There seems a high likelihood that there is some School Class Picture from one of Larry's students. His students would probably be the grandparents or great grandparents of people living in 2007. There is also a possibility someone has a photograph of him with a Violin. Also, perhaps a painting exists that he signed, when he was a Sign Painter. If you have any information or ANY photographs, I would be very grateful to hear from you. Thank you! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
