    1. [MOPEMISC] George Billins aka John Smith
    2. Hello, I am new to the list. I have a mystery (Dont we all?) My gr-uncle George Billings was born Jan 1892 in Arkansas, he was married twice, once to Mrytle Witt, divorced her married Aunt Cleveland Pierson, Aunt Cleveland already had Children by her first husband. George and Clevie had Alfred and Opal. Opal died at 1 year old. George was not an upstanding citizen,He married Clevie without being divorced from Mrytle. Clevie found out and made him get a divorce and then she remarried him. When Alfred was about 4 years old aunt Clevie left George. Alfred never saw his dad again for appox 20 years and then he just shows up one day. They kept in contact with each other there after. After Clevie divorced George he moved on to the Jackson Co Tn area, connected with another lady and they had approx nine children. He shows up one Sunday morning in the 1950's at my mothers house wanting her and my aunt (the only two siblings of his sister) to go to court and try and get the land that my grandfather sold after my grandmother died in 1918. Now here is my mystery and the help I need. When George left Clevie, he changed his name to John Smith. He died and was at a funeral home in Steele Mo. Alfred went to the funeral and told the funeral director that he had the wrong name on him. and the funeral director did change it back to George Billings and that is how he was buried. His Smith Children were suppose to be living around Helena Ark,one of the sons was suppose to be a policeman or police chief. How do I find where and when George died and where is he buried. He had to have died between the 1950's and 1982 as this was when Alfred told me about his dad. George had a step daughter that lived in Steele, Did he go back there because of her?? She was Ines Frances Bowen Cothern. Thank you for any suggestions. Wilma **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps! Leonidas married Martha on Nov 11, 1875 in Greenwood, Sebastian Co., Arkansas. You are correct, Leonidas was born in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana on Jun 26, 1853. He was the 3rd son of William Hunter Cross and Lucy W. Mays. His other siblings moved to Sebastian Co. before the 1880 census. The 1870 Census has him in Louisiana and the 1900 census list him in Arkansas. I have not been able to locate him on the 1880 census of either state. Leonidas is my great-granduncle. I have an excellent resource book on the descendants of William Hunter Cross and Lucy W. Mays. it contains over 360 Family Group Record sheets for the Cross family. If you need any information let me know. Another excellent source of information is the Sebastian Co. Gen web site. The most helpful is the link to the Gilliam cemetery. There are over 70 of my Cross and Wilson relatives buried in the cemetery. Most have photos of the grave stones. One being a double stone for L.S. and Mattie. I note from your post that you live in Norman. I grew up in Tecumseh and now live in Beaumont, California. Go Sooners!!! James A. I will get confirmation on my email address and email you. I have an email address at work, but I won't be going back until tomorrow. I will email the work address also. When I answered your question as to "was I a child of the 1st wife or the 2nd wife" and my answer was that "Daddy only had children by his first wife, my mother", maybe I shouldn't have worded it like that. I apologize for any confusion. My dad was married for 32 years (I think) to my mom, Deloris. Together they had 4 children, all girls. Wendy, Cyndi, Jenny and Beth, in that order. I am the second oldest, 52 years old this past November. I have 2 sons, Mickey (31) and Matt (24) and two identical twin grandsons by my oldest son Mickey (they are 6 years old), my Dad would have loved to have seen them. Daddy divorced my Mom to be with Lola Mae Hurley Love late in life and pretty much removed himself from our lives for a time. However, I and my sisters never gave up on him. From time to time we would call, drop by, cook for him, etc. Dad and Lola eventually married and moved to Tharp Town in Franklin County Alabama. Lola and her family played musical instruments and ! sang together. Daddy felt at home and happy. I personally believed that he was truly happy with Lola. My feelings about the reasons why will go unsaid here. But when we connect via email I will go into greater depth. My mother has never remarried. She made several trips to Illinois to Courthouses, libraries, etc. She is the one that did the research on Daddy's family. She went with him to the Children's Home. She went with him to his mother's grave. I was young at the time and I don't remember who all went, but I know that Margaret and Joanne went because my Mom has a picture of all of them arranging flowers on Edna's grave. The tombstone says Edna Sims Irvin, as though Irvin was her last name. Very confusing. My mom has all the information, because when my Dad died, Lola gave us back the information and some photos. Please give your Mom my best, and please tell your Mom to let your Grandmother know (if Elizabeth is having a good day) that my Dad loved her very much, and that one of Bobby's daughter's has reached out to tell her so. He was married to my mom for 32 years. Mom pretty much worked all the time when we were growing up. Even though Dad had a good job at Reynolds Metals, unfortunately he also had a boss named alcohol that pretty much took over his life and as a result, our lives. When Daddy wasn't drinking he was the best father in the world. He was a wonderful man that would give a total stranger the shirt off his back. I remember when I was small, I went with him to the store and when we went to check out, there was an elderly woman in front of us and she didn't have enough money to buy all her groceries. The woman was trying to sort through things to figure out what to put back, but Daddy paid for her groceries for her. He was like that. Generous and kind to a fault when he was sober. When he wasn't sober, well that was a different story. I learned early on to divide him into good daddy and bad daddy. That was the only way my little min! d could make sense of it. We wouldn't have enough money to buy our own food, and he would either give it away or it would just disappear. Please don't get me wrong. I loved my Dad very much and miss him badly. I just always sensed that there was a very deep sadness and resentment in him that I never understood. Maybe one day I will. I have a feeling that a lot of Daddy's sadness came from his childhood. He never spoke about his family with me nor any of my sisters, it was just understood you didn't ask him about it. Daddy loved your Grandmother very much and named my youngest sister after her and him. Her name is Elizabeth Jo. I think Elizabeth (your Grandmother) was the person that gave Daddy hope and love. I didn't know Ray very well. We used to go to his house when we were little. He was married to Margaret Sims. I remember they weren't very friendly people, but to a small child that could have been wrong. Ray used to give my sister and I fifty cent pieces that he called "big Ohs". Margaret and Joanne visited us several times when I was growing up. Jean and Wanda also visited us a few times, but when you are little and you don't get to see folks very often you tend to not hang around much, although there are photos of me as a toddler with all of them on various visits. My oldest sister, Belinda (we call her Wendy) looks very much like the photo I have of Edna Irvin Sims. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. So your Grandmother is my Aunt, your Mother is my cousin, and you are my second cousin. I never met Elizabeth, unless it was when I was so small I don't remember. My Dad loved your Grandmother so very much. I'm not sure of the facts, but I know your Grandmother was somewhat older than my Father and she would come back to the children's home to visit her little brother (my Dad) and her little sisters. My Dad said Elizabeth walked to the home and brought them a bicycle one time. Daddy thought of Elizabeth as a substitute mother and loved her as much as a son loves a mother. I was told that Sims is not a birthname. I was told that Sims was the name of the missionary that came to the reservation on which Charlie Sims' father lived and that when Charlie's dad reverted to Christianity, he took the name Sims as his Christian name. I believe one of Dad's sisters (I think the one that lives/lived in Guam) has the entire geneolog! y of the family and has proven that we are descendants of the Iroquois, with my great-grandfather and your great-great-great grandfather, being a full blooded Iroquois Nation Native American. My father looked very much like his father and I look very much like my father. I don't know that all of this information is true, and I don't know that it is not true, but I do know that the photo I have of Charlie shows a very strong resemblance to a proud Native American. Have you heard this? I don't know why this family is so very secretive about their history. I am proud of all of them for surviving and becoming our ancestors. I hope we both find some resolution and peace regarding this branch of our family. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The first time was to a woman (name unknown to me) with whom he had 2 or more children. The second time he married Edna Irvin. They had many children together. My father, Bobby Joe Sims, was one of those children. I know Margaret Sims was the youngest, Joanne Sims Wilder, Mary Elizabeth Sims, Marlene or Marlena, Mary Ruth, Benny, Wanda Jean, and several others. I know that Edna Irvin Sims died while many of the children were still young. As a result, the children younger than 16 went to live at the Carmi Children's Home (my father was one of those that went to the children's home) and although he never spoke to me about the living conditions there, he did talk to my mother about it and from what she has relayed to me, it wasn't a good life. My father (Bobby Joe) was very small at the time of his mother's death. I don't understand the reasons why the children didn't remain with their father, C! harles Christopher Sims. My father died without ever discussing this with my or my sisters. I have a photo of his mother (my grandmother) with the children, and I also have a photo of Charles Christopher Sims (my grandfather). My mother has most of the photos and we are working on a family history album for future generations.
